Epilogue
It was in those moments, Lucy knew. Birds were singing outside her bedroom window and streaks of light seeped through the edges of the curtains, but all she focused on was Kate's content sighs. It was a Sunday morning, a day off for both of them, and they spent the weekend showing each other all the love and adoration they felt. Lucy gazed adoringly into her girlfriend's eyes as Kate held her close.
"Mornings like this are my favorite, no work, no rush, just you and me," admitted Lucy and Kate beamed with happiness.
"Waking up to you is my new favorite pastime. Well, one of them," admitted Kate with a sly grin as Lucy nodded and straddled her waist.
"I can think of some others," teased Lucy and Kate moaned as her girlfriend peppered kisses on her neck and shoulder. Kate had never been a fan of morning sex, but that was until Lucy came along. There was something about waking up to Lucy and feeling all the need and desire they had for one another. When they first started hooking up, both had a clear, unspoken understanding that leaving right after was best, but it didn't take long for long nights to turn into early mornings. After the first night Lucy stayed over and Kate woke up to Lucy's hand between her thighs and lips on her neck, she was hooked.
"I can't get enough of you, Luce," whispered Kate as their bodies moved together in the way that made her crave more. She moaned when Lucy slipped two fingers inside of her and whispered in her ear. Kate loved watching her like that, needy and hungry for more, and she was more than happy to oblige. Hours later, after a few more rounds and a shower that left both wondering if they would ever want to leave the house again, the couple finally managed to make their way over to Jane's for a late afternoon lunch. It had become a tradition for Jane to have everyone over at least once a month for a meal together. Lucy was amused at how surprised Kate was when Alex and Julie ran over to ask them if they were together again. She did her best to pretend like she didn't know why Jane's kids were so invested in their relationship all of a sudden. It was clear Kate was still oblivious to Alex's crush and how Julie used it to tease her brother. The couple was greeted by their friends and even teased about showing up together. While Kate wouldn't admit it, Lucy could tell how much it meant to her to be involved in the good-natured teasing. Kate and Lucy were never far from each other, either holding one another or holding hands as they conversed with the others. Lucy couldn't help but smile at the look of delight on Kate's face when Zeinab showed up just in time for the meal. The new FBI Special Agent thanked Jane for inviting her and Kate hugged the older woman in thanks before handing Zeinab a plate. Once Kate was sure her new colleague and friend was comfortably chatting with the others, she pulled Lucy into the house with an appreciative smile.
"Thank you for inviting her," she said as she gazed lovingly into her girlfriend's eyes.
"Tennant invited her. It's her house," reminded Lucy and Kate smiled even more.
"And we both know she wouldn't have if you didn't want her to." Lucy blushed and shrugged.
"I may have texted Tennant yesterday about it, but she was already thinking of the idea. I know Zeinab and I didn't get off on the right foot, but she is your friend and I want her to feel welcomed on the island."
"Well, Zeinab already likes you. You were the one who had reservations," teased Kate.
"She had my girl in danger and spoke Arabic to her, there were bound to be issues." Kate sighed dreamily.
"God I love being your girl," she giggled and Lucy grinned from ear to ear before tenderly kissing her.
"Come up for air, you two," called Jane from outside and Lucy giggled as Kate blushed. They laced their fingers together and headed back outside to the table as Kate playfully glared at her friend.
"We were just talking," assured Kate as she sat down beside Jane. Jane smirked.
"Is that what we're calling it these days," she teased back as Lucy sat down as well. Zeinab was sitting across from them and giggled.
"Oh good, we can tease her together. I knew I liked you," said Zeinab and Jane gave her a wink as Kate profusely shook her head.
"No, no, no, I get teased enough as it is," whined Kate and Lucy kissed her cheek.
"Don't worry, babe. I'll protect you," assured Lucy and Kate scoffed.
"You tease me too," she exclaimed and Lucy shrugged.
"Yeah, but when I do it, it's cute," she assured. Kate wanted to protest, but melted on the spot at the smile Lucy gave her. Zeinab looked over at Jesse, Kai, and Ernie.
"Are they always like this," asked Zeinab and Ernie smirked.
"Always," said Ernie. Jesse and Kai nodded in agreement.
"Even when they were broken up, the glances, the longing looks, it was nauseating," said Jesse and Kate laughed as Lucy threw a balled up napkin at him.
"Okay, that's enough," announced Lucy before Jesse could make another joke about the couple. Kai eyed them curiously.
"So this means you two are official, right? No more wondering if you are girlfriends or awkward questions about it," asked Kai. Lucy beamed with happiness at her girlfriend as Kate kissed her cheek.
"We are definitely girlfriends," assured Kate, but both were confused when Kai, Ernie, and Jesse all groaned. Jane smiled smugly and held out her hand.
"Pay up," said Jane and Lucy's jaw dropped.
"You bet on us? How much," asked Lucy and Jane winked at her.
"Just a friendly $20 pool of when you would finally make it official. I had more faith in you than the boys did," informed Jane.
"To be fair, you only had me beat by a week," reminded Ernie.
"What about y'all? Jesse, Kai, when did you think my love life would be complete again," asked Lucy with an arched eyebrow. Jesse and Kai glanced at each other and tried not to laugh.
"Well, I thought it would take a couple more weeks, but I'm happy I was wrong," said Kai.
"And Jesse," questioned Lucy as she playfully glared at the man who was like a big brother to her. Jesse smiled sheepishly.
"At least mid-summer," he confessed.
"Jesse," exclaimed Lucy.
"What? You are stubborn," he laughed.
"I can't believe all of you took bets on my misery," said Lucy, but Jane shook her head.
"To be clear, I bet on your love for each other…Jesse bet on your misery," corrected Jane as Lucy shook her head at them.
"Well, you should all be ashamed of yourselves," said Lucy. Her eyes caught the way Zeinab was smiling smugly at Kate and noticed her girlfriend staring a bit too intently at her food.
"Something you two need to share with the class," asked Lucy as Zeinab shook with mirth.
"Let's just say I have a very expensive bottle of scotch headed my way," said Zeinab and Lucy's jaw dropped.
"Kate Whistler, you too," exclaimed Lucy.
"In my defense, she made the bet and was playing off of my spiraling cycle of misery over you," defended Kate as she pushed her bottom lip out in a pout. Lucy melted on the spot and cupped her girlfriend's cheek.
"Aw, you were spiraling," she asked and Kate nodded.
"So much," assured Kate before tenderly kissing her. The sound of Jesse and Kai pretending to be nauseous and gagging made them both roll their eyes at their antics. Zeinab giggled.
"Oh I think I'm going to like it here. Any of you have some fun Kate stories? I am always looking for ones to share with our team," said Zeinab.
"Fun Kate, what's a fun Kate? Terrifying Whistler? I have plenty of those," assured Jesse and Kate began to playfully argue with him, Kai, and Ernie about her days with the DIA. Lucy smiled adoringly at her girlfriend and shook her head in amusement as Zeinab joined in to defend the purpose of the DIA. They were all laughing and having a lively debate, but all Lucy could think about was how amazing it felt to be there with the woman she loved.
