== THE FIRST HOUSES ==
As years passed, the school began to grow in numbers. Those who were personally taught by Pahili remained as fellow professors once their own training in the magical arts were finished. Unlike Hogwarts however, Hale Ho'okalakupua added two other magical arts to their cirriculum; that of oceania (or how to manipulate the ocean to bend to their will, as well as how to care for the creatures living within) and volcanology (the study of lava and how to summon its powers and manipulate them as one's own). Pahili discovered and perfected the magicks of Oceania while his new wife and fellow founder Ke'ala perfected the art of volcanology, driving out the kiapolo that once called the ancient volcano of Pu'u Moaulanui as their home. It was unknown where they took up residence next, however they still maintained a presence on the island of Kaho'olawe.
"Hogwarts sorted their students into Houses," Pahili remarked one day as the day's studies came to a close. He required a short meeting of his fellow professors at the end of each day to discuss matters pertaining to the school. "I believe we should have different approach to how our students are sorted."
"How did the sorting work, love?" Ke'ala asked her husband.
"Well, it involved a Sorting Hat who sorted students into one of the four Houses depending on their personal traits and qualities," Pahili explained.
"I see. What do you have in mind, Headmaster?" another of the young professors inquired. Pahili rubbed his chin in thought.
"I think we should base our Houses in accordance with the two new forms of magic that we have at our disposal, represented by two of the most well-known symbols found in each; the shark and the dragon," Pahili mused aloud.
"So... we're only having two instead of four?" Ke'ala asked, seeking clarification.
"No. Actually, I think we should have four; one for each element. Mano, pueo, menehune and the kiapolo," Pahili suggested. His words were met with silence as everyone present considered his ideas.
"So... shark, owl, pixie, dragon?" his wife reiterated. Pahili nodded.
"Their selected house will be decided in a similar fashion as the Goblet of Fire was used to decided the champions of the Triwizard Tournament in the past," Pahili replied. "An ipu made of koa wood will be placed into our entrance hall where all new arrivals will place their names into. The flame of our Ipu Kilokilo shall decide the fate of each new applicant."
"How?" another professor inquired. Her question was answered a few days later.
