Chapter 10

Back in the ballroom, the kids were wondering what was going on. Dorothy had been having fun, but then she suddenly just took off.

"I wonder what happened?" said Bartleby.

"She looked a bit upset" said Billy concernedly.

Edward and Bethany walked up.

"Hey kids," said Bethany. "How are you liking the ball?"

"It's great lady Bethany," said Alice smiling. But then her smile dropped a bit. "What happened to Dorothy? She just left; it was so strange."

"She didn't look happy" added Sam.

Bethany just shrugged carelessly.

"Strange is the very word," agreed Edward. "Just a minute ago she was telling me how she always wanted to attend a ball and dance all night, and no she seems sad."

"What do you think of the dress I made for her to attend lady Bethany?" asked Alice excitedly.

"You made that?" exclaimed Bethany in surprise. She kept her feeling of disdain deep inside her. She now believed Alice was part of trying to set the prince up with Dorothy.

"Yes," said Alice. "She told me about how she wanted to attend the ball, so I went back to the sewing room and worked on a dress I designed in my sketchbook."

"You do have a talent for designing," said Bethany in an impressed tone. "I'm thinking about choosing your dress for the wedding."

Alice beamed excitedly; her friends felt happy for her too.

Later that night, Alyvia and Bethany were riding in a limo on the way back to Hillson mansion, a mansion north of Dove's Isle where they lived.

Bethany sat in the car miserably.

"He looks like he's in love with her mom" she complained.

"Love?" scoffed Alyvia. "I certainly didn't love your father when I married him. I was born to a noble family; I married your father because he was a count. You have more nobility than a servant."

"What if he decides to call off our engagement and marry her?" asked Bethany.

"Tomorrow is the day you choose the wedding dress," said Alyvia. "He won't have time to call off the engagement."

"I bet those kids are involved with that maid," said Bethany. "Alice made her that dress she attended the ball in. she's helping her steal the prince away for me."

"Don't worry Bethany," said Alyvia. "I'll show that servant that only aristocrats marry princes."

Dorothy ran back to her room, Lady Rose perked her head up, she was surprised to see her owner return to the room so soon.

"Oh Lady Rose," she sighed picking up her cat. "It was a mistake to go down to the ball. The prince belongs with lady Bethany, she's a grand lady, I'm a servant. Princes don't go for them."

She looked outside the window up at the night sky sadly.

Just then there was a knock on the door.
