Toothless woke up slowly, his eyes blinked furiously, and his head was spinning roughly. As he looked at his surroundings, he noticed he was indeed in his apartment. At the time, his head was resting on a table, his arms were supporting it. Just by side of his head, placed was the laptop, opened widely. It probably shut down after hours of lack of motion. His turtleneck remained, boots on his feet, and fully clothed, he fall asleep while working. No shit Sherlock. He rushed his palm through this face, in the way to stay awake. Glancing at his phone, it remained black-screened, off. There wasn't any alarm or any notifications. What the hell woke him up then?
Immediately, the doorbell, the same as the knocking sound, surrounded the whole apartment. He murmured to himself, cursing underneath his nose as he got up. From his tiredness, his gait was unconscious, because of which he tripped himself almost. Eyes half-opened focused on the door, who the fuck would come here at such an hour? Behind his back, the morning alarm on his phone went wild. He cursed, went back for it, turning it off, then this time his doorbell went feral. The way of the situation caused his veins to pop already, his eyes weren't visible underneath his brows, gritted his teeth. Finally getting to the door, before opening it, his sight remained on a baseball bat, which stood by the door just in case. He sighed. Let them speak first.
Opening them, the red-haired head, made its way toward him. James. "Toby! There you are! It's good to see-" He closed his doors just over another one's nose. He should take the bat. His steps led him towards the center of his living room, smiling mockingly over James shouting, as another one pretty unattractively hit his nose painfully. The door went wide open. He should buy that autonomic lock. "Tobias! You mother fucker! You almost broke my nose!" He shouted as he held onto his nose, stocking it.
"Then, don't wake me up next time." His smile faded from his face, as he turned to another one by face, crossing his arms in the meantime. "What do you need this time?"
"Why weren't you yesterday at training?"
"I was busy."
"Working? Don't make me that face, I'm sure you didn't. What happened?"
"There are things I have to take care of on my own."
"We might help."
"Hookfang seriously-" Then he stopped, eyes popped out as he stared at James, and his heart pounded. "We?"
Through the door, burst inside two teenage twins, both of them held plastic chairs which they started placing around his living room, creating circles alike. Sons of a-. One of them, forced him into a sitting position, in the chair just behind his back. Or at last tired so, because he stood straight, with Belch forcefully pushing onto his shoulders, by which he didn't even flinch. Seeing his tries, he sighed pity alike and mercifully made his way towards the chair as told. Just then, both sat just in front of him. He couldn't help but snarl by glancing at them. Barf wore square glasses, and Belch held onto papers with a pen in one of her hands. Both were wearing suits, as well as sat rather straight and officially alike. What the hell?
"Welcome to our every-week meetings. Don't mind my friend over here-" He pointed over his brother, which without raising his head, waved them with his palm. "He would likely just write our words, analyzing your state. Don't worry you're safe here." As he straighten, even more, he looked around. "Anyway, let's start. I'm Barf, and I'm about to be eighteen, I have slight problems with confidence, but proudly fight against it." His sight focused on Tobias, showing likely to him, and dictating to him.
He leans out towards him, his arm working as support balance. Mouth wide opened, same as eyes. After a mere moment of dead silence, his eyes closed as he massaged his forehead. "Intervention. Really?" His head turned in the direction of his said best friend. "Are you into it as well?" As an answer, James sat on a chair, a smirk on his face. "Obviously. Why the fuck I'm even asking."
"Mister Night." Barf continued, his tone was an official one. He couldn't help but glance at his with pure annoyance painted on his face. "We noticed your sudden disappearance, unknown tiredness and discomfort stream at us, as well as the feeling of worry."
"You just came here-" Tobias pointed straight towards twins. "-to laugh at me. Word worry isn't even close."
"Maybe~, yet we aren't by friend mister Night. Formalities, please. For you, it's Mister or sir."
