Day 4: Nightmares

"You really think that I can watch you getting everything you want as you lead your charmed life.'

Adrian circled me. I took a step back and then noticed that he wasn't alone. I turned around and was face-to-face with Jill. Poor Jill. I came into her life and completely turned everything upside down.

"How could you be so selfish, Rose? How could you tear apart the only family I've ever had? And for what? For you to be in the clear?" Jill's words cut through me Iike ice. "You of all people should know what it's like to not have a family and you destined me to it." Jill's emerald eyes shone with tears.

"Jill-" I said as I reached for her. I felt the need to try to comfort her, protect her. In a split second, she disappeared and manifested into Mason. Another innocent life I ruined. "Mason." I breathed. It was never any easier the times I saw Mason. His pale white hand reached out for me. "You belong with us." I looked beyond him and saw the ghostly silhouette of Victor. "Murderer!" he screamed. I turned and started to run. I needed out. Just as I made it to the doorway, Lissa's slender figure appeared blocking my escape. Her platinum hair was elegantly twisted atop her head securing her white and yellow gold and emerald tiara in place. Her emerald eyes pierced me. "You destined me to this life," she motioned to her crown. "I should have let you die."

I gasped. I had to close my eyes from the pain I was experiencing. It felt as if I had been shot. Wait. I had. I opened my eyes and was face-to-face with Tasha standing over me with Dimitri by her side. "It's a shame. You could have been a great guardian if you knew your place." Tasha sneered. My breathing was rapid now. I felt the blood pooling beside me. "Why?" I whispered. Dimitri spoke up this time instead. "You weren't enough." If I thought the gunshot hurt, nothing prepared me for the pain I felt then. I screamed and thrashed. I screamed until I felt the last bit of power slipping from me.

"Roza."

"Roza."

"Roza!"

I woke started and disoriented. My breathing was rapid and the pain in my chest was almost unbearable.

"Roza. Breathe." Dimitri's face was in front of mine now. "Breathe in and out." His voice repeated gently trying to coax me into relaxation. It took a while, but I was finally able to breathe slowly. Dimitri started rubbing circles on my wrists he held with his thumbs. Dimitri noticed the change in my breathing. "Do you want to talk about it?" I sighed as I curled into his side. "Do you think I ruin everyone I touch?" I whispered, moving my face to bury into him.

Dimitri ran a hand down my back. "No. Roza. Everyone makes their own choices. You've just made the best ones you could have in the moment."
