"The girl," she spoke quietly, a subtle, bitter edge to her tone that he surely must have imagined, her voice growing louder with question. "Who was she?"
He remained silent for a few moments, as he watched the flames blend together seamlessly. Taking a deep breathe, his eyes snapped to hers abruptly, finding her tanned face frowning at him.
"You," he whispered.
Her frown deepened as she leaned back, shocked at the revelation while he realised that she had subconsciously leaned towards him. He had recounted the whole tale to her, including the dreams. She had found him and his mother, and she had helped them. In the process, she had put trust in them, not entirely but the gesture of helping them was enough.
When she had seen his lightsaber at his belt, he had learned that she was enraptured with the war his parents and his uncle had fought in, intrigued by the Jedi way that they had studied.
She had allowed them time to grieve, something she related to since she had been orphaned as a young child. She helped him get through the angry stage by sparring with him, her staff against his lightsaber, avoiding direct contact so that he didn't break it.
They had only been there for three weeks, content to let things settle down since there was clearly a target on their backs, so being on a junkyard planet like Jakku was helpful for their situation.
Having revealed his whole story to her, she now remained in shock before suddenly standing up and stalking away without a word.
"It's a lot to take in," his mother spoke from his right side.
She was right.
He liked to think that in the short, intense time they had known one another that him and Rey were at least friends. In the hard times that had befallen them, it was difficult to trust, but he hoped at least that part of her had some trust in him.
"I don't know what to say," Rey whispered as they lay beneath the stars, the fire still burning between them, his mother asleep. "I've been alone for so long, it feels weird to have someone here."
"I know what it is to be alone," Kylo admitted. "Except I was surrounded by people and I pushed them away."
"Why?" She questioned softly.
"The truth hurts, especially when its kept secret from you."
"What's your truth?"
Kylo considered for a moment before sighing.
"Darth Vader is my grandfather," Kylo paused for a moment and when she remained silent he continued. "And my family were afraid that I would turn out just like him. A monster."
"Everyone has a monster inside of them," Rey spoke. "We are all capable of doing horrible things, but its your actions that will make you who you become, not your family tree."
He rolled over to face her, finding her already looking at him, the flames glowing across both of their features.
"I never knew my parents," She spoke. "I lost them before I can remember, but I like to make up different stories about who they could've been."
"If you could do anything, what would you do?"
She looked at him in amusement then, more comfortable than he had ever seen her.
"Hmm," She wondered, before laughing for the first time around him. "I have no idea."
When she turned back to him, she was surprised to find the look of awe on his face as he stared at her intently.
"What about you?" She questioned, shifting her eyes away as a flush spread across her cheeks and neck.
"Maybe a pilot," Kylo admitted. "I've always loved flying, it makes me feel free."
"And yet you crashed your ship when you got here," She teased.
"I ran out of fuel and had no choice," Kylo replied, moving his eyes away as his amused smile turned sad.
Her smile sobered as she reached out and grasped his hand.
Surprised, he looked back into her eyes, both of them relaxing.
After a few moments, his mother mumbled in her sleep, both of them startling apart. He hadn't realised that they had started drifting towards one another.
"Ben…" His mother mumbled in her sleep again. "Ben."
"Who's Ben?" Rey questioned, curiously. "She keeps saying that name."
"It's my name," Kylo admitted. "My birth name."
She frowned, searching his eyes to figure something out.
"I was afraid of becoming a monster, so I tried to be someone else," Kylo admitted.
"Ben…" Rey whispered, testing the name out before smiling. "I prefer Ben."
He had only known her a short time but hearing her whisper his name made the idea of Kylo disappear as though it had been thrown into the flames beside them.
Ben had started following Rey as she travelled across the dunes and scavenged anything she could find, while his mother stayed at the outpost and helped out anyway she could. There was potentially still a target on their backs, so they needed to keep their heads down, and Jakku made that easy.
Ben held back as she took in her finds, coming back towards him with her ration portions.
"What's the profit today, boss?" He teased, his playful side that only she could she could cause coming out.
She fanned them at him as she sauntered over before laughing.
They were walking back towards the area where he expected to find his mother when something caught his eye.
Looking over to the shipyard, he stopped in his tracks as his caught sight of the Falcon.
His father's ship.
"What's wrong?" Rey questioned, frowning up at him before following his line of sight. "More garbage for the shipyard."
"That's my father's ship," He informed her, making her wince. "We need to find my mother."