His face screamed with madness, his palms already got into fists, and his face brightly shine with pure red. At the moment, when he was close to attack said mister, was interrupted by new outcomes. Known him blond girl Sarah, with a shorter, curly ginger-haired, chubby girl by her side, stood now by doors. Both girls didn't hide their surprise. "What the actual fuck guys?! We were just behind your backs!"
"Miss Sarah, you're interrupting us! How can I help him, when I am nonstop stopped!"
"When I asked for your help I didn't mean... This!"
Toothless didn't even move, too confused by the whole situation. His expression was changing from surprised, to annoyed towards madness. His sight catches poor Meatlug, still hiding behind her best friend, slightly waving him. "Guys!" He shouted as the argument continued. Standing up, he got all of their attention. "I don't care, what stupid ideas are in those minds of yours, but it's my house. You can't just go in here, and feel such pleased!"
"I will come back to you in a minute! Now stay shut!" Sarah glanced at him, with those scary eyes of hers. Despite it, I didn't make him much impressed.
He rolled his eyes, as well as snarled. "It's not funny! I have no humor for that!"
Belch, which remained still, as he was some great businessman, finally broke. He busted into laughter. "A-and there are t-times-!" He laughed now between his words. "-w-where you are in h-humour?!"
Toothless made a scary glare offended crossed his arms. By the look on Sarah's face, he could say coming here was her idea. "I would understand them-" He pointed with only one finger, which remained by his elbow, at twins now struggling in breaths. "-but you! You aren't dumb! Why you're bothering me in my own house!"
"Because you have a problem." Behind his back, he could hear the harsh voice of Hookfang. Despite his sometimes, as he named it chicken actions, that one sentence was told confidently. Even so, Toothless remained still, not turning to him, but his temperament was cooled slightly.
"Hookfang is right." Glancing at the blond girl, his eyes went into slits. His eyes covers slightly by his bangs still showed a fire in them. Sarah remained cool and confident. "You have a problem! Don't you see you're overworking yourself?! Why weren't you at yesterday's training? Cloudjumper as I heard went furious! Besides, you love them!"
"I had my reasons." Silently, he murmurs under his breath. He wasn't pleased with telling the whole story. He preferred taking care of it himself. Besides, they would lead him away from it for sure.
"What reasons?! You have some money problems?" Before he could even answer, she shouted. "No! You don't! You're doing great! Now you're working as if it was your hobby!"
"Sarah stop that! I'm fine. It's my life, and I will do anything I would damn want!"
"Look at yourself! Did you even sleep? You have eye bags! Not even saying I'm sure you slept in those clothes!"
"Even so?!"
"Even so? You hear yourself! When the fuck would you start taking care of yourself?!"
"When I feel in need too!" Both stared at each other, like fighting animals. Around them, everyone would look at them, staying silent, even twins. He scratched his head, turned to her by side, then rapidly back to her. "You know what? I might even know! I have to prepare for school so, please get out." Everyone looked at him. Sarah was offended, and with rapid steps went outdoors, behind her everyone had done the same. He would get from them rather different glances, even so, he wouldn't care, letting everyone leave. Or at last almost everyone.
"Tobias." Glancing down, before he stood Meatlug. Her eyes didn't look angry, or furious, but saddened. Even so, she smiled at him.
"Martha, seriously, it's not a good time." His voice quietly, with guiltiness visible, exclaimed.
"I think it's the best time. I just want... to remind you those guys care about you. They do. Everything they are doing is just for your good. I know they're sometimes annoying-"
"Sometimes?"
"Okay! For you nonstop! Still, they are yours. You know, those closest ones, are the most irritating. Like in family!"
"I didn't know how it is in the family."
"Bad example. Even so, they are like family! That's why you need them. Stop treating them that way, or you're going to lose them!" His eyes avoided hers, despite their height difference, it felt like she was over him. "It can't be easy for you, I'm sure of that. You never loved or were loved back. You never cared about someone, so how could you be able to care about yourself? I'm sure someday you would find someone like that. Someone that gives you that reason to keep on. Right now, just try being, at last, a little bit nicer. Alright?" His mouth stayed shut, his mind racing as he still avoided her sight. "Alright?"
