Callows and Roman fussed over 'Red', Roman seemed physically compelled to call her that. With all the blood the nickname felt horribly morbid. Oscar leaned his back against the bar to watch helplessly.

The barkeep, "You need a place to stay. I got two rooms upstairs."

"I'd prefer to share one with Ruby."

The barkeep frowned, "I'm not having an unmarried couple sharing a room."

Oscar blinked, where in hickland were they? He could not afford to argue with the man so he curtly lied, "I don't know how you do things here. I'm not coupled with my sister."

The barkeep chuckled, "Sorry kid, can't be too careful you know. I got a double. It's $70 a night."

That was cheap even in the middle of nowhere. Oscar pulled out his cash, enough for 3 nights. He yelped when the man gripped his wrist tightly.

"That's a counterfeit kid. You think you can pull a fast one on me?"

Oscar flushed and stammered, Ironwood gave him an allowance, the head of the military wouldn't give him fake money. He had to think quickly, "What are you...I guess my uncle played a prank on me...not expecting us to run into-"

The man huffed, "I'm a little sympathetic kid. As long as I don't hear of you duping anyone with that money and you are willing to pay $100 for tonight you can pay me before midnight."

Oscar shivered, he was low on Aura, yet he had to find work now. Meaning he'd have to leave Ruby alone with these people. "Is there a mission board?"

"Yeah, you'd have passed it on the way in. Tyrian's a good guy for a Faunus. I'll make sure he carries your sister up to your room."

Oscar looked back at the pair digging out bullet pieces from his best friend. Tyrian Callows and Roman Torchwick were so young. How was Roman even alive? Oscar saw the video of the kingpin being eaten. Nora had even made it a gif that flashed the word 'survive'. He tore his eyes away from them and mentally prepared himself to trust Ruby in their care. He saw a newspaper on the bar and his heart hammered harder at the date.

10 years into the past

Oscar was 5. He looked at the barkeep and his voice cracked, "Could you make sure she had a newspaper."

The old man gave the kid a quizzical look and nodded. Oscar took a moment to pet her hair and watched as Roman fitted a couple of pieces of a bullet together to see if they got all of it out. The youth let out a scared sob and tears rolled down his cheeks, "take care of her. I've got a room set up here."

Tyrian loosed a whiney laugh, but his hands were steady and sure.

A reassuring smile from the ginger, "Hey Oscar, I'll make sure little Red is okay."

Time travel be damned, the weirdest thing to happen today was Torchwick assuring him that 'Red' would be safe with him.

Ruby woke up in a hard bed with someone fiddling with her waist. She tried to sit up when a pale hand held her down.

"Don't Red."

She thought she was going to throw up.

He died.

His voice was gentle but there was no doubt that this was Roman Torchwick. She opened her eyes and she was confident she might still be asleep. Not even the Gods were cruel enough to have him be the first person to greet her if she had died.

He was young, the jawline was most certainly his and that green eye as well...the other was silver? She glanced down at his hands and he was bandaging her wounds. Torchwick was old but not old enough to have a son about her age?

Annoyed, "It's rude to stare."

She still stared at him unblinking, "I've never seen another with silver eyes."

He raised a skeptical brow, "Eye. Certainly, you met one of your parents." Ruby was silent and after a pause Roman handed her the paper, "Your brother wanted you to read the newspaper."

Brother? "Oscar...where is he?"

He gestured to a wad of Lien on the nightstand. "Your money is counterfeit, an incredibly advanced counterfeit. There are some hunts on Mantle's notice board."

Ruby shuddered in panic, "O-Oscar hasn't hunted by himself before." She tried to sit up, but the boy put a hand back on her sternum.

"You will open those stitches. I don't know enough to help you if you do. Mr. Callows is tending to other patients in the neighborhood." He scoffed, "Or at least the ones who would let a Faunus touch them."

"Callows?"

Dryly, "Tyrian, his military medic training saved your life." He paused looking at the frantic girl, he tried to give her a reassuring smile, "I'm Roman Torchwick and I'm not going to hurt you." He saw her mouth part, "Is it really that hard to believe?"

Ruby snatched the newspaper, the date…"Torchwick is this today's paper?"

"Yesterday's why?" He craned his head to see the headline.

It was 10 years ago. Ruby would have been 7 … "Torchwick, how old are you?"

"Call me Roman. I'm 16. Why does that matter?"

She breathed heavily, "Could I have a moment alone please."

He shrugged, "It is you and your brother's room. Just promise me you won't move. I'd hate to see him cry again." She raised her brow, and his cheeks pinked slightly. He stood, "I'll be back later to change your bandages, and bring you food."

Her tone was accusatory, "Why are you being so nice to me?"

He rubbed the back of his neck, "If there is a chance I can help someone, I will try to."

Skeptical, "And what do you want in return?"

He looked a little hurt, "I'm not…" He pinched the bridge of his nose, "Not everyone in this world is only looking out for themselves, Red." He stood abruptly. "I'll see you later. Don't tear your stitches."

