Chapter 2: Friends
第二章:友達
Dai Nishō: Tomodachi
(OST: EP 1 Score – Ruby Rose)
In the slums that lined the outside of Vale, three individuals were currently hiding in one of the many abandoned buildings that decorated that part of the city. One of them would smoke a cigar, as he would look at the second of the trio.
"Honestly, you'd think we'd be better off using that old man as a Dust crystal farm. We could have gotten rich that way."
The other member of the trio would chuckle lightly, before retorting, "Honestly, maybe she's just gauging how good that gun guy is. Maybe he has a few tricks up his sleeve. Besides, I've got an idea for the next big break!"
Holding the tablet in her hand, it would show a picture of Beacon Academy, as she would then mention, "They're 'aving Initiation in two days. Something something test to get into the academy, like I'd care about that fuss. There's Grimm in that forest. We could definitely one or two of those people in the Initiation to agree with us so that they don't die from the black monster things, don't ya think, Yuki?"
The first individual, Yuki would chuckle, before taking another hit from his cigar. "Hah, like you're the kind of person to do research, Kiyou!"
Yuki would then turn to the second individual once again, before wondering out loud, "You got a plan going on in your head or something, Saki-chan? About that guy who helped the people who were fighting against Torchwick?"
Saki would remain deep in thought, sitting on the one abandoned couch in the building and browsing through the tablet in her hand, before she would mutter, "Interesting. Need more testing to see strength. Dusk, tomorrow. I have an idea. "
"Make sure you don't drain our reserves making the monster tonight." Yuki would mutter to Saki, as Kiyou would go back to the tablet she was holding, fired up and playing whatever games she was playing on it.
Saki would continue looking at her tablet, not once her head ever facing up. Yuki would then step onto the balcony, holding a pipette in his hand as he chuckled a little.
"This whole chaos thing is fun." He muttered to himself.

(OST: EP 2 Score – The Shining Beacon, Pt. 1)
As the flying vehicle that Ruby, Yang and Kuen were passengers of would land, multiple other individuals would leave the ships as well, taking in the sights of the academy that towered over them, almost like a kaiju compared to their size. At the same time, another particular student would rush out of the ship, heading to the nearest trash can and puking his breakfast out.
Gross.
The three would also step out of the flying vehicle, walking the paved road that led into the school compound, much to their own amazement. The sheer 'everything' of Beacon Academy was hard to take in, compared to Signal Academy (something that Ruby and Yang were more familiar with), Beacon felt... bigger. The same could be said for Kuen, and it was amplified by the fact he only had the town of Vale as comparison.
"Wow..." The two sisters muttered in unison.
"You'd think I'd get used to it by now, but somehow no..." Kuen would comment as well. "I'm... going to go head to register for the semester, if you don't mind me."
Conveniently, he would disappear, leaving the two sisters to their own devices. Said devices consisting of Ruby Rose fan-girling over the various weapons she saw and Yang Xiao Long attempting to restrain Ruby from doing said fan-girling.
Walking up to the counter, making his way to the registration area after a few minutes of following the signs plastered to the walls, he would take out his wallet, fishing out what appeared to be an identity card of sorts.
"Manner of business?" The receptionist manning the front desk asked, in that very monotonous tone undoubtedly associated with something of her calibre.
"Uhh. Registration."
"Alright, just confirming. May I have the assigned identity card?"
Kuen would nod, passing his ID to the clerk, as she would then insert it into a barcode scanner of some sorts, waiting for a brief moment. And after said brief moment, the monitor in front of her would display his personal details.
"Kuen Akegata, first year student at Beacon Academy. Am I correct?"
"Uhh, yep."
Taking back his ID that would be given by the receptionist, she would then proceed to pass to him a piece of paper with four digits on them, a code of sorts.
"The piece of paper is four your locker number..." The receptionist then explained. "And the mess hall where you'll be staying temporarily for the night will be on the right, and the cafeteria and auditorium on your left."
Confused, Kuen would then inquired, "Wait, temporarily? What do you mean by that?"
"You'll be staying at a mess hall temporarily for the night, until you get your respective rooms tomorrow evening. And since it's still roughly pretty early in the morning, you're free to roam the hallways and look around, as the orientation speech begins in the late afternoon."
