Chapter FOURTEEN - A party that I am hideously underdressed for!
Amanda pulled up to the building that four years ago she had no idea what she was walking into. She laughed to herself thinking that she thought Lee was a gangster. She had been so silly back then. She remembered there was something in those beautiful hazel green eyes that seemed to call to her. She didn't see anyone as she pulled up in front and stopped the car. She got out and walked through the doors. She walked into the main lobby and it looked like it was decorated for a wedding. There were white, red and yellow flowers everywhere and candles glowing all around the foyer. Flowers were draped all along the staircase and Amanda could see a tent outside. She was so focused on the flowers and decorations she didn't even see Lee make his way to the top of the stairs and stand there like he did so many years ago. He smiled as he watched her and couldn't get over how utterly beautiful she was. And she was his…forever.
"Mrs. King"
Amanda turned around and looked up at the top of the stairs. There stood her husband and partner, Lee Stetson. He was wearing a tuxedo, just like he did the first time she met him there. He was beaming at her with all of his dimples showing. For a brief moment Amanda felt as if it was the first time they had met. He was just as handsome now as he was then…probably more so now. His beautiful hazel eyes were dancing as he made his way to the bottom of the stairs. She met him at the last step and smiled at him.
"Hello Mr. Stetson"
Lee couldn't control himself and scooped Amanda up into a passionate embrace. He kissed her with every feeling he had. They were breathless when they broke apart. Amanda had trouble concentrating. Lee whispered in her ear.
"Seems you are hideously underdressed for this party, Mrs. Stetson. The nightgown was a nice touch, by the way." He kissed her again and said " I suggest you go upstairs and get yourself ready. We have somewhere to be. I love you."
Amanda didn't even have time to say anything to Lee when her mother, Francine and Carrie all came from behind Lee and ushered Amanda upstairs. She had a split second to say "I love you" to him and she was shoved into the women's dressing room. Lee laughed as he watched his wife being whisked away.
Amanda sat down on the chair Francine plopped her into and she needed a minute. "Whoa ladies! What is happening? Why are you all dressed like that? Will someone please tell me what Lee is planning?"
Dotty went over to her daughter and put her hands on Amanda's shoulders. " Oh darling! That sweet man of yours has planned not only a scavenger hunt for you for the day…He planned your wedding! Right here, right now! Isn't that the most romantic thing you have ever heard!?"
Francine laughed "I never knew he had it in him to be this romantic. You bring something out in him Amanda….that's for sure. So, we need to get you ready! So sit back and relax! Dotty and I have this taken care of!"
Amanda sat there with fresh happy tears in her eyes. Lee wanted to marry her on the anniversary of the day they met. She couldn't think of a more perfect moment. She smiled at her mother and Francine and let them work on her hair and make up. Carrie came over with Amanda's dress in her arms.
"Oh Amanda! Where did Lee find this dress? It's gorgeous!'
Amanda looked over at the dress and she looked at Francine. Her friend nodded and smiled at her. The dress had a delicate lace top with long sleeves and a tulle and lace skirt. It had been cleaned and repaired from the last time Amanda wore the dress. Ship of Spies. Amanda giggled to herself as she remembered wearing the dress on a case with Lee about a year after they had met. She was overcome with how much Lee was putting their life with the Agency into their day and their wedding. She listened to Dotty tell Carrie that the only thing Lee said about the dress was that he had his ways. Francine walked over to Amanda and whispered "Lee asked if I would get this dress out of the Agency's wardrobe. Is there something I should know about this dress?"
Amanda smiled and giggled. "It was the dress I wore when Lee and I had to get married when we helped his friend Orlando."
Francine nodded her head and understood. "Lee is certainly racking up points in the romance department today. What's with this place? I never knew about it. What is so special about this place?"
As Francine worked on Amanda's makeup and hair she explained that the first time she and Lee ever really talked was at a Halloween party Lee asked her to come to. "It was here that I found out he was a spy. So…it really is special to us."
Francine smiled "Well, I think he's done a pretty great job in letting you know exactly how he feels about you, Amanda King. You know, I want you to know that I am not upset about you keeping your marriage a secret. I get it. I am really happy for you and Lee."
Amanda reached over and took her friend's hand. "Thank you Francine. I am really sorry we didn't say anything."
Francine laughed "You both really aren't fooling anyone. Especially this past year. You have been inseparable. It was so obvious." Francine stood back and helped Amanda into the wedding dress. Amanda looked at herself in the mirror and tried to hold back the tears. Francine looked at her friend and said "Okay…let's get you married! You look beautiful!"
Francine and Carrie went out to let Lee know that Amanda was ready. Amanda walked over to the window where Dotty was looking out. She turned around and looked at her daughter. Amanda was indeed a beautiful woman. She had never looked lovelier than in this moment. The dress Lee had picked out seemed to be made for Amanda. Francine had managed to pin some of the yellow and white flowers into Amanda's hair. Dotty walked over to Amanda and took her hands. She leaned over and kissed her cheek.
"Oh Amanda. You are beautiful! Lee isn't going to be able to speak!"
"Thank you Mother. I guess Lee told you everything, huh?"
Dotty patted Amanda's hand. "Oh darling, I knew about the two of you being married. I figured it out after your accident. But the federal agent part….that was something I wasn't expecting." She held her hand up before Amanda could say anything. "Every crazy thing you have done in the past four years now makes sense. I understand. Lee explained everything to me. I am not mad. I am okay. Really. I know that you are the best team that the Agency has and I am proud that you are my daughter. My baby saves the world! I wish I could tell people that but I know….need to know and everything. So, I am just going to tell you what I told Lee." Dotty hugged her daughter and said " You take care of him and he will take care of you. It seems that it's what you have been doing all along. He loves you so much Amanda. I am so glad that he's in our lives and has been. He's been the missing piece for our family. I am so happy for you both!"
Amanda fought back tears and hugged her mother back "Oh Mother! Thank you! I love you!"
Dotty reached over and put her hand on the side of Amanda's face. "Well, Missy! Let's get you married! Let's go!"
Amanda took her mothers arm and they walked out of the dressing room. Dotty told Amanda to wait at the top of the stairs for the music to start and then the ceremony would begin. She hugged Amanda once more and made her way downstairs. Amanda took a deep breath and waited for the music. She was actually having a wedding and she knew Lee was waiting for her at the bottom of the stairs.
