Pathfinder never knew what he was; he knew someone created him but not more than that. After all he was just a robot with a quest for answers. Battles in the apex games were a way of finding that : maybe he could find something or someone that could give him the explanation he needed.
Battles in the apex games had also been a way of meeting with people that the MRVN loved to call "friends" even though they rarely retaliated to his friendly gestures. It pained him a little but he understood they had to focus on more important things like getting shot at for exemple. ''Path get down !'' and that was exactly what was happening to him right now, fun !
He was in the king's canyon with two other people as always. His partner for this match were the lonely and paranoid hacker : Crypto and someone that Pathfinder liked a lot someone that was like him in a sense someone without a real identity someone in search of who she truly was : Wraith the voidwalker
On the outside Wraith was a very cold woman with trust problems which was to be expected, people told him. Pathfinder never understood the mental trauma of his fellow apex fighters but the more he battled with them the more human he felt and he started understanding people's emotion and if not at least acknowledge them and try to relate.
He grew to like her more than the other and it really wounded him when she would not respond to his friendly gestures. He understood it of course she was like that with everyone but he couldn't shake the feeling that everyone was somehow avoiding him. The only one always responding to his high five and being friendly was the electric blond from Solace : Wattson but then again she was friendly with everyone.
Oddly enough Wraith always stood close to him when they were in the dropship, she wasn't saying a word but she sat there next to him her eyes not really focused on anything it was just soothing to have her here. The reality of fighting brought the MRVN back in from his thoughts. To his side Wraith was patching up with a syringe while Crypto was taking cover behind a wall and used his drone to scout for other threats. ''There is only one team we can take the fight.'' Crypto said through the intercom. The raven haired void walker was already reloading her wingman ready to fight. ''Path can you cover me while I make a run for it ? I need to get close.'' Wraith asked, peeking from her cover to spot the enemies. ''You got it friend !" Path said with his excited robotic voice. "Crypto do you have your EMP ?'' she only got a hum for an answer through the intercom. ''Then use it once I am out of my phasing." she ordered and another hum followed.
The raven haired woman disappeared leaving an ethereal trail behind her signaling she was void walking. Pathfinder heeded her orders and shot at the enemy squad with his sniper rifle to attract the attention on him. The enemy never witnessed the void energy pulsing close to them nor the white flying drone above their head.
A sudden shot hit him in his metallic body and another one hit his torso screen he flinched but held on, Wraith wasn't positioned yet he needed to hold on for his friend.
Another shot and a grenade knocked him down and just when he was falling down he saw the EMP pulsing through the air in an electric explosion and Wraith put a bullet in the head of one of the enemy squad members. With a thumbs up he fell to the ground hoping his squad would be fine.
Fine they were as the victory was achieved and they were the champions. Unfortunately for him there had been no opportunity to bring him back as the ring or enemies were always on their tails. Watching from the med bay wasn't so bad so he was fine. He could cheer for his friends from there and act excited when either the hacker or the void walker were beating up their enemies.
Once it was over his two squadmates appeared in the med bay to get back home Pathfinder immediately rose up to meet them. ''High five !'' he cheered lifting his hand in the air as Crypto just passed by ignoring the MARVN. Path hung his head low, saddened by the lack of response but a sound made him look up : Wraith had actually responded to the gesture hitting his hand with her own, a small smirk forming on her lips. ''Good job Path sorry we couldn't get you back.'' she said and his chest screen lit up with a yellow smiley face. ''No problem friend I'm happy you're safe !'' her face was unreadable as if his words were too much and he overstepped the boundaries, something he did often. "We're friends right ?'' He asked unsure and she softly laughed. ''Of course Path we're friends.'' she lightly hit his shoulder and moved past him sitting down and stretching her tired limbs.
Wraith was his friend and Wraith was kind behind all this edgelord attitude as Mirage would say.
A real friend ? Exciting !