"Oh, got it. Thank you." Kuen bowed politely in response, before placing his ID back into his wallet.
And now, Kuen's jaw was now metaphorically on the ground. It would have been literally, but his jaw's not that wide.
"When she said everybody, I didn't think she was going to mean everybody..."
Looking around, Kuen noticed that the mess hall seemed to be mostly bare, except for a few people who'd already checked in, setting their stuff respectively. Kuen would also notice a few other rooms, presumably the bathrooms, shower rooms, and the locker room the receptionist had mentioned contained the locker he'd be using.
"That's... probably the purpose of this slip of paper."
Holding the slip of paper in his hand, he would quickly head to the locker room, spending a good and undoubtedly not-wasted amount of time looking for his locker number. And finding the correct one, Kuen would groan at the mechanism that was used, before twisting the dial to the correct numbers. And for a moment, he felt like a master safecracker. Except the fact that this locker could probably be brute-forced into.
Whatever.
Opening the locker door, Kuen would shove most of his stuff inside, keeping his blaster and the gear he'd used on him; placing the latter into his pocket and hoisting the former onto his belt, he would immediately head out. Running back in Ruby's and Yang's location, his train of thought would proceed to be interrupted by the sound of a loud explosion in the background, much to his own confusion.
Considering it'd made him jump too.
"What in the f-"
And that made Kuen run ever-so-slightly faster than before.
As he almost arrived on the scene, he would notice small vial rolling towards his leg, before he would then pick it up, looking at the design engraved into the plastic vial.
"S.D.C.? Isn't that the, like, Dust company thing?"
Proceeding to pocket the vial as well, he would then head to the explosion site, before noticing three girls present at the location. A girl in white, a girl in black, and... Ruby? And a bunch of luggage crates scattered throughout the entire scene.
"It's heiress, actually." The girl in black stated. "Weiss Schnee, heiress to the Schnee Dust Company, one of the largest producers of energy propellant in the world."
"Finally! Some recognition!" The girl in white spoke, undoubtedly Weiss Schnee. Kuen was sure of that, considering he'd heard about her in the news yesterday. Or was it the day before?
The girl in black would then retort with, "The same company infamous for its controversial labour forces and questionable business partners."
"Wha- how dare- the nerve of… ugh!" Weiss screamed, much to Kuen's confusion.
And by the time he'd arrived on the situation, not only had both Weiss, and the girl in black, disappeared, but Ruby was now in the crater, a defeated look in her eyes.
Walking up to the girl in red, he would offer a hand to her, hiding the look of nervousness that was beginning to take over his entire face. "Hey, Rubes, need a hand?"
"Y-yeah, I suppose so."
Said nickname he'd mentioned would cause Kuen to blink in surprise.
Minutes had passed since the whole explosion shenanigan, and at this point, they were now in another conversation, this particular one concerned with passing the time, to be honest. They'd already known each other by now, so there weren't any introductions to be done there. Though...
They'd made a new friend in the form of a Jaune Arc. And the two of them definitely recognized him as the blonde boy who did you know what.
The three continued to pace around the courtyard, as Kuen decided to take a moment to admire the scenery around him as Ruby and Jaune continued arguing about the thing that they were arguing about.
Decorating the courtyard in this particular area were neatly-arranged rows of scenic trees of all kinds, architecture that seemed to love arcs more than anything, and a small winding road next to a river that seemed to flow cleanly.
"But all I'm saying is that motion sickness is a much more common problem than people let me on!" Jaune retorted to Ruby's claim, the latter chuckling in response.
"Yeah, look, I'm sorry! Vomit Boy was the first thing that came to mind!"
Kuen then proceeded to interject with a brief, "Well, considering the state I found you in, would you like to call you Crater Face while we're at it?"
"Hey! That explosion was an accident." Ruby pouted a little.
The reaction almost caused Kuen to cackle, but he barely managed to stiffly it just in time for Jaune to properly introduce himself, "Well, the name's Jaune Arc! Short! Sweet! Rolls off the tongue! Ladies love it!"
A brief silence.
A slightly-longer silence that was now beginning to become awkward.
A silence that was going on for a bit too long.
"...but do they though?" Kuen asked sarcastically, trying to dissipate that aura of awkwardness.
"They will! Well, I-I hope they will! My mom always said that- you know what, never mind." Jaune responded.