"Alright."
"Very well." She turned towards the entrance, and she slowly walked towards the exit. "See you around!" She shouted at the last second, before rushing forward.
Right. See you around.
"I told you, that it would make you feel better." Atali's voice sounded in his ears like an echo. He couldn't help but smirk, but in the same way, he was too focused on a task to even glance at her.
"I didn't think it would be that hard!" Before him, a little body was laid onto the diapering changing station. Atali giggled behind his back, he felt offended by that, but as told earlier, he was too busy. Hiccup kept moving his limp, in every direction! Isn't he getting tired of that?
"As for the first time, it isn't going the worst."
"I got it!"
He crossed his arms, chin up raised, glancing at her with a victoriously smirk. Despite it, she analyzed the little boy. "It's backward."
His arm went towards the ground, and of them, he facepalmed his forehead. "It's backward." He repeated, showing his understanding of the problem as well as his irritation.
Continuing onto task again, this now fully focused, he couldn't help, but analyze the little boy. He didn't change, but now Toothless was fully aware of his lacking leg. In the place where it should be, there was nothing, from his left knee. There was the same beanie he had earlier, from beneath which, a few hairs made their way outside. Even so, little Hiccup was just an infant, there wasn't a low amount of hair on his head. Those were brown, with slightly red by the reflection of light. Meanwhile, glancing, Hiccup was getting rather tired of those changes. Seeing it, Tobias fastens up. Hiccup's eyes yet again focused on the ceiling, sometimes getting in met with Tobias's face at which he would move faster. Every time he did, Toothless could just giggle underneath his nose.
"You're getting better." Going forward, Atali with a thoughtful look, complimented his doings.
"I'm happy you think so."
"I know, it's not knowledge needed for you now, but it might be useful in the future."
"How is that?"
"Aren't you going to be a father someday?"
He stopped suddenly, with wide eyes glanced at her, his mouth opened. His heart started beating uncontrollably. "F-father?"
"Great job! It's perfect! Well, almost at least. But, that's the problem with hospital equipment, not yours." Just then, he glanced down, seeing what she meant. Henry was all done. Comfortable now, just playing around as a child would. Of course, the diaper was a little too big, yet it seemed good enough for a hospital one. Atali went forward and took the little boy into her arms. "Alright now! Time for medicaments!" There was the sound of sobbing, coming with wailing. "Nuh, nuh, nuh. No more Tobias. Now you're stuck with me and mine medicine for you!" She went towards one of the chairs, with one arm took something which looked like a needle, he guessed it must be with some kind of syrup.
Sitting up, she made herself as well as Hiccup comfortable. He still wasn't much pleased with what was happening around him. Despite that, Toothless couldn't control himself, but smile. Gazing from his spot, he was observing the whole situation as a warm feeling encircled him. Hiccup wanted him! He cried over that, yet he wanted him! Baby out there wanted him close, missing him. Was that selfish of him, that he was rather happy about that? Probably. But, he couldn't help it! Eventually, Atali made herself as well as the Hiccup in her hold comfortable, just so she was able to closer needle toward his mouth.
Hiccup kept pushing away, likely wanting to be as far from that thing as he could. Toothless went forward, now feeling like an idiot. "Can I help somehow?"
She sighed tiredly. "Keep him distracted." As asked, he did. Kneeling, so he was at height of his head, just so little Hiccup was able to see him, he made a few cooing sounds, which helped, but not enough so. Then, the idea came into his mind now. He stood up, not too rapidly so it wouldn't scare the tiny infant before him. Toothless rushed in not known by Atali's direction, which now stared at him, still trying to applicate a medication, almost getting it into his eye. Toothless was searching for something in his backpack, then smiled victoriously as he did find his treasure. He held something black. As he moved forward, she saw in it plushie. Dragon plushie nonetheless. "Are you sure he wouldn't get frightened by it?"
