(After 'The Woman in Limbo' & 'The Boy in the Shroud')
A/N: This is a sequel to chapter 201.
I don't own Bones.

The game was driving him crazy. It was the bottom of the eighth and the Phillies hadn't scored even though they'd been given two opportunities in the last two innings. Leaning forward, he clutched his beer can denting the sides of the can as the catcher came up to hit. Before the man could take a swing, someone knocked on Booth's apartment door. "Shit!"
Reluctantly, he placed his beer can down on the table, stood up and hurried down the hallway to the front door, listening to the game as he went. At the door, he heard the crack of a bat and turned to face the living room as the person on the other side of his door knocked again. Opening the door, he was surprised to see Cam in the hallway. "What are you doing here?"
With the sound of the baseball game roaring down the hallway, Cam knew why Booth was trying to be polite, but was failing. "Is that the way to greet and old friend?"
Embarrassed, Booth glanced down the hallway and knew the game was over for him. "I was watching the game . . . you know I can get a one track mind when that happens."
"I do." Smiling at her friend, Cam motioned towards the living room. "Aren't you going to invite me in?"
Stepping back, Booth waved for her to enter. "Of course I am." Once the door was closed, he moved down the hallway with Cam following him. "I didn't know you were in town. You should have called me and let me know. I could have got tickets for the Nationals game or something."
Glad to see her old friend, Cam noticed that the man was looking as good as ever. "Oh, there's no reason to do anything special, Booth." Cam stopped next to the couch, placed her purse on the coffee table and sat down. "I took the job and I've moved to the District."
"You did?" Surprised, Booth sat down on his recliner. "Hey that's great. What job? Where are you working?"
A little surprised, Cam shook her head. "The Medico-Legal Lab, you recommended me for the job to Dr. Goodman. I'm now supervising the Lab and I'll be working as the coroner. I thought you knew about this."
"Um . . . no . . . I mean, yeah I recommended you for the job, but I haven't talked to Dr. Goodman for at least three weeks. Angela Montenegro called me and told me last week that he went on a sabbatical and she was going on vacation to Texas to see her father . . . Angela is one of your employees. She's a computer genius."
"I haven't met anyone yet." Cam leaned back against the couch. "I start next Monday. I met with the board of directors at the Jeffersonian with Dr. Goodman and I was hired two weeks ago. I came down with my sister, found an apartment and my father helped me move in this week. I finally unpacked everything today and decided to come see you to let you know we're going to be working together."
Amazed, Booth shook his head. "Why didn't you tell me sooner? I could have helped move you down here."
"Oh, Dad wanted to do it and I didn't see any reason to bother you about it. I paid two teenagers living next door to me to help with the move." She had always enjoyed Booth's friendship and she was looking forward to renewing it now that she was in town. "I see you've added a few things to your apartment." Aware that Booth loved old things, Cam noticed a few 'new' old advertising signs on the wall. "Dad found a Coke sign with an outdoor thermometer at a flea market and he gave it to me to give to you. It's at my apartment right now. I'll bring it by this weekend."
"Wow, I'm going to have to call your father and thank him." Booth had always liked Cam's father. The man had served during Korea and he had a lot to say about that and the way the Army was run now. Booth found him to be insightful and entertaining.
Pointing at the beer can sitting on the coffee table, Cam decided she was thirsty. "Do you have any more of those?"
"Oh yeah." After he picked up his TV remote and turned off the TV, Booth stood up, entered the kitchen and returned with two bottles of beer. He handed Cam one and sat down again. "When I recommended you for the job, I wasn't sure you'd take it. I know you like living in New York."
"It was time to move on to bigger and better things." Her bottle open, she sipped some of the beer and leaned back against the couch again. "The Jeffersonian Medico-Legal Lab is the top of the heap and to supervise it will be a feather in my cap. Dr. Goodman talked to me about what happens at the Lab, who will be working for me and the contracts we have with the FBI, the Pentagon and the CIA. I was also told that Dr. Brennan works for foreign governments when they need her help with the approval of the State Department. Her reputation is amazing, but I've never really met her. Well, I bumped into her outside an elevator at the Hoover a couple of years ago and I attended one of her lectures . . . I've been told she's brilliant . . . Is she?"
Amused, Booth smiled at his friend. "She's the best forensic anthropologist in the country . . . and she reminds me of that fact once in a while. It's not bragging for her though. It's just a fact. You'll see what I mean when you meet her."