Once again, awkward silence. Too long for anyone's tastes.
Thankfully, Ruby was quick to help with the odd atmosphere, as she would then proceed to pull out her weapon.
Jaune would then ask, "The hell is tha-"
His words were cut off, as Ruby unfolded the device in her hand, swinging it around her like she'd done before fighting Roman Torchwick's goons, the extensions in the blade beginning to unfold. Said weapon would fully unfold in a scythe, much to Jaune's surprise. Kuen didn't react with much, mainly because she'd done the same thing when he'd asked her about her... weapon thing, the day before.
Ruby would gleam in almost pure joy, as the blade would be sent into the ground. "Well, I've got this thing!"
Jaune then asked in pure shock, "Woah! Is that a scythe?!"
"Yep! It's also a customizable high-impact sniper rifle!"
Jaune was left in confusion, as Kuen chimed in, "Also a gun."
"Oh, that's cool!" The blonde boy responded, as Kuen felt a lingering sense of deja-vu from what he'd said. Maybe somebody else had heard that phrase before, and he'd adopted it by accident.
"So, what've you got, Jaune?" Ruby then asked, before Jaune pulled out a simple sword, with a gray blade, brown cross-guard, and a navy blue hilt.
"I got this sword!"
"Ooh!" Ruby replied, before Jaune pulled out the sheath of the weapon, as it then suddenly expanded, deploying it into a white shield, with a golden emblem on the center, "I've also got a shield!"
"So... what do they do?" Ruby asked again, taking a good look at the shield, as Jaune fumbled a little with his weapons.
From the shield retracting, to expanding, to retracting, in that order, before it finally properly shrunk back into its original size.
"The shield gets smaller, so when I get tired of carrying it, I can just... uh, put it away..."
Kuen then asked, very much confused, "But... wouldn't it weigh the same?"
"Yeah, it does..." Jaune sighed dejectedly, before he then turned to Kuen, asking, "And what about you?"
Kuen would pull out the blaster he'd used the night before to help Ruby and Professor Goodwitch, holding it by the grip. "Well, you know how your weapon is a sword?"
Jaune would nod confusedly, before Kuen would then state, "Well, mine is a blaster. Good for firing blasts at other monsters and firing at other monsters. Pretty much the only function of the weapon I can see. No changing modes like Ruby's weapon or anything."
Though Ruby was as interested in it as she was the night before.
No, get your mind out of the gutter. You know what I mean.
Kuen would then pull out the small gear he'd also used the night before. "It normally fires energy rounds, somehow. There isn't a clip slot or anything on it, to be completely honest. But, when I use this gear, it lets me shoot solid bolts of light, like a blaster from Star Wars or something."
Once again, Ruby was very interested in it. Which was a little surprising considering Kuen had let her see the weapon after the whole interrogation stint that Professor Goodwitch had pulled.
"Regardless, compared to us two, you're really a weapon nut, huh, Ruby?" Kuen asked, a smile on his face.
Ruby sheepishly rubbed her black, responding with, "Well, I'm kind of a dork when it comes to weapons... it shows since I kinda went overboard with designing my weapon, after all."
Jaune looked at Ruby, the former then asking, "Wait, you made that?!"
"Of course! All students at Signal forge their own weapons! Didn't you make yours?"
"It's a hand-me-down. My great-great-grandfather used it to fight in the war." Jaune replied, as Kuen also replied, "Like I told you last night, I got mine. Didn't make mine."
Ruby then commented, almost cheekily, "Sounds more like a family heirloom to me! Well, I like it! Not many people have an appreciation for the classics these days."
"Yeah, the classics..." Jaune trailed off, sighing a little more.
Ruby then turned to Kuen, asking genuinely, "So why'd you help me out back there in the courtyard?"
Kuen immediately responded, "I was drawn to the crater." And a chuckle left his lips, as Ruby pouted a little.
"Hey, uhh, where are we going anyways?" Ruby then wondered.
Jaune replied almost instinctively, "Oh, uhh, I dunno! I was following you...!"
The two of them stared at Kuen, before he shrugged. "I know where it is, don't worry. Though... it's later, I'm pretty sure."
Checking his watch, he continued, "Yep, it's still pretty early." Ruby let out a large sigh of relief, before chuckling awkwardly.
