Dean twisted to avoid the long arm with the poisoned tipped talons. The space was getting smaller and his pulse was faster . A voice called out his name. The voice came from the other side of his bed. It called out again and pulled him from his nightmare. Heart still racing, Dean turned to his partner, placing his head on their bare chest. There was comfort in the steady beat of the heart beneath his ear. His own heart began to slow, his breath came easier. No monsters dwelt in these arms. As he calmed the sheer physical exhaustion of the past two days swiftly drew him back into sleep. With his last bit of brief consciousness a slurred " I need you". Castiel caressed the sleepers cheek. Dean half smiled and nestled in closer.
The last two days had been grueling even for an Angel. Castiel did not need to sleep but he did need time to rebuild his reserves. He also knew this extraordinary man would not sleep well. When innocents died Dean never did. He would be beside Dean. Many things about humans confused him. Not this though. Dean let him see his moments of pain and fear as well as those of joy. He shared the times when doubt crept in. Dean let Cas see the wounded parts of his soul. With the now peacefully sleeping man beside him, Castiel said aloud "I love you" too.