"I see. I've been told that she's on a dig right now." Dr. Goodman had told her about a few of the amazing cases both Dr. Brennan and Booth had solved with the help from the other scientists at the Lab. Their record was very impressive.
"Yeah, she likes to do one of those at least once a year." Booth hated to lose his partner when that happened even if it was temporary. "A lot of important scientists are always asking her to work for them . . . She's good . . . real good." After he sipped some of his beer, he placed the bottle on the coffee table. "You're never going to meet anyone smarter than her . . . well, there's a guy named Zach Addy at the Lab that's a genius too. He's a little weird and he takes some getting used to. And your bug guy is Dr. Jack Hodgins. He's into conspiracies and he doesn't trust anyone that works for the government . . . he's okay most of the time and he knows what he's doing. Actually, everyone that works at the Lab is smart. I guess they'd have to be to work there since they are the best in the country."
"I imagine so." Leaning forward, she retrieved her bottle of beer and drank more of the cool beverage. "I want to thank you for recommending me for the job. It was unexpected and appreciated."
Shrugging his shoulders, Booth smiled. "Hey, it was my pleasure. I didn't know if Goodman was going to take me seriously or not, but the last time I talked to him, he said he wanted to get back into archaeology and he was going to need to find a replacement before he left. You were the first person I thought of. You were the chief coroner of New York, so I don't think he could have got anyone better if he had tried."
"Thank you Booth." Cam had always respected Booth's abilities as an FBI Agent and the man knew a lot of coroners and medical examiners in his line of work. It was nice to think he thought she was the best. "I think we'll make a good team."
"Bones . . . Dr. Brennan is my partner, Cam, but yeah, it'll be nice to work with you too." Booth wanted to make sure Cam knew that Brennan was his partner. He wasn't about to lose the best partner he'd ever had.
She sensed a little defensiveness from Booth and Cam found that interesting. She hoped that working with Dr. Temperance Brennan was going to go smoothly, but there was one thing she was going to make sure everyone knew at the Lab. Dr. Camille Saroyan was in charge of the Medico-Legal Lab and she was not going to share authority with anyone.
Ooooooooooooo
Their case had been solved and even though it turned out that the boy Alex had pushed Dylan Crane out of the window causing the young man to fall to his death, Brennan felt that justice had been done. Alex was too young to be tried for murder or second degree murder, but he would get the counseling and psychological help he needed to get through what had happened. Brennan didn't put a lot of faith in psychology since it wasn't quantifiable, but Alex needed help and a sympathetic ear.
Stirring some sugar into her coffee, Brennan listened as her partner talked about Parker's report card. Clearly the child was bright and intelligent and Booth was proud of him. "It is an excellent report card."
"Yeah it is." Booth poured some salsa on his omelet and proceeded to cut it up into bite size pieces. "So . . . How did your meeting with Cam go? Are you still working at the Jeffersonian?"
"Of course." Her attention on her pancakes, Brennan dribbled some maple syrup on the cakes before cutting them up.
Staring intently at Brennan, Booth couldn't help but notice that Brennan hadn't looked at him since she had sat down. "She told you, didn't she?"
"Who is she and what did she tell me?" Brennan realized that Booth knew that Cam had told her that Booth had let her supervisor know that she had been in Foster Care. She didn't know how he knew such things, but she wasn't going to be able to deny it if he pressed her.
His interest no longer on his eggs, Booth placed his fork down and stared at his partner. "Bones . . . really?"
"Yes, she told me that you had told her that I was in Foster Care as a child." Brennan knew that Booth had been trying to help her, but she found it annoying that he knew she needed the help when she hadn't realized that she did. Ever since Cam had arrived at the Lab there had been a competition between her and her new supervisor and it had taken their latest case to realize that they would both have to compromise if the Lab was going to continue to do the excellent work it was known for.
Slowly nodding his head, Booth picked up his fork. "She didn't understand you and she needed some information to make the right decision . . . She was going to fire you and I didn't want to lose my partner."
"I understand." After she sipped some coffee, Brennan speared a piece of the pancake and stared at if for a moment. "We talked and I will be allowed to question her decisions and defy her without repercussions three times a week. She is supervising the Lab, but I do get a say in how I work cases."
"Sounds like a good compromise, good for you." Booth knew that Cam was a good leader and she would get her team to work more efficiently. This was just proof that she was that good. "Good for you."
