Tattoo You
Angie blinked up at the person in front of her at Kamekona's truck while she waited hand in hand with her daddy.
"I like you' tattoos, they's very pretty."
The man turned and grinned at the smiling little girl and her father. "Pretty isn't one I've heard before, keiki, but thank you."
He was an inch or two taller than Steve with a muscular build. His arms held sleeves composed of symbols and animals, most prominently a tiger on one arm and a wolf on the other.
"You welcome. I want a goat," she announced and he chuckled.
"Goats are cool. My tutu had goats when I was a kid."
"I got a goat, he lives with his mommy and daddy at the zoo. Uncle Danno got me him. His name is Felix, right, Daddy?"
"Right," Steve smirked. "We're a little goat obsessed."
"I want a goat for my tattoo," Angie clarified. "Right here." She pointed to her bicep.
"Ahh, you may need to wait a few years," the man chuckled and offered his hand to Steve. "Makanui. Nice to meet you, Commander and …?" He'd recognized the task force commander from the news.
"My name's Angie. Daddy has very pretty colors on his tattoos."
Makanui glanced at the parts of Steve's tattoos visible beneath his tshirt sleeves.
"I bet that's why you want one, hmm?" He asked as his turn came and he said, "Two lemons and a rainbow," to Flippa.
"Daddy's are pretty but I'm getting a goat." Angie confirmed and her new friend chuckled before wishing her luck and saying goodbye.
Steve lifted her to greet Flippa and Kamekona with a headshake and kissed her cheek. "One track mind."
Kamekona laughed. "At least you know the little kahuna comes by it honestly, brah."

"It honors my ancestors," the twenty-something girl told Angie, who was paying rapt attention as she sat on Catherine's lap waiting at the nail salon. "The Turtle, or Honu, stands for good luck, endurance and long life."
"I love turtles!"
The young woman named Kaena smiled at the four year old. "A turtle is my Aumakua. He watches out for me."
"Cammie watches out for me and DJ, he's my brudder."
"Is Cammie your dog?"
Angie nodded. "She's the best dog." Her face turned thoughtful, then she smiled and looked back at her mother. "But I want a goat tattoo."
Kaena chuckled. "That's adorable," she said as Angie hopped down for a better look at the green sea turtle on her foot.
"I like you' turtle. You should get green polish like him's shell."
"You know what?" She smiled at Catherine as the manicurist motioned her towards the pedicure station. "I think I will."

"You know," DJ's friend Michael said as Angie munched a cookie. "You gotta be a grown up first." He turned to Steve and Catherine who were seated across the deck tables as the three kids had a snack before Michael's mom picked him up. "Right?"
"I'm almost five." Angie reminded him with a grin. "After DJ's birthday it's me and Uncle Danno's birthday and then I'm five."
"Five's pretty big." He smiled back at her. "But I meant a grown up, grown up, like your cousin Grace."
Steve shook his head. "When did Gracie become an example of a grown up?" He asked Catherine, who was smiling softly at his expression.
"Michael's right, baby girl, you need to be a grown up for a real tattoo, remember you and Daddy and I talked about it?"
"Grown ups get big tattoos," she reasoned. "I just want one little goat." She looked at Catherine with serious eyes. "For now."
Michael turned to Steve. "My mom said they hurt and she's just got a little one. Did yours hurt a lot?"
DJ looked concerned and Catherine reached across the table to pat his hand as Steve said, "They do hurt, which is why we wait until we're adults."
"I don't want you to do anything that hurts," DJ told his sister. "Maybe if you want, we can get one together when you're eighteen. If I want one. I'm not sure yet. But if I do, I'll wait til you're old enough."
Catherine whispered, "Thanks for that, sweetheart, but don't worry, she's not getting any tattoos anytime soon." And the eight year old gave her a smile.
"They make the colors with the special markers and they go inside you skin," Angie explained.
"They make 'em with needles," DJ told her and Michael gave a little shudder and added, "Lots of needles. I saw it on TV."
"Then you get a lollipop!" Angie added before giggling when Cammie brought over a ball and dropped it in her littlest human's lap. "Cammie wants to catch. Can we, Mommy?"
"Stay right here on the lawn, Michael's mom will be here in fifteen minutes," Catherine told them as all three kids hopped up and followed the dog off the deck.
"Maybe we revisit the needles?" Steve mused as they watched Angie toss the ball and Cammie retrieve it.
"Don't think it's going to matter. Brave through and through," she smiled and patted his chest.
Kissing her temple with a smile, he nodded. "We've got a few months to come up with a distract and redirect plan, Lieutenant. We're definitely gonna need one."

Later that evening after story time, a sleepy Angie ran a little finger over Steve's bicep, tracing part of the image showing beneath his sleeve as he pulled the light blanket over her.
"You should have gotted a goat, Daddy," she mused, causing Catherine to stifle a laugh as she kissed her good night.
"I didn't know I'd have I'd have a goat loving daughter." Steve smoothed her hair back and kissed her forehead. "You go to sleep and have good dreams."
"I'll dream about a goat tattoo," Angie sighed as her eyes fluttered closed and both parents chuckled.
"You know," Steve teased as he wrapped an arm around Catherine's waist when they stepped into the hallway. "I'd add a goat if I thought it would change her mind about getting one herself."
"Ha, easier said than done, but …" she smiled and leaned up to kiss him. "Let me grab my phone. I think I have an idea."