Ruby was pretty convinced she time-traveled into a parallel universe. One where she was more jaded than Roman Torchwick.

Oscar was exhausted, sweaty, and somewhat bloody. He had not expected to open the door to his room above the tavern to see Ruby reading the newspaper to a girl he punched in the face once.

Ruby gave him an awkward smile, "This is Neopolitan Torchwick. She climbed up through the window."

The girl flashed a broad innocent smile, how else do you enter a room?

His lips formed a thin line and he attempted to smile. "Miss Neopolitan. Could you leave? I need a moment with my sister." The girl's face fell and she pouted.

After a few moments of privacy. Ruby sighed, "She is 14, Oscar."

"We time traveled. A decade into the past."

"Did we? Because the Torchwicks aren't even remotely…" Ruby made some stabbing gestures before she shook her head and gave a soft laugh. "You left me alone with Tyrian Callows. He has tried to kidnap me several times...and he murdered a bunch of people."

"Future tense Ruby."

"What?"

"He has yet to do these things. Right now all we know is Callows is a discharged military man with medic training."

"Could we change this, make the future better?"

He smiled, despite the obvious shocking nature of their circumstance Ruby came to the hope that they might improve the past. "We need to prioritize figuring out how to get back. We need to find Ozpin."

Ruby waved the Newspaper, "Atlas is projected to launch in 3 months."

"I remember being there...Ozpin was there. Do you want to wait?"

"Can you guarantee to know where Ozpin was before then? He traveled a lot when I was a kid."

Oscar was quiet for a while and shook his head, "He was always cagey with details." There was a knock at the door. Oscar crossed his arms, "I settled the bill with the tavern owner."

He opened the door to Tyrian Callows with Roman behind him. The dark-haired man's tail wrapped about his waist in a nonthreatening manner. His affect was nervous and he fidgeted slightly.

The older man saw Oscar stare, "May we come in? We brought you some dinner and I would like to look at your sister's wounds." the man gave a short jittery laugh and picked at his tail.

Oscar let them in and managed to restrain the urge to move his hand towards his weapon. He internally chanted they were here to help.

Tyrian made slow and deliberate movements as he set a pair of covered plates on the table. He approached Ruby and froze when she flinched. "If you prefer a human to look after you-"

Ruby exclaimed, "No! I don't care about you being a Faunus. I'm uh just not used to men touching me."

Oscar caught how Roman's eyes darkened and Tyrian tensed. Ruby probably had no idea what she had just implied.

Tyrian tilted his head, "That bandage will need to be changed."

Ruby nodded and began to unwrap it with precise and practiced movements.

The skill was not lost to Tyrian, "You've treated a fair bit of wounds?"

"We traveled a lot." She looked aside, she had made the effort to become a better medic after the man in front of her poisoned her uncle.

Roman, "You're a huntress?"

She reached into her skirt pocket and pulled out a wallet. Oscar had made fun of her for wanting a paper license. They hadn't officially issued those in a few years. Ironwood placated her, knowing the girl wanted one like her mother had. She handed the laminated card to Roman who raised a brow.

"Colonel Ironwood issued this to you...Ruby Rose." Roman looked at her in curiosity and he rubbed his chest as he handed her card back.

Ruby flushed and she was so grateful Ironwood did not write his rank down.

Tyrian, "You military?" He gently prodded at the wound.

Ruby shook her head. "Never. I proved myself to be a competent huntress."

Tyrian gave a quiet high pitched laugh, "Certainly Irondick wants to recruit you. Mantle isn't far from Atlas, I'm sure he'll help you."

He noticed her panicked look at Oscar. The young man commented, "we'll be waiting a few months for a friend to arrive...When Ruby is better, we can go on bigger hunts and settle what we owe you."

Tyrian shrugged , "Just cover the supplies and it'll be fine. I'll appreciate the break from being the neighborhood's doctor and huntsman."

Roman muttered, "I wish you would teach me how to fight."

The man's nerves immediately settled and his voice turned hard, "You can defend yourself, your mother didn't want a violent life for you."

"Then she shouldn't have-"

"Roman!" Tyrian admonished.

He huffed and looked at Oscar, "You've been bleeding. Take off your shirt and I can take care of the wounds."

"It's just an abrasion on my collar bone. I can clean it myself."

Roman looked dissatisfied and Tyrian chuckled. Not a skittish one, the laugh rumbled deeply in the Faunus's chest. The slightly older man turned to Ruby, "I won't need to rebandage you, but you'll have to take it easy for a few days." He gestured to the plates he brought, "We'll leave you to eat. Come on Roman, let's go home before Neo eats dessert before dinner."

Roman packed up the back and his eyes lingered over Oscar before flashing a charming grin on his way out.

Alone Ruby looked incredibly flabbergasted, "Does Roman Torchwick have the hots for you?"

Oscar covered his heated face, "Figures, the first guy who showed a passing interest would be dead."