And Jaune almost instinctively quipped once again, "I need to go do something real quick."
And he proceeded to disappear, leaving the two of them to mind their own business. And that was going to be an issue for Kuen, as he almost froze from the awkwardness and nervousness.
"So... what do we talk about now?" Kuen asked.
"I dunno." Ruby responded instinctively.
Great. Two people who were bad at social interactions having to interact with each other. Sure, they knew each other because of the night before, but it felt like a repeat of that.
(OST: EP 3 Score – The Shining Beacon, Pt. 2)
"Anyways, you've already registered, right?" Kuen then asked Ruby, as the two walked down the hallway leading to the entrance of the main building.
The response was a simple, "Yep. The one you told me to go to."
Kuen nodded, before he then noted. "Admittedly, I'm not a fan of the whole mess hall thing they have going on. Considering it's just a lot of boys and girls together in one room in one big sleep-over..."
Ruby turned to Kuen, confused, though the latter quickly interjected, "Something something social norms. It'll take a while getting used to."
She let out a weird, 'Oh.', as the two entered the main building.
"You think your sister managed to save a spot for you?"
"I'm hoping so, that's for sure!"
Kuen let out a chuckle, as the two entered the main auditorium where the opening speech was going to be held. And unsurprisingly, it was significantly more massive, and more crowded than expected. He hadn't gotten a chance to take a look at this part of the academy, which meant he was caught by surprise.
Trying to figure out what the hell was going on, Kuen felt almost completely blinded by the sheer amount of hustle and bustle, bringing into mind the city streets of Vale he'd seen a few days prior. And from afar, the two soon-to-be students heard Yang's voice call out from the distance.
"Rubes! Over here! I saved you a spot or two!"
Kuen let out a smile. "Well, that's pleasant. Hopefully, there's two seats there."
And the two strolled over, as Jaune looked around the auditorium, trying to find a seat of his own.
"Ah, great. Where am I supposed to find another nice, quirky girl to talk to?!" Jaune asked to himself, as from afar, a girl clad in metallic armor of a spartan design was clearly watching him, hand on her hips as she watched him walk away.
And as Kuen and Ruby joined Yang, the latter would then ask, "How's your first day going, little sister? Already made a friend, I see?"
Kuen would point in Jaune's direction, nodding in the process, as Ruby then replied, "You mean since you ditched me and I exploded?"
"Yikes!" Yang looked at her younger sister, confused. "Meltdown already?"
Kuen then immediately interjected, "Literally. Not metaphorically."
Yang would keep her confused face, before they would hear the sound of footsteps stomping in their direction. And as the three turned to see the source of the footsteps, it was Weiss Schnee, the you-know-who girl from earlier.
"You!" The girl in white screamed, much to the fright of Ruby, who'd somehow, managed to jump into her sister's arms, the girl in red screaming in response, "Oh god, it's happening again!"
Weiss angrily screamed, "You're lucky we weren't blown off the side of the cliff!"
Yang could only state, in a deadpan tone, "Oh, dear Oum, you really exploded."
Ruby was almost stuck in a looping dialogue, almost akin to that of an NPC, as she mumbled something along the lines of 'It was an accident!', until her train of thought was suddenly interrupted by the act of a pamphlet being held in front of her face.
"What the- what's this?" Ruby asked, frightfully.
Weiss would then somehow manage to go on a tangent that somehow was both related and not related to the Schnee Dust Company and blah blah blah Kuen knew that he had to eventually interrupt, the girl in white listing off policy after policy that he didn't know even existed.
"The Schnee Dust Company is not responsible for any injuries or damages sustained while operating a Schnee Dust Company product. Although not mandatory, the Schnee Family highly encourages their customers to read and familiarize themselves with this easy to follow guide to Dust applications and practices in the field-"
Kuen would proceed to snatch the pamphlet from Weiss' hands, skimming through the brochure, much to the disdain of said girl in white.
"Hey- what do you think you're doing?!" She screamed at him, before he politely replied, "Reading the pamphlet like you asked to, Ms. Weiss Schnee."
Weiss would look at him furiously, before all of their attention would be drawn to the massive stage in the middle of the amphitheater, where Professor Ozpin stood, readying a microphone.
"Ozpin..." Kuen muttered to himself, as Yang would let Ruby down, helping her get back onto her two feet.