"Trust me." He then showed it off before Hiccup, which remained automatically still. He stared at the black mass before. Despising that, it was almost his size, he didn't look scared, but rather interested, amazed. Atali was now able to get the needle into his mouth, slowly getting said liquid into his little stomach. He didn't seem to be minded by that. Thankfully, she nodded at Tobias, and afterward, both could continue the conversation, without looking at each other because of their attention over activities. He was the first to speak. "Did the police find something?"
She sighed sadly, her sight focused on the boy. "They are still trying, but that case is much more complicated than they thought it would be."
His sight went towards her, as he was confused. "What that means?"
"Well, in the documentary there wasn't any boy named Henry born in Berk lately."
His eyes went wide, motion with which he would hold onto the toy, showing it to Hiccup stopped. Seeing little ones distress over it, immediately started again, yet still looked questioningly at her. "Maybe, you looked over a few weeks. He might be older than that."
"By our calculations, Henry was born on 29 February. We knew it might be more and less, that's why we also checked it by the difference of month, but it didn't change a thing. There isn't any information."
"How is that even possible?!"
"Whoever his parents were, they might have good contacts. Someone who without any problem cleared every information about him. That's indeed monstrous to just clear your child from your life."
"Obviously."
Meanwhile, Hiccup ended the whole needle. Instructed by Atali, Toothless was about to get him against his shoulder, so his body was straightened, not causing any backing or vomiting of medication. It was again time, he had the mobility of holding himself. Atali didn't have any problem with that, she seemed even happier when she let him do so. Tobias couldn't help but smile comfortably. For a slight moment, he raised Hiccup higher, so he was almost over his head, able to see him whole. Hiccup's eyes went wide, his whole body was tense and he looked once at him, once around with interest observing his surrounding. Excited and curious huh? For a mere moment, he forgot even that Atali was indeed still with them, turning to her he noticed she smiled brightly. Too brightly, she had something going on. He did towards her suspicious look, but then he noticed something far more interesting. Polaroid photos.
"What are these?" Going forward, his sight gets caught by all of them. There was children, and adults, of different age. There was happiness that streamed through them, some smiled brightly, some weakly, but all of them still stayed joyful. When he got her attention, he pointed at those, showing her what he meant.
"R-right!" For some reason, his voice kept being strangely suspected, but he pushed bad thoughts back into his head. "These are my children. I mean, not my children. My patients." Her hand went towards the Polaroid camera, which was placed just underneath said photos, taped to a white wall. "Just when they were about to leave, I would make a foto of them and put it here. If they would let me so."
"That's a great idea." His eyes remained on them. Then, he felt soft breathing against his shoulder, reminding him of a tiny body against his. "What about Hiccup? Will he get here?"
"That depends. If he would get adoptive parents before his leaving, if they will let me, I would. I can't just take a photo of him and hang it here. Even if I wish I could."
Toothless glanced at the ground after her words, his arms tightening around the little boy. "Right..."
She straighten and turned to him. "I think it's time for him to eat. Do you want another lesson?" Delicately, he shrugged his shoulders, in a way showing his lack of problem with that. "Then sit up. I will bring a bottle."
Looking around, he found a chair he liked. He carefully sat up, motioning tiny boy, so he was now against his chest. His big eyes stared at him, he just smiled and lived through probably the sweetest sight he ever saw. He smiled! At last, he tried to smile since he didn't quite understand what he had done, yet he smiled! He smiled at him! That's when he felt something wet against his cheek. Wiping it, he indeed noticed it was a tear. Tear of happiness. Did he ever cry out of happiness?
"I'm back! There you go." Atali handed him a little bottle. Afterward, her hands motioned his how to hold him acceptable, eventually, when everything seemed to be in its place, Hiccup started eating. "Good work. Just a little bit higher-" She pushed his arm upright. "Exactly!"
