(Season 12)

I don't own Bones, but we all know that.

Ooooooooooooooooo

She had been afraid. Her mind wasn't working the way it should be and Brennan was afraid that Booth would reject her. She was his partner but what if she couldn't be that partner anymore? What if she couldn't do her job anymore? What did that make her? Who would she be if she wasn't the greatest forensic anthropologist in the world?

Who am I?

Booth had moved his chair closer and stared intently at her. You're the woman I love. You're the one who kissed me outside a poolhall when it was pouring rain. That's who you are. You're the one who proposed to me with a stick of beef jerky in your hand even though you're a vegetarian. You're the Roxie to my Tony and the Wanda to my Buck . . . Who else is going to sing hot blooded with me? And besides, we're way better than Mulder and Scully. I don't care if you know about the bones or if we know how to solve crimes. All I know is that I want to spend the rest of my life with you. This is you, Temperance Brennan. You.

His words had been sincere and filled with love and Brennan knew that no matter what happened Booth would keep his promise and never walk away from her. He loved her and she loved him. It was enough.

For a long time, she had feared that someday she would ruin their relationship, that she would say or do the wrong thing and Booth would leave her. He had promised her that would never happen, but her past experiences told her otherwise. She had dated many men in the past and had been in serious relationships with a few of them. Those few whom she had let get closer to her had eventually betrayed her and walked away and she didn't see why Booth would be any different?

She had been injured in the blast at the Lab and she didn't seem to be the genius she used to be. It was a frightening experience and it left her floundering, but Booth was her rock, her anchor in this storm. He loved her and he wasn't leaving her. It both surprised her and didn't surprise her. Booth wasn't like other men or at least not like the men she'd had relationships with in the past. He knew who she was and that was enough for him.

Mark Kovac was dead. The man had killed Aldo Clemens and a widow who had got in his way. He'd tried to kill Booth and Brennan's children. He was responsible for the death of two FBI agents and ultimately for the death of Max Keenan. He had tried to kill everyone at the Lab with bombs and failed and after he tried to kill Booth and Brennan again Kovac had finally died a fiery death. The man had had a choice. He could have given up, but he tried to run down the partners and Booth had shot him. Kovac had driven off a cliff and died in the crash. Their case was closed.

Booth wasn't one that liked to gloat about anyone's death, but Mark with the help of his sister Jeannine had ruined a lot of lives, killed and hurt a lot of people and the fact that Mark Kovac had tried to kill his children made Booth feel vengeful.

He entered the interview room with Brennan following behind him. Once they were in the room, he closed the door and glanced at the glass wall to the left of him. Caroline was in that room, a silent witness to what was about to happen.

"Ms. Kovac, Jeannine . . . we found your brother." Booth sat down and faced his prisoner. "He was out at the farm."

Brennan sat down next to her husband and chose to remain silent. She wanted to see how Booth was going to handle this interview.

Her hands shaking, Jeannine tried to remain calm. "He . . . Is Mark alright?" She dreaded what Booth might tell her.

Staring intently at her, Booth knew that what he was about to say would have an emotional effect on Jennine. He was wary and prepared himself. "He's dead. He tried to run over me and I shot him."

"No!" She screamed her denial. "No, you had no right. You killed our father and now you've killed my brother. You're a monster."

"I'm a monster?" Booth shook his head. "Your brother killed four people that I know of and he blew up the Lab trying to kill everyone in it. He did it for revenge. He did it for hate. What I did was during a war. Your father was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of men, women and children. Civilians who didn't have the same religion that he did. Innocent people who didn't share his same ethnicity. He planned on killing more and he had to be stopped. I stopped him."

Her eyes burning with hate, Jennine shook her head. "My father was a patriot and what he did he did for our country. Those he killed were enemies of the state. You killed a patriot."

"A patriot?" Booth shook his head. "Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better, but he was a war criminal and I stopped him from murdering others . . . You and your brother killed innocent people to get to me. What is your excuse? Like father like daughter?"