"I meant vintage," Rey corrected, blushing. He almost smiled but he caught sight of his mother surrounded by a group of men.
The group of men.
When they grabbed her arm that was the last straw, instinctively he pulled his lightsaber from his belt and activated it. He hadn't touched it in weeks, but the weight of it felt comforting. Holding his saber brought back memories of training with Chewie which multiplied his anger even more.
"Let her go," he growled, Rey pulling her staff free and taking an offensive stance. That's when he realised that they definitely did trust each other, she backed him without even asking who they were and he trusted her to have his back.
His mother took advantage of the distraction, punching the man holding her arm with her free hand.
Ben handled the men on the right and Rey handled those on the left.
They pulled out their guns and Ben used his saber to deflect as they fired, one shot managed to hit one of the men but the other one dodged. As the man rolled out of the way, Ben took advantage of the pathway and went straight to his mother who had taken one of their guns. Content with her armed and behind him, Ben turned towards Rey who was handling the other men perfectly well on her own. As they fell to the ground, she turned towards him and Ben couldn't voice how beautiful and powerful she looked in that moment.
At some shouts in the distance, they all looked to see more men coming towards them. Clearly, the gang they had seen that night weren't the only ones chasing the target on the house of Skywalker.
Grabbing his mother's hand, he sprinted for the Falcon, knowing that Rey would be right behind them. His mother's steps faltered as the ship came into view, but Ben carried on running, pulling her along with him.
They climbed into the ship like it was second nature, Ben heading straight for the cockpit and began starting the ship, lifting the ramp so that the gang could not get on board.
His mother wasn't much of a flyer, but she headed straight for the gun.
Rey, on the other hand, climbed into the co-pilot seat. He was about to ask her if she knew how to fly, but as she began pressing buttons he knew immediately that she did. She stripped these ships apart, she would know how to put it all back together and what everything does.
As his mother began shooting from the gunner position, he knew they didn't have a lot of time left, some offensive shots ringing off of the hull of the ship. Beginning to take off, they heard more shots ring off of the hull. Quickly, Ben flew them away from the planet surface and through the atmosphere, activating lightspeed as soon as he could.
"The beacon on Luke's starfighter ends in this system," Leia spoke as she pointed across the holotable.
"There is only one planet in that system," Ben zoomed in and noted. "Ahch-To."
Ben went to the cockpit and altered their course and left the ship on autopilot.
When he came back in, his mother's shoulders relaxed, comforted by the realisation that she would be reunited with her brother soon. Shifting his gaze to Rey, he noticed that she was still in awe of the holotable, having never seen one before. He would definitely need to show her Dejarik later.
"If you'll excuse me, I'm going to try to get some sleep," his mother spoke, standing up. Saying goodnight, both Rey and Ben watched her leave, but he noticed his mother give him a knowing smile as she passed him.
Feeling a flush grace his neck, Ben flexed his hands before moving back to the holotable, avoiding Rey's eyes as he sat down in the same spot before. He only noticed once he sat down that he had positioned himself closer to her than before.
"Are you going to be happy to see him?" Rey questioned, remembering what his uncle had done from when he told her his story.
"I don't know," Ben admitted. "But I know I will at least be grateful that he is alive."
Feeling her gaze on him, he turned slumped back in the seat and turned his head towards her. As their eyes met, she turned on her side and faced him, making him smile softly.
He opened his mouth to say something, anything, but as soon as he tried to he found that he couldn't. He didn't want to disturb the peace that settled over them as they gazed at one another.
They had known each other for such a short time, but from the very first vision of her in his dreams, he had been captivated. Even more so since he had met her and come to know her.
He liked to imagine that the Force had shown him the dreams on purpose, that he was meant to find her.
She breathed in deeply before him and exhaled sharply, her gaze shifting across his face, before following his scar.
He winced as she followed it to the neckline of his robes, the contortion of his features caught her attention and making her frown.
"It's beautiful," She whispered softly, reaching out follow it with her fingertip. Her touch made him flinch but he allowed her to touch it, as she noticed a scarlet flush covering his skin which made her smile. "Scars make us who we are, and each one has a story."
As her fingertip reached his robes, he sharply grabbed her hand, making her freeze in place. His grip quickly softened, choosing to hold her hand, stroking the back of it with his thumb. He focused on it before lifting his eyes back to her.
They both shifted closer to one another, as his eyes shifted over her face before flickering down to her mouth. As her mouth parted, Ben couldn't take his eyes away from it, rushing forward and capturing her lips.
