Authors Note
Hello. Welcome back, everyone. This is chapter 5, in which Ash, Red, and Serena will finally be going to Professor Oak's Summer Camp. Since Serena already has some friends who she knows are going to be at the camo with her, she won't be a crybaby like she was in the anime. Honestly, the way they portrayed her in the anime really annoyed me.
For those that reviewed the previous chapters, I've sent you a PM answering any questions you had and such. For those that use guest accounts while reviewing, I'll answer your questions and reply to your reviews in the Authors Note at the beginning of each chapter. There have been no new guest reviews since the last chapter.
The poll for Red's starter is still on my profile, so please do go and vote. Keep in mind that the Pokemon that became Ash's starter will not be included in the poll for Red's chapter in order to keep the starter repetition to a minimum. They might end up having some pokemon that are the same later on, but definitely not the same starters. This poll will only be active for about another week. After that, I'm going to switch back to the poll for Ash's starter because I gave it only 5 days while this one has gotten above 2 weeks now. So for those of you that wanted Pikachu, you now have the chance to change things. It's only off by one. ;)
Last announcement. I changed my mind and decided to include Elaine from the beginning of the story. She'll be 5 years old just like all the others. There will be no poll for Serena's starter, Leaf's starter, Gary's starter, and Elaine's starter. Those have already been picked out. Are they the same as the ones they would receive in the canon. Well. You'll just have to wait and find out.
Ok. Let's get on to the story.
A week had passed since the day Ash, Red, and Serena had first been introduced to each other. During this week the three children had become fast friends. Every day, they would meet up at the Pallet Town Park in the morning and evening to play with each other. Through Ash and Red, Serena was also introduced to Leaf, Gary, as well as Elaine.
Leaf was a young girl with slightly messy, dark brown hair going down to her waistline. She always wore a sleeveless teal shirt with some black on the hem, along with a short red skirt. She also had some light blue socks. To complete her outfit, she always wore a white hat with a Pokeball logo on it, and always carried a bright yellow messenger bag with her.
Gary was Professor Oak's grandson. He had long, spiky brown hair. His favorite outfit was a light blue shirt with red around the edges, along with grey shorts. At times, his grandfather's fame would make Gary act quite arrogant towards other people.
The last member of the gang was Elaine. Similar to Gary and Leaf, Elaine had brown hair as well, but hers was quite short, going down just up to her shoulders. She wore a short skirt which was red on top and dark blue on the bottom, along with a partly brown, partly white shirt.
Through Ash and Red, Serena became friends with them as well. The 6 of them loved to play hide and seek as well as tag. When it came to tag, Gary was always the fastest, but Ash and Red were the best at Hide and Seek. To their confusion, they always knew where the others were hiding, even though they never cheated. It was like some strange energy would always cause their friends' location to be visible to them. They didn't realize that they had already started to tune in to their aura powers, which enables them to see where other people were.
Today, the children had decided to stay out a little longer. They were currently in the middle of a fast-paced game of tag.
Gary sprinted towards Ash and tapped him on his shoulder. "Gotchu," He said with a smirk, before turning around and sprinting off again. The others laughed as Ash glared at his friends.
"Aww, man!" Ash whined. Ash was about to sprint off towards one of the others when he remembered their intentions for staying late today. Professor Oak's Pokemon Summer Camp was going to begin tomorrow, and Ash and his friends wanted to discuss the day before and plan things out. He called the rest of them over, and the 6 friends spent the rest of the evening talking about the summer camp. They knew that they would be ready for it.
-The Next day-
Delia was downstairs in the kitchen preparing breakfast for Ash and Red. She took a look at the clock and noticed it was already 8:00. The Summer Camp would begin at 10:00 and all students were asked to wait at the entrance to Professor Oak's Laboratory by 9:45 at the latest. Doing some quick mental calculations, Delia decided that they could sleep for another half an hour or so and still make it on time, so she continued to prepare breakfast.
Today she had decided on making pancakes for them. 15 minutes later breakfast was prepared and Delia carried it into the dining room. She set 3 plates before pouring 2 glasses of milk for her sons and a cup of tea for herself. Afterward, she called upstairs, "Ash, Red. Breakfast is ready. Come down."
"Coming mom," They said as they excitedly ran down the stairs. Both twins were completely psyched for the Summer Camp. They couldn't wait to get started.
