Chapter One
Leah POV
It's a quarter til 5. I made my way to my bedroom through the cozy two bedroom apartment. I settle with some faded shorts and an oversized band shirt. Retied my messy bun so I don't look like a total hot mess. I slip on some old vans and lock the door behind me. The crumble of dirt and gravel hit my feet as I head toward the reservation's rec center to our monthly meeting. As Jacob's Beta it is mandatory for me to attend.
For the past year a lot has changed. Jacob and Sam continue to operate separate packs. In the beginning you can say there were a lot of unnecessary arguments. Inevitably mainly due to simple miscommunication and a whole lot of alpha ego. Eventually the council had to step in and request a monthly meeting with an update from both packs to handle disputes. As of the agreement, Jacob handles half of the rez closest to Cullens as Sam patrols the other. For the most part everyone kept to themselves and their packs . The only time I see the other members of Sam's pack is at these meetings. That is if they decide to show.
As time passed, the vampire activity slowed. Things were starting to settle. Jacob decided to proceed onward with opening the auto shop. Obviously employing Embry, Quil, and Seth by keeping them busy until they figure out their next steps. As for the others, Rachel informed me Paul, Jared and Sam were partaking in establishing a bar. She is the only one I keep in contact due to our long friendship. Kim, I see occasionally at college. A simple hi suffice As for Emily I haven't seen her since our last run in at the grocery store. I can say it was civil, but her forced attempt made it awkward. That was about a month ago.
The building comes into view. "Lee!" I turn around and see Jake jog toward me. "Hey. Ready?" Jake asks, trying to catch his breath. "Yup." I state popping the p. Jacob starts talking about the shop and the car he is currently working on. I nod and hmm a "yeah" occasionally. We step onto the concrete of the parking lot. All the council members enter the rec bypassing Sam sitting on the entrance steps concentrating on the paperwork in hand.
"How are your exams going?" "Good. I guess? Just stressing like always." I state with a shrug. "Well let me know if you need more time to study so one of the guys or myself can cover a shift or two." I keep my head low as we approach the steps. "Nah. I'm good. I'll rather use those favors when I really need it." I wink back at Jake referring to the past couple of times I've called. "Right." responding with a smile and head shake.
"Hey Leah." I look up toward the man before me. Our eyes make contact. Stopping mid step trying not to make it obvious as I check him up and down.
"Hey." I responded softly, trying not to expose a smile. I proceed on moving forward opening the doors to the rec center for Jake to follow behind. The council is already in a circle formation with chairs and tables. I slide onto the top of a nearby table. Jakes leans against the same table beside me.
Sam's POV
Although your eyes may be focused on your shoes I know your attention is on the conversation being discussed compared to what I can say for myself.
This is really the only time I get to see you. I can't help but catch glimpses. You have always been a sight, even in your nonchalant outfits. Noticeably you're letting your hair grow out to where you are able to pull up, leaving a few strands to frame your face. Your features have softened extracting a natural glow. Those long smooth legs still uphold definition from continuing to phase. Rachel has let out a few facts about your whereabouts lately.
To be honest my heart started to skip a bit at the mention of your name.
**A Week Later**
Emily and I sit across from one another. I wait for her to sign the document. She sighs and slides the paper and pen across the dining table. As expected I sign on the line above my printed name. I handed the documents to the realtor at the other end of the table. "Okay everything is done. I'll keep you updated on buyers." She stands and heads to the front door followed by Emily. A simple goodbye and closes the door after her.
I grab a glass and start to pour the whisky. With every sip I take in the sensory from the open glass back door. Of course it's raining, but there is a crisp in the air that sends a tingle down my spine. A sense of relief. Her footsteps become louder with every step. She placed an object on the glass dining table behind me. "We're doing the right thing," she states and heads on upstairs. The bedroom door shuts sending echos through the house. I grab the engagement ring and place it in my jeans pocket.
A short glimpse of what has been on my mind. Trying to make this a short story. Still plan on continuing At Last. Please review. :)
