(After 'The Secrets in the Proposal')
Thank you for reviewing my story. I appreciate it.
I don't own Bones.
Oooooooooooooooo
Pelant was dead and the nightmare was over. Booth had killed the monster and Pelant couldn't hurt anyone ever again.
As he stared down at Pelant's body, he felt nothing but relief. Normally, killing a man would have filled him with a sense of sadness, but in this case, he felt that this was destiny. Christopher Pelant had tortured, killed and mutilated the bodies of several people including Special Agent Hayes Flynn. Flynn had suffered after being shot multiple times while trying to capture Pelant and even though he'd been given a medical retirement he had still tried to bring the serial killer down only to be killed in a horrifying manner.
Faith was a tenuous thing, but Brennan had known that Booth would find her when she went to confront Pelant and her faith had not been misplaced. Stepping over the killer's body, she moved towards Booth and placed her arms around him. The feel of his arms wrapped around made her feel safe and she would never take that for granted. "You came."
"I came." Grateful that he had found a way to get into the abandoned plant, Booth knew that this situation could have had a tragic outcome. "Are you alright?"
"Yes, I am." Her life had been in turmoil for several years, ever since Christopher Pelant had demonstrated his callous disregard for life and had killed Inger Johanssen and left parts of her body at the base of the Lincoln statue at the American Heritage Museum. From that moment until now, Pelant had manipulated her and Booth to get what he wanted. Now he was dead and he would never be able to threaten them again. "I knew you would come."
Kissing her cheek, Booth closed his eyes and sighed. "Always, Bones. Where you go, I'll follow."
They held each other for a few moments then separated. Brennan looked down at the body of her enemy and knew that no one would mourn for his lose. She usually hated bold sentiments like that, but in this case, she knew she was right. "He's destroyed so many lives and tried to destroy us. Please don't blame yourself for his death, Booth. You did what had to be done."
"I don't blame myself, Bones." Booth didn't look at Pelant but instead kept his gaze upon his wife. "Pelant got what he deserved." He didn't feel responsible for Pelant's death. The man had made terrible decisions in his life that lead to death and destruction and no one was to blame for his death but Christopher Pelant.
Pointing towards the catwalk behind them, Brennan knew it was time to leave. "We can go outside and wait for the coroner and the techs to arrive."
Before they left, Booth decided he needed to clear the air between them. "When you asked me to marry you, I was the happiest man alive. I wanted that to happen so much, but Pelant had been monitoring both of us and he found out about the proposal. He used his computer skills to hack into any live camera he wanted to, any phone he wanted to . . . He told me that if I agreed to marry you, he'd kill five strangers then he'd murder five more until I turned you down . . . Bones, it killed me to make you unhappy like I did, but I couldn't let him murder innocent people and . . . he told me that if I told you what was going on he'd start killing people right then and there and I wouldn't be able to stop him . . . I'm so sorry I couldn't tell you what was going on. I really am." He hoped she could see that he didn't have a choice.
"I know you, Booth." Brennan placed her hand on his arm to connect with him. "I didn't understand what was going and for a while, I thought you had stopped loving me."
Feeling sick, Booth shook his head. "Never Bones, that's never going to happen."
She knew he was sincere and she regretted not understanding that Booth was under duress when he had turned down her proposal. "But I talked to a friend of yours, Aldo Clemens . . . he had some interesting things to say about you."
Surprised, Booth stared at Brennan and wondered what was happening. "How do you know about Aldo? I've never mentioned him to you, at least I don't think I have."
Amused, Brennan shook her head. "You had several business cards in your jacket pocket for a strip club . . . Paradise Lost. That didn't seem like normal behavior for you. You haven't frequented strip clubs as long as I have known you and yet you had the business cards in your jacket pocket. I went to the club and while I was there, I met the owner . . . He introduced himself and told me he was your confessor while you were in the Army . . . Aldo said you loved me and you wanted to marry me . . . you turned me down when I asked you to marry me, so his words were contradictory . . . what he said next made me think . . . 'I've seen Booth do some terrible things and difficult things, but only if he was compelled by a very good reason' and he was right, Booth. You were acting in a very unBoothy manner and there had to be a reason for it. I didn't know what it was, but I assumed that it was for a very good reason and you would tell my why when you could."
"God, I was so afraid that I would lose you." Relieved, Booth moved closer and kissed her. Their lips parting he nodded his head. "I wanted to tell you, but I couldn't risk it, not if telling you was going to get a bunch of innocent people killed."
"I trust you, Booth." She looked into his face and felt sad for her partner. He had been used by Pelant and she had almost fallen for the ruse. "I decided that I trusted you and that when the time came you would tell me what was going on. You have told me and now I know what happened. You had a very good reason to do what you did."
Relieved that she understood, Booth kissed her. "Thanks, Bones. Thank you for trusting me. I'll never let you down."
"I know you won't Booth." Glancing back at the body, Brennan shook her head. "A completely wasted life. He was a genius and he could have used his intelligence to do good for others, but instead he killed people and destroyed lives. I will never understand why people waste their talents and their lives. It's not logical."
"Let's go, Bones. I need some fresh air."
Ooooooooooooooooo
Let me know what you think of my story. Thank you.