"Are you guys ready," Delia asked.
"Of course mom," Ash said.
"Yea. We'll be the best students Professor Oak has," Red continued.
"Of course you will." Delia chuckled, before looking at the clock. It now reads 9:00. "Ok hurry up and eat your breakfast. We need to leave in 15 minutes." With that, the twins began shoveling food into their mouths like a starving Snorlax. Within minutes, all of the food was gone.
At 9:15 sharp, Delia, Ash, and Red began their walk to the Oak laboratories. The lab was just a short distance away from their house, meaning they didn't need to use a car or a taxi to get there. They arrived at the lab 10 minutes in advance and noticed a large crowd in front of the gate. There were many people who Delia didn't recognize, as lots of children had come from other cities in the region to learn under the esteemed Pokemon Professor. Looking through the crowd, they found their friends, and the families came together for a brief huddle.
"You guys make sure to pay close attention to everything," Delia said to the children.
"Yea. Don't waste this opportunity, kids!" Serena's mom said.
"Don't worry. We won't" Ash said.
"Yea, we'll pay close attention," Serena continued.
"Of course. We'll show these other kids a thing or two," Gary said, smirking arrogantly.
"I'm sure you will," Gary's older sister said to the group.
They continued to talk for the next couple of minutes. Suddenly the gate swung open and Professor Oak walked out. Immediately, all the talking stopped, giving way to whispers as the people realized that the camp was about to start. Professor Oak looked towards all the young children and smiled. He nodded towards Delia and the others who he had known for a long time before turning serious again.
"Welcome to my annual Summer Camp. This summer camp is for all aspiring Pokemon trainers from ages 5-7." Professor Oak said. "It will last for 1 week, and we will be doing multiple activities every day that will help you learn more about Pokemon." He turned and gestured behind his back, and his assistant came pushing along a cart. The cart contained lots of books and other items.
Professor Oak first handed out the books. "These books contain lots of information on Pokemon," he said. "We will read a small portion of this book at the beginning and end of class every day and finish it by the end of the camp." He quickly passed out a book to each trainer. Next, he gave them all their name tags as well as the official Summer Camp sacks to keep their belongings in.
Now it was finally time to begin the camp. "All students coming from other cities will receive a place to stay here at the lab, but no parents will be allowed inside the premises during camp hours," Professor Oak continued. "Now come along with me and we will start off the camp." Professor Oak walked through the doors with all the kids chattering excitedly behind him.
Professor Oak first led the kids to a small classroom. There were 20 students in all. Most of them were 5 years old, with just a couple that were 6, and no 7-year-olds. He first decided on doing a small activity to introduce everyone to each other. To do this, he had them randomly pick a card out of a box. They would have to find the person with the same card as them and tell their partner their name, where they live, hobbies, things like that. Every minute, they would switch over to a new partner. It was a good method to get the children acquainted with each other.
Ash's first partner was a boy named Ritchie. Ritchie always wore a teal shirt that had a light blue collar, along with pants of a similar style. Similar to Ash, he always had on a cap, which was dark blue and yellow with yellow circles near the forehead.
"Hey!" Ash greeted him. "I'm Ash. What's your name."
"Nice to meet you," Ritchie answered. "My name's Ritchie. I'm from Frodomar City."
"Oh, that's cool. I've never been there before." Ash said. "I live right here in Pallet Town with my mother."
"Pallet Town is really nice," Ritchie said. "It's nice and quiet as well. Hey, what's your favorite Pokemon!"
"Umm. I don't really have one," Ash said scratching his head.
"Really," Ritchie asked.
"Not really. I like all Pokemon equally," Ash said.
"Wow ok," Ritchie said. "Well, my favorite Pokemon has always been Pikachu."
Suddenly the bell rang, signifying that their minute was up.
"It was great talking to you, Ritchie," Ash said.
"Yup! I'm really glad we met today, Ash," Ritchie replied. The two quickly shook hands and grinned, happy about their new friendship. Then they picked a new card and moved off to find their next partner.
After 20 minutes, all the kids had finished partnering up with everyone else in the class. Thanks to this activity, they had all gotten comfortable around each other and were now waiting for any further instructions from the Professor.
