Valentine's Baby
"This is so lovely." Kara said as Danny helped her sit down at the table. She felt like a whale and at nearly 9 months pregnant she was ready to have this baby and have her internal organs return to their normal position. But the Baby apparently decided he or she was not ready according to her obstetrician. It was frustrating as Kara was ready, everything was ready. If she could serve an eviction notice to her uterus, she would given how tired and sore she was.
Here, her husband was being the sweetest man taking care of her and making her a lovely dinner at their dining table. Candles, white linen and roses, it looked amazing and the food smelt delicious as the warm aromas wafted from the kitchen. He was freshly showered and in his nice shirt and going out jeans while she was a mess in her comfiest pyjamas and a t-shirt she was pretending she hadn't worn for three days straight. Her hair was tied up in a messy bun as she hadn't expected any of this. If she had, she would've at least attempted to look nice but Danny didn't seem to care.
"I wanted you to be comfortable." Danny said with a smile, he sat opposite her at the table, he snapped his fingers. "Garson." he called. Frankie came out of the kitchen in a cute little waiter's outfit and drawn-on mustache on his upper lip.
"Yes." Frankie said in a formal manner, he stood with his back straight and held a white napkin over his arm.
"Awwh, Frankie, you look so smart." Kara cooed, as their 6 year old was so adorable.
"I'm a Garson, Mommy." Frankie chastised her. Kara smothered a smile and donned a serious expression. She just wanted to hug him and adjust the collar on his shirt but held back as Frankie and Danny practiced this evening just for her.
"Oh, Sorry. Yes, Garson." Kara said seriously.
"Menus." Frankie said, he handed them two pieces of paper.
"We'll have water for the table while we decide on what we'll order." Danny told Frankie.
"I'll be back!" Frankie said, he raced to the kitchen.
"This is so adorable." Kara said, she looked at the printed out menu with crayon hearts drawn on it. It was definitely a Danny and Frankie production.
"Don't worry, I'll bring the food to the table. Frankie just wanted to be part of the fun." Danny said with a wink.
"This is really lovely." Kara said, she blinked back tears as it was a really touching date. She didn't know how she got so lucky to have Danny and Frankie in her life.
"Are you crying?" Danny asked.
"No, it's just allergies." Kara lied poorly.
"How are you feeling today?" Danny asked, Kara gave him a dark look and he threw his hands up in surrender, "Don't give me that look, I haven't asked since this morning. The doctor said any day now." Danny reminded.
"Trust me, I want this baby out of me. Everything just hurts." Kara admitted, she hated how pitiful she sounded as she rubbed her sore back. Courtney made pregnancy look so glamorous and easy. All the while, Kara felt like she should live under a bridge and demand people to pay a toll to cross it.
"I'll give you a massage after dinner." Danny promised her, she smiled as she loved his massages. She could use one now as her back was killing her, she wondered if asking for a hot water bottle would ruin the facade.
"I'd love that." Kara sighed. She winced as her back twitched painfully, "I swear this kid is sitting on my spine." she grouched.
"I wish we were Seahorses, then I could take it on for you." Danny said, Kara snorted a laugh.
"You're such a dork." Kara said with a smile.
"Water!" Frankie announced as he placed a plastic bottle of water on the table.
"Thank you, I'll take it from here." Danny said, he rose from the table and poured the water like a comical imitation of a waiter. "Madam, how would you like your Steak?" he asked.
"Medium, please and a ginger ale, if you have it." Kara said.
"Of course, we'll be right back." Danny said, Kara leaned back in the chair listening to Frankie grouch at Danny taking over when he felt he could continue to wait on the table. She smiled as Danny placated their son with some fries. Frankie returned with a can of Ginger ale and a straw, he disappeared and Kara knew that Frankie had grown bored as she could hear him in the living room with Halsey.
About 10 minutes after that Danny placed dinner on the table. It was two steaks placed together in the shape of a heart with fries and salad around it.
Kara couldn't help but laugh as it was ridiculous. In that moment, she felt her chair grow warm and damp, her face fell in mortification.
"What? Is the steak too much?" Danny asked.
