The next incident was in science, where Mr Harris didn't even bother to hide his loathing of teenage students as he spoke. "Alright, since inertia is a subject of which you all know plenty, why don't we start with 'momentum'?" He suggested as I started taking notes, sitting across the room from Scott and Isaac. Usually I would be Isaac's lab partner, but since at the moment we weren't talking to each other, I'd opted to move. "Danny…what do we know about momentum?"
"It's the product of mass and velocity. The more massive something is, the faster its going." Danny supplied so I quickly wrote it down, adjusting my reading glasses until I heard Isaac suddenly pipe up.
"Mr Harris, can I use the bathroom, please?" Whatever. It's not like I'm mad that he's mad at me because I'm totally not, but just for argument's sake, he shouldn't be angry that I'm friends with a couple of alpha werewolves who may or may not be here to cause trouble.
"I have to go to the bathroom too." It was only when Scott asked to go as well that I figured something must be wrong. Mr Harris refused him, reminding him of his policy of only one student permitted on bathroom break at a time. "But I really have to go. Like, medical emergency have to go."
"Mr McCall, if your bladder suddenly exploded and urine began to pour from every orifice, I would still respond, 'one at a time'." Grimacing at such a disgusting image being painted in my mind, I tried to block it from my thoughts. "Is that enough hyperbole for you, or would you like me to come up with something more vivid?"
"No. No. That's pretty good." Lifting my head, I glanced across to Scott before scribbling a note asking him what was going on and passing it to the person next to me, directing it to Scott. He read it then responded, the note being returned to me where I opened it up to read his response. Ethan and Aiden are outside. I hear fighting. Not good. My hand shot up into the air.
"Mr Harris, I need the bathroom."
"One at a time." He glowered at me but I was already standing up.
"Sorry but my menstrual cycle does not seem to understand your bathroom policy, I'm afraid I'm going to have to go. Mother nature calls." A flutter of laughter arose from the students as Mr Harris failed to come up with a response, watching me hurry out of the room and close the door behind me to see a bloodied Ethan being tossed towards Isaac by Aiden. I froze on the spot, staring in disbelief and uncertain of what to do but before I could act, Mr Harris followed me out of the classroom and took in the situation.
"What is this? What's going on?" Danny quickly went to Ethan's side, helping him up and asking if he was alright.
"Uh, he just...he just came at me."
"Isaac, what the hell did you do?" Not waiting for any kind of explanation or excuse, Mr Harris pointed at him. "Detention at lunchtime with me. You too Miss Powell." Huh? Wait what?!
"Mr Harris, she didn't do anything…" Ethan quickly tried to cover for me, making me look at him quickly before sending a small smile his way. "She tried to help, it's not her fault."
"Detention." Mr Harris reaffirmed before ordering everyone back into class. Scott pulled Isaac away before he could punch Ethan for real as I lingered, taking hold of Ethan's face in order to inspect the injuries but any cuts and bruises were completely healed already, leaving only the blood behind.
"Sorry, we didn't mean to get you caught up in that." Ethan apologised quietly so I shrugged.
"I told you Mr Harris liked handing out detentions. What was all that about anyway?" Ethan smirked.
"Just getting to know the competition." Competition? None of that made sense to me but Ethan told me not to worry about it so I let him go, drifting back into class where I failed to concentrate for the remainder of the hour and dreading lunchtime. To my surprise, Allison was also in detention so I took a seat next to her as her brows knit together slightly.
"Hey, what're you doing here?"
"Got caught up in a fight between that moron and the twins." I nodded my head towards Isaac who took the row in front of us. "Why're you here?"
"Fell asleep in French class." I laughed without meaning to, finding it funny that Allison of all people would take a nap in class. When Mr Harris entered I quickly shut up, ducking my head as he started to dish out chores for all of us to do.
"The two of you will wash all the boards in this hall…re-shelving the library…" Nodding to each of us in turn, Mr Harris then pointed his ruler at the three of us, assigning us our own punishment. "Restocking the janitor's closet." Isaac immediately looked behind him, mainly at Allison and I bit my lip, thinking that this was just one disaster waiting to happen. After all, last time Allison and Isaac where in the same place together, she'd slashed him up with Chinese ring daggers.
"Mr Harris? Does it have to be with her?" Isaac asked him quietly, going to the front to try and switch jobs. "Actually, does it have to be with both of them?"
"Now that I know you prefer not to...yes. You have to be with them." None of us were too happy about this Isaac, just deal with it. Picking up a bunch of things to restock the shelves, Isaac wheeled the trolley full of boxes whilst I set one down on the floor. It smelled funky in here. Totally gross. I hope my parents don't find out about this detention, I'm not sure whether or not they'd believe me if I said it wasn't my fault.
"I'll go get the rest." I said, turned on my heel and leaving Allison and Isaac. Although the two of them probably shouldn't be left alone together, I wasn't all that keen on being near Isaac right now either. He'd meant what he said about killing the twins, and although I understood that their being here wasn't exactly innocent and they were not only trying to get people in trouble but to cause harm, I didn't want Isaac to become a killer because of them. "Stupid werewolf." Muttering under my breath, I picked up the last box as well as the remaining toilet rolls before carrying it back.
When I got there, I found the door shut and barred with an entire vending machine pressed up against it and the sound of Isaac yelling and pounding on the other side, begging to be let out. "Isaac!" Oh god, Allison was in there with him. If he starts transforming and loses control, he could tear her apart. "Isaac, Isaac listen to me. It's Cordy, can you hear me?" I thumped on the door to get their attention then tried to push the machine away from the door, straining with all my might but with no luck. Grunting in frustration, I pressed myself as close to the door as possible as Isaac began to calm down. "It's okay, you're okay Isaac. Just take deep breaths and slow your heartbeat, take it easy."
Hearing his rapid breathing on the other side and the murmurs of panic, I started to sing to him like I did for Lydia when she used to be stressed or upset. My voice carried like a soft lullaby, crooning delicately as I focused directly on Isaac's presence on the other side of the door. I could feel him. Sense his overpowering fear of dark, small places. Wanting to comfort him and keep him calm so that he didn't hurt Allison, I poured as much power into my voice as I dared, the non-verbal song moving in a smooth flowing swell which gradually began to pour into Isaac.
My voice had the power to give rise to certain emotions in others, so to Isaac as he listened to me sing, his head was being filled with the image of a peerless lake, wide, open and free far away from this tiny closet. It was enough to slow his breathing and keep him pacified until Scott arrived, having heard Isaac's screaming and the rapid heartbeats of those inside. When he touched my shoulder and pulled me aside I stopped singing, watching as Scott effortlessly pulled away the vending machine and opened the door, allowing Isaac to stagger out. He dropped to the floor and sucked in deep breaths of fresh air, gripping his head as I quickly went to Allison to make sure she was okay. "I'm fine, I'm fine. Thank you."
"I'm so sorry. I didn't mean…" Isaac rasped, eyes flickering from blue to luminous gold until he finally calmed down and they settled.
"It's not his fault."
"I know. I guess now we know they want to do more than get you angry." They meaning the twins. They were the only other people in this school who'd have the strength to move that vending machine. They want to get someone hurt.
"So are we gonna do something?"
"Yeah. I'm gonna get them angry. Really angry."