Tobias snarled, but a smile on his face remained, showing it wasn't in a mocking way. He looked down onto Hiccup, his eyes were closed, peacefully he was sucking onto bootle, with his head trying to reach its whole. For Tobias, that view was indeed peaceful, then he reminded himself of something. "His future parents would be lucky to have him."
"That's nice of you to say. Still, such a kid is a responsibility. He would have it hard for him to get them."
Toothless nodded. "I know. Medication, caring-"
"Prothesis."
"Prothesis?"
"Obviously. They are pretty expensive."
"I wouldn't say so. He is an infant still. He wouldn't need one towards his first year, even so, he would get one from city insurance."
"City can't just give him a Prothesis. It's something which would be bought by his parents!"
"No. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't."
"Don't be such stubborn. How would you know that?"
He stared at her. Then, one of his legs showed his leg ankle by raising his pants. For Atali surprise was that something shined in there. Something metal. Prosthetic. "Experience."
Atali avoided his sight, now focused on tiny Hiccup. Her cheek burned red color. "I'm sorry. It was probably offensive towards you."
"None of that was taken." Awkward silence remained, Toothless sighed, still sight focused on his charge. "It's not money that's important in here, Atali. From my all life experience, I already know how it works, and believe me, you would be surprised. Much of people are living with the thought, that for adoption, you have to be rich nonetheless. It's terrible to lie. Do you think as a child I sat there, waiting for someone to get me a cozy, luxurious house? You thought I wished for Prothesis made out of gold? I would prefer to stay without it if I could get family. I was begging for someone to hug me! I was begging for someone to say they love me! When I got that stupid piece of metal from the city by age of 3, my life remained as horrible as it was, but not much different. This little boy didn't need someone to buy him safety. He needs someone who would love him, no matter what."
Atali looked at him and was rather impressed. She breathed loudly at such confession. "I guess, that's because you're such closed to him." At that moment, the little palm made its way towards the big one, getting held onto it, still focusing on eating. Seeing it, Toothless smiled.
"Atali, I'm looking at him, and I'm seeing myself."
2 a.m already. His head spun tiredly, yet he had work to do. His laptop screen already killed his eyes off. He was getting dangerously close to gazing off. Notifications of his phone, set by him, were the only ones that kept him awake. He yawned loudly, he is bend over the desk, looking hungrily over the bed beside him. The only light now was a lamp, which stood by his cabinet with a cloth over which placed as well a calendar. He sighed, let's just end it already. In search of documents, without any looking, he just kept with his hand trying to touch and feel the good ones, just then something strange happened. He didn't find documents, it was something different. Likely photo?
Toothless took it into his palm, get it out from his backpack and then his heart started beating loudly. Polaroid photo, Atali must have done it when he didn't look. There he was, holding a tiny Hiccup in his grasp, smiling comfortably. At that moment, the little boy looked directly at him, his eyes met with his. His mouth went wide, but after a mere moment, he couldn't just let himself not to, but to smile so brightly, that he didn't remember he got muscles by those parts of the face. He stood up from his desk, work already forgotten. He had a memory of Hiccup now! ...But then, why it wasn't enough for him?
He was saddened now, and without his knowing, a few tears made their way into his eyes. Why wasn't it enough?! By the time, Hiccup might find adoptive parents, that would be the perfect solution for sure, but why did it hurt him so much? It was well known that it would happen, but then he would never see him again. His tears likely like a waterfall swam through his face. With his shelve, he wiped them, but it didn't help him much. It doesn't matter how much it hurts, he promised, he would help him, no matter what. He was going to do something his father couldn't do for him. He was going to find the Hiccup home he deserved. He promised he would. He won't break that promise.
He stood up, but before taking a piece of tape with himself. With it, just next to the calendar, he attached foto onto the wall. He smiled brightly at that, then he squinted painfully. After a moment of staring at that photo, he just collapsed onto his bed, closing his eyes, which almost instantly got him asleep.
"I will keep on, for you buddy. I promise."