"I think I peed myself." Kara admitted in a whisper as she knew there was no way she could hide it. She couldn't believe she lost control of her body.
"Seriously?" Danny asked in a low voice, a smile played on his lips.
"Don't you dare laugh at me!" Kara ordered sternly, she was never more embarrassed in her life. She'd ruined their dining chair. Danny's face straightened into a serious expression.
"I would not laugh unless you gave me permission first." He promised her, Kara took a fortifying breath as he and the situation were trying what little calm she had left. "I'll put the steak back in the oven to keep it warm. We'll get you cleaned up and pick this up where we left off." he told her.
"Ok." Kara said, she felt like crying this time from embarrassment and dismay.
"It's ok." Danny said as he saw her expression.
"It's not. It's embarrassing. I've lost control of my body." Kara said, she hated this. She and Danny were supposed to be having romantic dinner or as romantic as they could get in her current state and with a five year old. He pulled her seat out from the table and helped her to her feet.
"Are you sure you peed yourself? It doesn't have the smell of pee." Danny told her.
"I really don't want to dissect this. What are you doing?!" Kara asked horrified as he leaned over smelt her chair.
"I think your water might have broken." Danny speculated.
"And you had to smell my chair for that?!" Kara asked. She felt a mix of disgust and incredulity.
"I could lick it if you want but I don't know what amniotic fluid tastes like." Danny said, Kara looked at him like he'd grown two heads.
"Who are you?" she asked.
"I think you're in labor." Danny said, he texted Miller, he hated that he had to ruin the man's plans but he volunteered to be on call for today.
"Oh cause you're an expert after sniffing one chair." Kara remarked in a dry manner.
"Frankie!" Danny called, Frankie raced into the dining room.
"Is it dessert time?" Frankie asked excitedly.
"No, Mommy is having the baby. So, I need you to get your go bag as Uncle Miller is coming to get you." Danny said as Miller texted back that he'd be there in 10 minutes.
"Ok!" Frankie said happily as he raced upstairs.
"Oh no," Kara said, as she felt more liquid run down her leg, "No, no, no," she rushed to the downstairs bathroom. Danny fought not to laugh as she left a trail in her wake.
"I'm calling an ambulance!" Danny called out to her as he was not taking any chances.
Half an hour later,
"Sir, what are doing here?" Kara asked as Mike opened the curtain to her bay in the ER. He could not escape this place. He just wanted to avoid the holiday and couples and here he was surrounded by their misadventures.
"You have me listed as your emergency contact. Is Danny out of town?" Mike asked, he felt a mix of mild annoyance and confusion. He didn't remember Danny being sent on a mission.
"No, he is getting me ice chips. I can't believe they called you. I'm so sorry for the inconvenience." Kara said apologetically, she realised she had forgotten to update her emergency contacts after her return from deployment.
"Since I'm here, do you want to find your wayward husband?" Mike asked, he didn't know what else he could do for her.
"No, I'm sure he'll be back soon. I'll be fine, for what it's worth, thank you for coming. I really appreciate it." Kara said, she rubbed her belly with a pinched expression. Given her vitals were getting high, he knew she was probably having contractions. She didn't need him around watching her.
"Anytime you need anything, you call." Mike told her, as soon as the words left her lips his phone rang.
"Seems like someone needs you." Kara said, she blew out a slow pained breath. Mike admired her tolerance for pain.
"I'm a popular man tonight." Mike shrugged as it was the ER's front desk calling, he wondered who the next idiot was. "Good luck and I look forward to the announcement of the newest family member and knowing how many of Green's digits you break. I got a bet on 3." he told her.
"I'll do my best to make you proud, Sir." Kara promised him, Mike smiled as he turned to see Danny come their way.
"You got this." Mike told her, She nodded, he gave a short wave and headed to the front desk to attend the next emergency.
"Admiral." Danny said surprised to see him.
"Green, keep up the good work." Mike told him, he kept walking.
"Yes, Sir." Danny said a little confused but before he could press his luck and ask. Kara called for him, he rushed to her side, closing the curtain.