Said headmaster would then cough loudly, getting the attention of everyone present in the hall as he began his speech.
"I'll keep this brief. You have traveled here today in search of knowledge, to hone your craft and acquire new skills. And when you have finished, you plan to dedicate your life to the protection of the people. But I look amongst you, and all I see is wasted energy, in need of purpose. Direction."
Everyone could only react with whispers and commotion, as Kuen tried to figure out and decipher what the hell the professor was even talking about.
The headmaster would step off the stage, before the vice headmaster, Professor Goodwitch, would step onto the stage, stating briefly, "You will gather in the ballroom tonight; tomorrow, your initiation begins. Be ready. You are dismissed."
And the level of noise in the auditorium went from zero to one-hundred in a heartbeat, as most of them prepared to leave the auditorium.
Yang then wondered, "He seemed kind of... off..." Ruby immediately responded.
"It's almost like he wasn't even there." Kuen then quipped in, "Maybe a hologram of some kind? I don't see that as being too far-fetched, given the circumstances."
As if, he thought to himself. He wasn't too sure on believing that holograms existed, but if he was now a student in a school where holding weapons are required, he guessed he should trust in that decision of his...
(BGM: Forever Fall)
As the sun started to go down, Kuen would walk through the hallways of Beacon Academy, figuring that it'd take his mind off everything that happened today. The whole thing with Ruby and Yang, that one thing with Weiss Schnee and the girl in black, that other thing with Jaune Arc. It was somehow so confusing, yet at the same time he'd felt like he'd understood everything.
He was confused.
And cruising through the empty hallways, he finally allowed himself to take peeks in each of the classes that would be designated for the first-year students, to get a feel for what his first semester here was going to be like.
"This is just... fucking surreal, man." He commented to himself.
And as he headed to the room he had used earlier, he heard the sound of metal being swung, almost jumping in surprise, though he kept his mouth shut. Noticing that the door was open, he peeked his head in, mentally very confused.
'Is there somebody there?' Kuen thought to himself.
And his theory seemed to be confirmed, as he saw a female, clad in metallic armor that resembled one of those Greek warriors he'd read about, executing what he assumed were combat motions. The sword in her hand swung through the air like nothing, like a hot knife slicing through butter. Her arms were fluid, as Kuen found himself in awe at the sight that was going on.
'Feels like she's a master at this...' Kuen thought to himself, before he found said train of thought being interrupted.
She'd noticed him. And she was waving at him. And he was definitely sure that there wasn't anyone behind him. He waved back awkwardly, before breaking the silence.
"So... what brings you here?" Kuen then asked.
"Training, I guess? What brings you here of all places?"
"Just walking around. Figured I'd look around Beacon today, seeing as there's a lot weighing on my mind."
Entering the class, and closing the door behind him, he found himself intrigued by the design of her weapon; it was very ornate compared to his, that's for sure. Walking towards her, he offered a hand, his face red a little.
"Kuen Akegata. Call me Kuen."
"Pyrrha. Pyrrha Nikos."
"Weren't you the girl from the amphitheater earlier?"
"Well, I mean, all of the first year students had to be there."
"Right."
She shook his hand back, an almost instinctive smile forming on her face.
'Definitely Greek...' He noted to himself, as another wave of awkward silence washed over the two of them.
"So, you been doing combat motions for the past who knows how long?" Kuen asked in genuine confusion.
"You sound like you want to spar." The Spartan responded.
"Well, I mean, sure? You have a sword and I have gun, but I can figure something out."
"I mean, sure, why not, I'm definitely in the mood."
A weird answer, but who was he to judge. As Pyrrha readied her weapon, standing on the platform she was practicing on. Well, it was more like a stage than anything, to be honest. Kuen would also hop on the stage, pulling out his firearm, as he readied himself.
Well, what he assumed was a stance that a gunslinger would pull. Immediately, Kuen tried to figure out his first move, since he was pretty sure that Pyrrha was an expert from what he'd briefly seen earlier, and he was also pretty sure that he'd bleed if he even let the tip of her weapon pierce him.
"I know I might sound like a coward, but please go easy on me. I'm pretty sure if that sword even remotely pierces me, I'm bleeding to death." Kuen nervously warned.
