Forks, Washington; population three thousand two hundred and forty six. Where the sun only shines a few times within a few months. The rest of the days and months is filled with cloudy skies, rain, snow, and thunderstorms. It's a small town surrounded by heavy forest. A town where everybody knows everybody.
The town of Forks is nothing compared to Arizona. Where majority of the year is filled with hot summer days, and desert. Alexander always preferred the rain, just like he always preferred to be called Alec. Alec didn't mind the cold. He always loved spending those two weeks out of the summer with his adoptive dad, Charlie. Even though him and Bella are fraternal twins and shared the same mom, Charlie wasn't his biological father.
Alec never got to know his real father, and never wants to. Renee, him and Bella's mother, had two lovers and fell pregnant. She met Alec's dad in Port Angeles, the closest city to Forks; when you want to go shopping, bowling, dine out, or go to the movie theaters. The guy wanted nothing to do with being a dad, nor did he ever love Renee. Renee kept him a secret till she gave birth to her twins. The doctors confirmed though it is rare, Charlie wasn't the father of both kids.
Charlie was heartbroken, but also too in love with Renee to walk away. Charlie then gained custody and adopted Alec; before Alec even turned a year old. A few years later, and a lot of fighting, Renee left Charlie. Renee believed Charlie always held a grudge against her about Alec, as well as she wanted to travel... and Charlie wanted to settle. Renee took both kids with her, while Charlie only got to see them once a year for only two weeks at a time. Though that was about to change. Alec and Bella were saying goodbye to Arizona, and are saying hello to Forks.
~Twilight~
"Your hair has gotten longer." Charlie mumbles breaking the silence of the car ride. He glances over at Bella who was fidgeting in the passenger seat. Charlie then glances up at the review mirror to look at Alec. "-and you've gotten taller." He states before focusing back on the road.
The siblings had just arrived in Port Angeles, and was making the drive with their dad to Forks; where Charlie is the chief of police. The twins figured since their mom, and her current boyfriend Phil, want to travel and be on the road... they should go live with Charlie.
"Yeah.. I uh cut it the last time I saw you..." Bella replies nervously, now playing with the ends of her hair. "And Alec has gotten taller, he was fifteen the last time you saw him." Bella continues, reminding Charlie it has been two years since they spent a summer here in Forks. "He's been growing like a weed."
"The beauty of time." Charlie all but grumbles. You could tell the man was nervous and wants things to go smoothly. He wants to be part of their lives. Though he can't help but be sad and kind of angry that it has been two years since he's seen them; two years he can't get back. Though he doesn't show it, he's glad he has the time with them now.
The rest of the car ride was quiet. Alec kept to himself in the backseat listening to the music playing through his ear buds. Not paying any attention to the brief conversation between Charlie and Bella. And yes, Alec was aware that Charlie was not his biological dad. Alec didn't care though, truly. He loves Charlie and looks up to him as a father. Despite not seeing each other regularly, Alec would often call Charlie to check in on him. He still wouldn't say they're real close, but he still has a better relationship with Charlie than Bella does.
The cruiser pulls into a small driveway in front of a white two story house. Off to the side there's a shed full of fire wood, and a boat sitting out on the side yard with a tarp. As well as his mother's old black 1993 Jeep Wrangler YJ in the driveway. Alec's kind of confused why Charlie had it out. Though it was once his mother's, it's in Charlie's name; that's why it remained here. Usually the Jeep was covered and sat by the shed. The yard wasn't perfect. The grass was mowed, but with the rain it was a muddy mess. There was some weeds overgrown around the house, but fresh mulch. You could tell Charlie trimmed up the bushes not that long ago, and over all kept up with the yard maintenance despite the gloomy weather.
The three of them exit the car. Alec puts away his ear buds in his jean pocket. Charlie opens the trunk and begins grabbing some of their luggage. Bella and Alec both help him, and begin to take their stuff inside the house. Alec looks around as they enter the home, everything looked the same as before. Then again, Charlie was never big on change.
"So how's Renee?" Charlie couldn't help but ask. Bella and Alec shoot each other a knowing look, both of them very aware Charlie is still in love with her. The man still had a few pictures of him and Renee hanging on the walls. The three start climbing the stairs to head towards the bedrooms.
"She's good. She's the same really." Alec says breaking the awkward silence that followed after Charlie's question.
"Is she happy?" Charlie asks, pushing it.
"Yes." Bella says this time. Charlie nods in acknowledgement, and drops the topic as they all reach the top of the stairs.
"I cleared a few shelves off in the bathroom for you two to share." Charlie comments, reminding the two there was only one bathroom in the three bedroom home.
"Right. One bathroom." Bella says not so happily. Charlie shows Bella her room first.
