Uncharted Waters
Sometimes, Justin Vandervelde didn't think he was interested in girls. No, he'd always known he wasn't interested in girls.
It'd been obvious since puberty, around the time his father had made Football Sundays a thing in hopes of getting his son into a "manlier" sport. Those'd tapered off when Justin took up boxing, but by then, the attraction to footballers had already made its niche.
Enter Ted Thompson. Whether it was his overall pretty boy looks (pleasingly Grecian) or just the deep blue of his eyes (Justin could just swim in them!), the Prep was head over heels for the star quarterback. Unfortunately, Ted was already with the head cheerleader, apart from which he didn't seem to notice anyone who wasn't a Jock.
So, in addition to throwing himself even more into the sports he was already into, Justin began attending every game and practice, just for a chance to watch him in action. Maybe Ted would notice him and his love of sports, and would, at the very least, be open to having a Prep friend.
Some things worked themselves out. Mandy broke up with Ted, and Justin was certain that he'd gotten the Jock leader's attention. How else to explain those furtive glances in swim class? There was only one way to know for sure.
After the big game (which thankfully wasn't ruined by Hopkins this time!), Justin approached Ted when he was away from the other Jocks, licked his suddenly dry lips… and just went for it. He braced himself for a rejection, for the Jock leader to push him away. Instead, Ted took him back to his room and what happened next was a blur. A painful, exhilarating blur that ended with him and the quarterback collapsing into an exhausted heap.
As Justin's about to drift into sleep, he hears Ted sigh, then feels as if there's a chill between them. Inwardly panicking for reasons best left unsaid, the Prep nuzzles deeper into the crook of the Jock's neck. Ted sighs again, softer and less strained, before draping an arm around him.
Justin lets himself drift off, his hope springing eternal.