"Wait, you sound like you've never activated your Aura?" Pyrrha asked, a heavy hint of confusion present in her tone.
"Aura?" Kuen retorted back, only having heard that word from passing-by conversations.
Pyrrha could only sigh, before she smiled softly, stating firmly. "Right. I'll explain what Aura is, then."
(OST: EP 6 Score – The Emerald Forest, Pt. 1)
The two would find somewhere to seat, as Pyrrha would begin her explanation.
"Aura is the manifestation of our soul. It bears our burdens, and shields our hearts. Have you ever felt you were being watched without knowing that someone was there?"
"A lot." Kuen answered instinctively. "I would have said spirits in the past, but..."
"Regardless, with practice, our Aura can be our shield. Everyone has it, even animals." Pyrrha said, a soft chuckle escaping her lips hearing Kuen's response.
"Like... life force?"
"From the way you phrase it, something like that."
"Oh." Kuen muttered, piecing the thoughts together in his head.
As the Spartan would instruct Kuen to stand up, the latter would do so, as she would do the same.
"Now, close your eyes and concentrate." Pyrrha asked gently.
Confused, Kuen decided to comply, closing his eyes, a soft 'Okay.' leaving his mouth. And Pyrrha softly smiled, closing her own eyes, as she walked up to Kuen, holding the side of his head, much to his own bewilderment.
This was weird.
Pyrrha would softly open her eyes, her skin beginning to glow and her irises beginning to shrink, before shutting her eyes once more.
And as the glow from Pyrrha's body changed from white to a faint red, Kuen began glowing a bright red, as Pyrrha began to recite words she'd remembered from her time back in Sanctum Academy.
'For it is in passing that we achieve immortality. Through this, we become a paragon of virtue and glory to raise above all, infinite in distance and unbound by death.'
And as she placed a hand on his chest, she continued, 'I release your soul, and by my shoulder protect thee.'
And at that moment, she stopped glowing, and almost fell over from what looked like exhaustion, as Kuen managed to catch her in time, the glow around his body acting up, almost like a never-ending flame disrupted by the winds.
"Pyrrha? You alright? You need me to get you to the nurse or something?" Kuen asked worriedly.
"It's all right. I used my Aura to unlock yours, but the energy that protects you now is your own." She responded, grinning a little.
"What is it? You say that, but it feels like it's not something you're used to..."
"You have a surprising amount. It's rare that I see such a bright glow..."
"Woah..." Kuen was almost filled with glee, visibly struggling to contain said glee, much to Pyrrha's own amusement.
(OST: EP 3 Score – The Shining Beacon, Pt. 2)
"You look like you're new to all this. You've never heard of Aura, somehow... what's up with that?" Pyrrha asked gently.
Kuen was almost hesitant to ask. Should he reveal the truth? Should he lie all the way? Or should he mix both into something more sensical? Maybe the latter was the best option for him.
"Admittedly... Ozpin was the one who helped me get in here. Mainly because I instinctively protected him by accident a few days ago." Kuen sheepishly admitted, rubbing the back of his head.
"So you're the one the news was talking about for a while..."
"Wait, I was in the news? I've been checking the papers every day, but I've somehow never found an article about me? Mostly other things..."
"You'll figure it out." Pyrrha chuckled.
And Kuen chuckled almost instinctively. Indeed, laughter was contagious. And Kuen checked the time, almost panicking. It was already six in the evening.
"Eh, you'll figure it out too. I think I saw you staring at Jaune in the distance when I came into the hall earlier." Kuen quipped, having barely noticed it but thought it was a thing worth bringing up, thinking about it.
"How'd you even kno- we're even." Pyrrha stated monotonously, the two chuckling some more in response.
Kuen knew that this would add to that whole 'Beacon Academy was going to be interesting' thought process in his head.
(ED1: I May Fall)
There's a day when all hearts will be broken,
When a shadow will cast out the light,
And our eyes cry a million tears,
Help won't arrive!
There's a day when all courage collapses,
And our friends turn and leave us behind,
Creatures of darkness will triumph,
The sun won't rise!
When we've lost all hope!
And succumb to fear!
As the skies rain blood!
And the end draws near!
I may fall!
But not like this – it won't be by your hand!
I may fall!
Not this place, not today!
I may fall!
Bring it all – it's not enough to take me down!
I may fall!