"I kept the room the same, got a new bed for you though. I also put Grandpa's old desk in here for you. I hope you like the bedspread... the lady at the store picked it out. You like purple right?" Charlie rambles awkwardly, hoping Bella is satisfied with the room. He sets down a bag of Bella's things on the bed.
"Yeah, purple's cool. It's great, thank you." Bella says truthfully. Her eyes wonder around the room surprised. She was kind of touched that Charlie kept all of her stuff from when she was younger. After a long pause Charlie mumbles a quiet "okay" before leading Alec to his new room. Alec and Bella would always share what is now just Bella's room. They each had their own twin bed and would just change in the bathroom. It worked for them as they did only stay for two weeks during the summer. Now that they will both be here for a lot longer, Charlie cleaned out his office and made it his son's room.
"I cleared out the office for you. I figured you needed your own space." Charlie mentions as they get to the room. "I gave the room a fresh coat of paint, and got you a new bed as well. I left my desk in there for you, I hardly ever used it." Charlie says with a shrug. "I hope you like green for your bedspread, the lady at the store picked it out as well. And if you remember Billy Black, he uh had an old dresser he wasn't using... I figured it would work for you." Charlie explains putting some of Alec's bags down, finally being free of luggage.
The room was about the same size as Bella's, though she got the bay window. A full size bed placed in the middle of the room, with a forest green bed set folded at the foot of the bed. A nice black dresser angled in one of the corners of the room. A board on the wall that had some of his childhood art work thumb tacked to it, just like Bella's. A nice black matching desk that was against the opposite wall of the bed. The walls freshly painted with an off white color. A gray floor lamp on the one side of the bed, the other was a small dark oak side table. His bed had a nice dark oak wooden headboard matching the night stand. The room was nice, and Alec can tell Charlie put effort into it.
"It's really great, thanks dad." Alec says honestly. Alec gives Charlie a few pats on the back before making himself at home, by starting to unpack his bags. Charlie watches him for a few seconds at the doorway, really happy he has both of his kids under his roof again. Charlie walks away letting Alec settle. Before Alec could get too deep into unpacking there was a horn being blown outside. Alec decides to go outside to see who it was. His room didn't have a window that faced the front of the house like Bella's. Alec's windows faced the back of the house.
"Alec, Bella... you remember Billy Black don't ya?" Charlie asks, as the twins both make their way out of the house towards the trio. Charlie motions towards Billy, who was now in a wheelchair.
"Yeah... you're looking good!" Bella says with a smile, teasing Billy a bit; considering the last time her and Alec saw him he wasn't in the wheelchair. The comment brought a smile to the man's face.
"Glad you two are finally here. Charlie hasn't shut up about it, since you guys said you were coming." Billy greets while picking on Charlie. Charlie playfully scoffs.
"Keep exaggerating, I'll wheel you down the hill!" Charlie jokes, and suddenly the two were pretending to spar each other.
"Right after I ram you in the ankles!" Billy barks back, he couldn't help but laugh at him and Charlie's antics. The two take the play fight along the road. Jacob walks closer to the twins. The three of them watch the older men goof off with smiles on their faces.
"I'm Jacob... we used to make mud pies when we were little." Jacob says unsure if the twins remember him or not.
"Of course!" Alec says with a smile, him and Jacob grab each others hands and pull in for a quick hug. Alec pats him on the back, thankful to be reunited with his childhood best friend.
"Yeah I remember..." Bella says unsurely. She remembered playing with another kid other than Alec, she just didn't realize this was the kid. "Are they always like this?" Bella couldn't help but ask, gesturing towards their dads. Jacob snorts.
"It's getting worse with old age." He jokes, just as Charlie and Billy come back to the teens. Charlie pats the bed of the truck.
"So what do you think Bells?" Charlie asks. Bella and Alec look at him confused.
"About what?" Bella asks not understanding. Charlie nods his head towards the truck, and Bella catches on.
"No way. The truck is for me?" Bella asks out of surprise, and excitement.
"Just bought it off of Billy here, a homecoming present." Charlie confirms, smiling at how Bella is reacting. Alec watches Jacob explain how he rebuilt the engine and Bella claiming it's perfect. After Bella accidently hits Jacob with the truck door, being her clumsy self, Jacob and her hop in so Jake can explain the clutch.
"Don't think I forgot about you." Charlie starts off, talking to Alec. "When your mom and I were together she would run the Jeep. It's uh been sitting over the years, but I had Jacob look at it. He put all new fluids in, new tires, and a new battery. Now it runs like it should, and it's all yours." Charlie explains tossing a set of keys at Alec, who caught the keys easily. Alec felt really touched Charlie did that.
"That's amazing... thank you." Alec says pulling his dad in for a quick hug, pretty much speechless of the gesture. Alec Jogs over to the Jeep in awe, and hops in.
"See I'm down with the kids" Billy jokes.
"Oh yeah, you're the bomb." Charlie picks back.
