Day 5: "Let Me See"

I laid in the comfort of the plush mattress in Lissa's quarters. I was still healing from being shot and Lissa and Dimitri didn't like to leave my side for too long. I think seeing me that close to death... again... was difficult for both of them. I loved spending time with them, but I was starting to feel like I was losing my mind staring at these same four walls.

My mind wandered to Adrian. The last time I saw him, he was shattered... hurt... devastated. He screamed that I had ruined the lives of everyone I touched. That hurt deeply. I felt like I had gave him a chance, but it wasn't for the right reasons. I loved him in my own way, but it paled to the love I felt for Dimitri.

I was lost in my thoughts when I heard the door handle turn. The light was off, but I could make out Dimitri's tall form. He dropped his keys on the dresser and shrugged off his duster. I could tell that he was trying to be quiet, maybe thinking I was resting. He leaned down to tug off his boots before lining them up neatly beside the door. He moved to go toward the bathroom.

"Hey." I whispered, my voice slightly hoarse from my throat being dry.

"Hey, Roza."

"How was your shift? How's Christian doing?"

Dimitri was facing the closet digging for a clean towel. "Uneventful really. Christian's doing as expected. Coping."

I sighed. I knew Christian was hurting after his aunt's betrayal. I hadn't had much contact with him since then. "Right." I shifted in the bed, leaning against the back of the headboard. "Come here. I've missed you." I stated, patting the bed beside me. Dimitri continued busying himself with his back to me. "Dimitri? What's wrong?"

"Nothing, Roza."

I huffed. I wished I could easily get out of this bed. "It's not nothing. What. Is. It?"

"Just drop it, Roza."

I tossed one of my many pillows in his direction. It collided with his back.

"If it's nothing, then why won't you look at me? Let me see your face!"

Dimitri finally turned around and slowly walked to the bed. In this lighting my dhampir eyes had adjusted and I could make out a shadow across his face. "What happened?"

Dimitri sighed. "Just paying for a consequence."

"A consequence?"

"I told you that I have done a lot of bad things in my life, that taking another man's girlfriend was a line I wouldn't cross." Dimitri reached for my hand. "But I did."

I stared at Dimitri in shock. "Adrian did this!" I screeched. My hand went to Dimitri's face, turning it to see the full extent of his injury. The bruise was already forming. He was going to have a wicked black eye. "I'm sorry," I whispered.

Dimitri moved to wrap his arm around me. "It's not your fault. Besides, you're worth anything I have to go through for your love."