After this, the professor instructed them to return to their table groups. "Ok class, take out your textbooks," Professor Oak said. "Flip to page 9, where the first chapter begins. This chapter will be on the numerous different types of Pokemon. After reading the chapter, we will go outside to the field and have a live demonstration of what we learned."
The children quickly pulled out their books and flipped to the appropriate page. "Ok. Elaine! How about you start us off by reading the first paragraph out loud." Elaine quickly read the paragraph to the others before professor Oak called on the next student.
Finally, they had finished reading about half of the chapter, and Professor Oak had called for a stop. He then led them outside to the field. They had spent the last hour or so studying all the different pokemon types, and were going outside to look at some different Pokemon that the professor had here at his lab.
For the next hour or so, the Professor showed them numerous Pokemon at his lab of every type. He even introduced them to dual-type Pokemon such as Rhydon, which was ground and rock. Ash especially loved the Pidgeot. He thought it was the most majestic flying type Pokemon he had ever seen. Red, on the other hand, thought that the coolest Pokemon here was the Charizard. He was very interested in the final evolution of the Kanto fire starter. Ritchie thought that the Professor's Dragonite was the strongest Pokemon around, and Dragonite was only soaking up the praise. The other students chose to stay back and observe as Ash, Ritchie, and Red tried to interact with the Pokemon.
After all of these activities were over, it was already noon. Professor Oak told the students to stop what they were doing and follow him into the cafeteria, where the students all ate lunch. Professor Oak had ordered pizza for them all as a first day treat. They also had along with that, multiple cartons of vanilla ice cream and large bottles of juice.
After lunch, The professor took them back outside to watch some pokemon battles. He said that this would help them learn more about type matchups as well as the effectiveness of different types of moves. Using what they had read from the textbook, they had to pick the best Pokemon to go up against the one Professor Oak would choose.
"Ok class. The first Pokemon I pick will be Poliwag here," Professor Oak said, pointing to the small blue Pokemon. "Now which of those pokemon would be the right choice to battle Poliwag," he asked, pointing towards Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle.
"Oh, I know!" One of the children said. "You should Charmander because Poliwag is weak to fire type attacks."
"Oh come on!" Gary broke in. "You should know that Poliwag is a water type, meaning that you should use a grass type Pokemon against it."
"That is right, Gary." Professor Oak said. "Therefore the right answer to this question is Bulbasaur because it is a grass type Pokemon." He then turned to look at the other child. "Robert, Poliwag is strong against Charmander because it is a fire type," He said, to which Robert nodded, showing that he understood.
"But, Professor," Red questioned. "It's true that you should use Bulbasaur to have a type advantage, but if you didn't have Bulbasaur, wouldn't it be fine to just use Squirtle against Poliwag?"
"And why is that, Red," Gary asked, confused.
"Squirtle is a water type too, so Poliwag's attacks won't do as much damage against Squirtle since both are the same type," Red said. "This way, neither Pokemon would have an advantage, and that would be a better matchup over battling Poliwag with Charmander."
"Right you are, Red," Professor Oak said proudly. "You can also use a Pokemon of the same type unless it is a dragon type Pokemon, which does extra damage to its own type."
After this lecture, the Professor chose 2 of the students to have a battle using Poliwag and Bulbasaur. The randomly chosen students ended up being Serena and leaf. Leaf chose Bulbasaur because it was her favorite Pokemon, so Serena had to use Poliwag. "This will be a one on one battle between Leaf and Bulbasaur, and Serena and Poliwag." Professor Oak said. "Let the battle begin!."
"Poliwag, use Water Gun," Serena instructed.
"Pol-Poli," Poliwag said. He leaned backwards and opened his mouth, firing a powerful burst of water from his mouth.
"Take it Bulbasaur," Leaf instructed. Bulbasaur just smirked and took the attack head-on. Some dust rose up as the attack hit, and Serena smiled confidently. Suddenly Bulbasaur jumped out of the smoke completely unharmed.
"Bu-But how," Serena stammered. "That should have done some damage."
"Serena, since Bulbasaur is a grass type, it takes minimal damage from water type attacks." Professor Oak commented. "Bulbasaur's grass type attacks, on the other hand, will do lots of damage to Poliwag, so be careful."
"Now Bulbasaur." Leaf said. "Use your Razor Leaf attack."
"Saur," He said (Eat this!). He quickly focused energy into his bulb, which started to open up. Through the bulb, it launched a quick volley of razor-sharp leaves at the other Pokemon.