She was furious. Jennine couldn't understand how this had turned out so wrong. Her brother was dead and their enemy was still alive. "I would kill you now if I could. I would kill a hundred people to get to you."

Booth glanced at the window then back at Jennine. "Well, you're going to be charged with accessory to murder, torture, kidnapping, bombing a crime lab, assault and anything else the prosecutor can think of. I'll be dead of old age before you ever get out of prison if you don't get the death penalty."

"I doubt that will happen, Booth. Killing federal agents makes this a death penalty case." Brennan stared at Jennine with a look of contempt. "I will be there when the government kills you. You're responsible for the death of my father and with your help your brother tried to kill my children. I will not regret your death." She knew she sounded cold, but she meant what she said. Some people were too dangerous to be set free. She would make sure that never happened.

"I revenged my father." Jennine stared at Brennan with a look of fury. "Your father is dead. You must know how I feel."

"No, I don't." Brennan shook her head. "My father was protecting my children from your brother who meant to kill them. Children . . . Your father was responsible for the deaths of many children not just adults. He was a terrorist and he died because of it. Mark died because he was also a murderer and you will die because you helped your brother kill an innocent man and woman. You tortured them. You also helped kill two federal agents. Those two deaths will make sure you get the death penalty."

A sneer on her face, Jennine laughed. "I will kill you. This isn't over. I will kill Agent Booth and I will kill your children. You will see. I will destroy your family like you destroyed mine."

Finished with the interview, Booth and Brennan stood up. "Goodbye, Ms. Kovac." Booth walked over to the door and opened it. "None of this had to happen. You and your brother were the masters of your own fate. I will see you in court and once your trial is over you'll never see me or Dr. Brennan again." Once Brennan was out in the hallway, Booth looked back at Jennine. "Living in the past doesn't do anyone any good. It eats at you until there's nothing left." With that he motioned for an agent to enter the room and he entered the hallway. "It's done."

Brennan hooked her arm around Booth's arm and stared at his face. "I'm sorry, Booth. What you did you did in time of war. You stopped a terrorist from murdering again. Never doubt what you did. I don't."

Grateful to have someone like Brennan in his life, Booth nodded his head. "Thank you. I . . . Lets go home and see the kids. I'd like to see them."

"Yes, we will go home now." As they walked down the hallway, they passed Caroline as she left the observation room.

"That woman is couyon. Not that I'll let her plead insanity. I'm going to enjoy prosecuting her." Caroline was disgusted with the Kovacs. They had murdered a lot of good people to try to get revenge and Caroline could not forgive that. "Too bad Mark is dead. I would have enjoyed prosecuting him too, the little worm."

"Yeah, but he's dead so you only have to try Jennine." Booth was tired and wanted to go home. "We're going home, Caroline. We can talk about this tomorrow."

Caroline nodded her head. "Yes, you and Dr. Brennan go home."

They continued down the hallway. "Booth, I need to stop by the Lab and get some personal items before we go home. The contractor needs personal items removed from the premises before he can start rebuilding tomorrow. Cam is at the Lab right now waiting for everyone to remove their possessions."

"Alright." Booth knew that Brennan had some things that had survived the bombing of the Lab. It was miraculous that anything had survived including them. "It's been a long day, Bones. We should take tomorrow off. Maybe take the kids to the park and have a picnic." He thanked God that Brennan was back to being her old self. He'd been worried about her injury, but she seemed like her self now. She was brilliant and that set her apart from the world. Besides being a great Mom and partner, that brilliance made her who she was. A confident, independent woman whom he loved and yes, adored.

"Yes, I agree." Brennan had been informed that she would be working in a temporary office until the Lab was rebuilt. "We don't have a case, so I think a day spent with our children would be time well spent."

Oooooooooooooo

Let me know what you think of my story. Thank you.

Couyon is Cajun French for crazy.