It started slowly, both of them unsure, before they pulled apart and laughed softly. As Ben smiled toothily, he looked happier than Rey had ever seen him, urging her to lean forward and kiss him once more. Cradling her neck, Ben kissed her more passionately, her hand coming up to caress his cheek.
Pulling apart for breath, they leaned their foreheads together, before devolving into laughter once more.
As it turns out, Rey is a quick learner.
She beat him at Dejarik.
As they entered the planet's atmosphere, Ben heard Rey gasp from the copilot seat. After living on a dessert planet for as long as she could remember, the vast blue ocean of Ahch-To made her eager to dive straight in, despite the fact that she would not know how to swim.
The white froth of the waves below the ship lined the navy blue mass of the waters, parting with the momentum of the ship as they carefully guided themselves closer to the surface of the waters.
Soon they spotted a green mass in the distance, emerging across the horizon as they sped closer. Ben felt the sudden urge to look at Rey, shifting his eyes to her only to find tears running down her face.
"What's wrong?" Ben questioned, unable to reach out to her as his hands were on the controls.
"I never knew there could be this much green and water in the universe," She admitted, her voice quiet.
With Rey's eyes still fixed on the island, his eyes flickered to his mother in the passenger seat behind, sharing a soft look of sympathy with her.
Finding an rocky outcrop, they spotted Luke's starfighter. As the white froth of the waves lapped the edges, occasionally spraying the surface, they landed the ship. Geared up physically but anxious emotionally, they began their journey from the rocky shore to the grassy plains, scrambling over the hills until a village of huts came into view.
The pair let Leia take the lead as she determinedly led them through the village, past the inhabitants, following her familial bond with her brother, strengthened by being twins.
When they reached the hut she was looking for, both Rey and Ben's steps faltered, the former reaching out to take the others hand as a show of support. Leia, however, didn't stop, swinging the door open and storming in.
Ducking through the doorway, Rey in tow, Ben saw his uncle dressed in tattered robes, stubble covering his jaw. He looked at them in shock, before releasing a shuddering breath of relief, tears beginning to well in his eyes. Leia shot forward and grasped him in a tight embrace, one he returned gratefully.
His eyes locked with Ben's over Leia's shoulder, the pair sharing a nod, the scars of their last encounter throbbing painfully.
"Who did this?" Leia questioned once they had settled down, a small fire crackling between them, a chimney in the roof of the hut allowing the smoke to escape.
How Leia knew that Luke had an answer, Ben surmised was due to their sibling force bond.
"Snoke," Luke growled, staring intensely into the flames between them.
"No," Leia whispered in shock, while Ben sat upright.
He had heard more about Snoke than he had seen him. The man was lanky and lacking in hair, with a sickly, grey colour to his skin, a large scar marring the side of his face. While Ben's was a simple line, Snoke's etched and deepened.
Ben had met him in person on a few occasions, when he was younger and still travelled with his father. His piercing, almost lifeless eyes had pierced through him as a lad, something unsettling about him that made Ben wary. Although Han laughed this off when they were conducting business. Their contact had only been occasional then, but Ben knew that in more recent years that they had become business partner's of sorts.
Snoke had become a family friend.
If Snoke had organised the attack on his father, it would only be for two reasons; money or to prevent him from revealing a particular secret.
He would, however, have only organised the attack on the rest of the Skywalker family for one reason: to remove witnesses that could find out the truth.
Ben stormed across the grassy hills of Ahch-To, Rey struggling to keep up with him as he clenched his fists. His initial shock had ebbed away to allow his anger to rise to the surface, his need to avenge his father.
"Ben, wait!"
He suddenly stopped, Rey nearly colliding with his back.
He felt it before he heard it. An ominous weight crawled through the force towards him, spreading over his skin like a lifeless chill. The echoes followed, carried towards him on the chill breeze.
Frowning, he turned towards Rey expecting her to question him, only to find her stare fixed to the very location he sensed.
"You feel it too?" Ben questioned, his frown deepening when she gave him a single, sharp nod without shifting her gaze.
As she took a step forward, Ben stepped in front of her, halting her in her tracks. Attempting to move around him, her gaze still fixed, Ben grabbed her arm and pulled her away back to the village. She argued and tried to pull away, but Ben held strong.
He had felt darkness before, had felt it flow through his own body, yet whatever sinister presence existed behind them still ignited fear in him. It made the hairs on his arms stand up and goosebumps to cover his skin.
The closer they got to the village, the less Rey resisted. The distance from the darkness allowing her mind to clear.