"Poliwag, try to dodge them," Serena said. Poliwag tried to move out of the way but was too slow. The Razor Leaf attack hit him head-on and he was thrown back. He landed at Serena's feet with his eyes replaced with swirls.
"Poliwag is unable to battle," Professor Oak said. "Therefore, the winners are Leaf and Bulbasaur." He then called all the other students over. "You saw that Poliwag got taken out by just one Razor Leaf attack from Bulbasaur," He said. "That's because Razor Leaf is a grass type attack, and does double damage to water-type Pokemon like Poliwag. That is why type advantages can give you an edge in a battle which would otherwise have gone the other way."
His face then grew serious. "Keep in mind though, that using the type with an advantage will not always guarantee you as the victor, nor will it make you lose if you're Pokemon has the disadvantage." His face then broke out into a smile. "But, we will be focusing on that tomorrow. You have all done very well today, and I'm sure you all learned a lot of new things. You have two more hours until the end of class. We will use about half an hour of that time to read the rest of the chapter, and after that, you will get the rest of the time to play."
Hearing that, all the students ran into the classroom and pulled out their textbooks. For the next 30 minutes, Professor Oak had them read the last 15 pages of the chapter. In between, he would answer any questions and help them understand the concept by using different virtual simulations. Finally, they were done with class. "Great job today everyone," Professor Oak said. "You now have the rest of the time to yourselves to do as you please."
The children cheered before running outside to have fun. Ash and the rest of his friends played tag, hide and seek, and other games, and even invited the other kids to join them. For the first time, Serena wasn't the slowest one there. Sadly, Gary was still the fastest. They didn't even realize when it was time to leave until Professor Oak came and told them. He then invited all the students from other cities to come with him to see where they would be staying for the duration of the camp. The rest of the students were allowed to return home.
Ash, Red, Gary, Leaf, Serena, and Elaine all returned home happy from their first day of class. They couldn't wait for camp to begin again tomorrow.
That's that! That's the end of chapter 5. As usual, I try to stay at an average of about 3000 words, so this chapter only has the first day of the camp. I thought skipping through an entire week of camp in 1 chapter would be too rushed. I've seen a lot of stories that didn't work out because they were too rushed and had to be restarted, and so I'm trying my best not to make that mistake. So we've seen that on day 1, all the students have gotten to know each other pretty well. They've also done a couple of activities to bond with each other and learn more about Pokemon.
Ash has made friends with Ritchie pretty quickly as well. Does that mean he'll be part of the journey too? Ehh, we'll see. Hopefully, I wrote this chapter well. I really wasn't sure how the first summer camp chapter would turn out, but this is my best attempt, and I've worked really hard on it. I hope you guys enjoyed it.
I tried to give small solo sections to Ash and all of his friends. That's one reason why I included the battle (to include Serena and Leaf and not always have Ash and Red doing the Pokemon related stuff). The only one who I wasn't able to give much to was Elaine, but I'll try to do something for her in the next chapter.
One more important thing. I'll need some OC's later, so if anyone wants to help me with that, please do PM me. All I'm asking for is basic information such as full name, hometown, home region, age, favorite Pokemon, personality, occupation (What they want to become, such as trainer, coordinator, performer, etc). At the same time, I'm not accepting any OC gym leaders or Elite 4s or Champions (unless they were one of these in the past and no longer are). Any OC's will be greatly appreciated and I'll make sure to incorporate all of them at some point in the story. Thanks!
To end I would once again like to give you a couple of reminders:
1) Red's poll will close in 2 weeks, and that will be the final decision, Ash's poll is closed for now, but will reopen after Red's poll closes (for about another week)
2) The next chapter will include another day of Camp. There will probably be another 2 chapters revolving around the camp after this chapter unless I manage to squeeze everything I want into one chapter (which I honestly doubt I'll be able to do without making it like 5000 words)
3) The next age jump will be right after the summer camp chapters are done, and Ash and the others will now be 9 years old.
With that, this chapter is complete. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Please remember to review, ask any questions you have, give suggestions, and vote in the poll. Constructive criticism will be greatly appreciated, as it'll help me become a better writer. If you guys liked the story, then please do favorite the story or follow it. Thanks!
Peace Out and see you all next time.