Once they reached the village, Ben released her but carried on striding to the hut, while Rey trailed behind him, quietly.
"Mother," Ben greeted, his tone serious. "Luke."
Leia took one look at him before she stood up from the bench, waiting patiently for whatever he needed to say.
"She's force sensitive," Ben revealed, seeing Rey's gaze snap to him from his peripheral vision.
She gazed at him for a moment longer, his demeanour all she needed to validate his words. Shifting her eyes to Rey, her features softened before leading the wary, young woman from the hut.
As Leia explained what Ben had meant, Rey focused on her hands wringing in her lap. She had been unwanted and nothing her entire life. Hearing that she had this magical power arising inside her was like someone giving her a pitcher of water on Jakku. Something so unlikely that it was rarer than rarer.
When Leia's approach didn't work, Luke took her place and led her up the highest hill. They walked out onto an outcrop of rock, the sun beginning to set on the horizon, making the entire sky incandescent.
Rey sighed before turning back to Luke, sitting down as he instructed.
Following his process, Rey closed her eyes, her hands placed either side of her. Her contempt weighed her down, preventing her from fully committing for many attempts at trying to feel the force.
"Are you still scared of him?" Rey questioned, opening her eyes to look at him.
"Try again," he urged, his patience growing thinner, as his frustration began to show.
She refused, asking her question once more.
Stubborn met stubborn, something Luke soon realised as they stared at one another, his gaze shifting away first.
He breathed in deeply before sighing so harshly that his shoulders visibly moved.
"No," He admitted, shame lacing his tone. "I was wrong to fear that he would have let the darkness overcome him. I should have guided him. Instead I allowed his anger and loneliness to be his only company, as I allowed him to shut himself away. I never should have let him run away that day, just as I never should have run away myself."
He met her eyes again.
"We are the only ones who get to decide our fate," He concluded. "Neither me or Leia succumbed to the darkness, and Ben inherited our strength. I have to trust that he will always do what is right. He is my nephew, and that will never change."
They stared at one another for a moment before the sound of boots approached.
Looking up, they saw Ben standing at the entrance to the outcrop, his features soft as he looked from Rey to Luke.
"And you will always be my uncle," Ben confessed.
The men shared a small smile, before Ben focused his gaze back on Rey.
"Allow me?" Ben propositioned, only moving when Rey gave him a nod of approval, sitting in front of her on the rocky ground.
He circled both of her wrists and lay them flat on the rock beneath them once me, encouraging her to take a deep breath.
"Close your eyes."
After a few attempts, Rey felt something. A vibration in the air. She struggled to pursue it but as she did, it branched and altered until her entire existence gave way to a supernova of vibrations.
Overwhelmed, she took a shaky breath, Ben's words distant. His voice echoed through the vibrations, and once it reached her she attempted to analyse the vibrations around her and found that she could identify them.
Unbeknownst to her, as she did this she was unconsciously listing them off to Ben and Luke, whose eyebrows rose at how fast she had learned.
Opening her eyes, she met Ben's and whispered the last one on her list.
"You."
The silence swept through the air and wrapped around them, before being broken by Rey's gleeful laughter.
For someone who had been nothing, realising that she may have some worth at all in the world overjoyed her.
Luke watched as the biggest grin he had ever seen spread across his nephew's face, and couldn't stop his own smile from tugging at the corners of his mouth.
They continued to practice, even encouraging Rey to use her staff while feeling the sensation of the force around her, until she was exhausted.
By reconciling with his family, Ben had realised what he had lost by pushing them away for so long, by losing his father so brutally after having avoided him for years. The hollow of grief inside of him threatened to follow him whole, and Rey could see the pain consuming him as he lay staring at the stars above.
Therefore, she was unsurprised when she rolled over just as dawn began to break to find Ben gone, along with Luke's starfighter.
She was going to kill him herself when she got her hands on him, or so she thought. Turned out she would have to join the queue behind Leia and Luke. The former sitting behind her and the latter in the pilot seat next to her as they led the Millenium Falcon through the stars.
Despite the frustration overshadowing their journey, Rey admired Luke's flying, noticed that both him and Ben had inherited the same family gene that involved a passion for flying and a flawless approach to it.
They were headed directly for Snoke's ship, The Supremacy.
Ben had deactivated the tracking beacon on his ship, but not before they could see the general direction he was headed.
The Supremacy always stayed within the same system, Snoke's hub for his business, so knew they knew that was exactly where Ben was headed.
