It's a whole new world
Part 3
Queen Iduna never thought she would regret the troubles of state affairs. The trip she had made with her husband a few days earlier had its share of political hassles and heated negotiations, but at least she could enjoy the magnificent landscapes of this season and a somewhat energetic atmosphere. The castle, of which she was traversing the corridors dragging her feet, now seemed far too calm to her. The few conversations she had with her family and servants seemed almost deafening compared to the whisper of her steps and the scratches of feathers on the paper. During this moments, she understood why her dear daughters were so melancholy.
It was for their own safety that she kept them inside the castle. At least, that's what Iduna and the king kept saying to themselves every day since this tragic accident with Elsa's magic. However, when the queen looked out the window and contemplated the landscape, she felt a void in her heart. She missed the woods. The whistling of the wind, the heat of the sun, the song of the rivers, the cool shade of the rocks... Long ago, she imagined herself walking with her children in the forest, as she had so often done with her own mother. The lady was the sovereign of a kingdom, but she felt that it was nothing more than the colorful mausoleum in which she wandered every day.
"I don't want to hear about it anymore!" commanded an authoritarian voice.
The queen carefully approached the room where she was going. Her husband was a good man, but he remained a king. She preferred to avoid interrupting him if he had a complicate discussion, so she just listened to the door of the royal office.
"Your orders are clear and you will repeat them to each of the servants: until someone give me irrefutable evidences, I do not want to be disturbed by these ridiculous stories. Did I made myself clear?"
A guard confirmed without delay, in a rather anxious tone, before leaving the room, saluting the queen by the way. Iduna finally entered and closed the door behind her. Her husband was at the end of his nerves, his jaw clenched and his fists firm. When she called him, her understanding voice eased the tension that made the room a little stuffy.
"What's going on Agnar?"
The king sighed to release all the frustration he had accumulated and replied by collapsing in his chair.
"Another guard came to tell me that someone saw a monster, near the harbor this time. Except that obviously, like the other, he was not able to provide any evidence or a witness who saw the same thing. It's at least the tenth time this week. "
"Agnar, suggested the queen, if it is so common, perhaps some guards should be dispatched to investigate."
"I did it this morning. I forgot to tell you, sorry. My mind was elsewhere because of this treaty with the Southern Isles. "
"It's alright." Iduna placed a light as a feather hand on her husband's shoulder. "And I'm sure people will be reassured that their king is doing something to allay their fears."
The sovereign took his wife's hand with gratitude. She always knew what to say to reassure him.
"By the way, she commented with a smile, we have already met trolls. Would monsters be such a surprising thing? "
"Honey, there is a difference between beings that our legends have talked about for centuries and ridiculous creatures that appeared overnight." Agnar seizes some paper with notes. "Listen, since yesterday people said they saw a big purple rat, a metal stork and an acorn with feet."
The queen did her best but couldn't help laughing at the last monster listed. It was then that happened an energetic knock on the door. The sovereigns recovered before inviting the one who did it to join them. It was a breathless guard who hastened to greet them and report.
"Your highnesses! The men you sent have return. And they brought a very… strange thing."
This declaration baffled the two monarchs.
"Really?" asked the king. "What is it?"
"I do not know. It looks like a big dog, but none of our men has ever seen one like this. They found it sleeping in a civilian's storeroom and put it in a cage. They are waiting in the courtyard. "
Agnar and Iduna exchanged a curious glance, before following the soldier.
Meanwhile, the princess Anna was finishing presenting the portraits in the art gallery to her new friend, whom she held in his arms.
"And this, Eevee, is Joan of Arc. It's my favorite one."
"Eevee."
The girl was delighted with the little pokemon's energy boost. Thanks to the pokéball, which she had understood the nature through research in the pokédex, she had been able to transport and hide him without problem. She only had to carry it in the small bag that she had sewn herself. It was not a wonderful one, her sewing skills were a little rusty, but she was quite satisfied with it. She also declared this to justify to the servants the fact that she wears it for no apparent reason. Fortunately for her, no one asked too many questions, the reverse would have surprised her anyway.
Thus, she had been able to bring Eevee into the library, the cellar, the throne room or simply other rooms without being noticed. She had come to appreciate these metallic spheres and always took a second one to play catch the ball with her friend. The new spaces she was showing him kept Eevee from being bored, but she suspected that after a while she would have gone visited the entire castle and returned to the starting point. The pokemon had been showing signs of boredom since yesterday. For now, all she could do was talk to him. It didn't bother her in the least. She didn't had a new person to talk to for a very long time after all. That said, an interlocutor she could understand would not have been refused.
Then she heard footsteps in the corridor. She got stressed because they seemed close and there was no door in the art gallery close enough. She couldn't use the pokeball for, despite its practicality, it had a disadvantage: the noise. The object made a high-pitched sound each time Eevee entered or left it. If she used it now, she'd be spotted. So she just let go of Eevee to let him hide under an armchair. The butler of the castle appeared with an intrigued air that she was beginning to know by heart.
"Excuse me princess but ... were you talking to someone?"
"Of course not Kai. I was just thinking out loud. "
The servant apologized for the inconvenience and left the girl with the portraits. When his steps disappeared in the royal labyrinth, the princess allowed herself to release the pressure with a deep sigh. She knew he and Gerda were just watching over her, but this kind of intervention was becoming quite annoying. She did not know, however, whether she should be ashamed of this or not. He and Gerda were doing so not only out of duty but also out of affection. She had known them since she was a little girl after all. Finally she took the pokeball out of her bag and looked for Eevee under the chair. Except that she found nothing there except a bit of dust. Panicking, Anna quickly scanned the gallery and perceived a tuft of fur that disappeared through the other entrance of the room.
"Ohnonononono ..." murmured the princess in a strained voice. "Eevee, come back."
These words did not reach his ears, already far in the corridor. The pokemon with an injured ear loved being with Anna, but when he saw this opening to a potentially huge new space, the call of the unknown was too loud and his little paws could not stand still. He rushed through the corridors like the wind in the woods, the princess just behind calling him in a low voice. When he came to a corner, he braked suddenly. Two guards were discussing and Eevee remembered that he should not be seen. The pokémon leaped back. With a careful look, he realized that none of them had noticed him. He sighed in relief, but worried again when a shadow covered him. The princess, very angry, pointed the pokeball at Eevee and locked him inside thanks to the beam of light which gushed out with a shrill cry.
"Congratulation, you're grounded..." she mumbled.
"What was that?"
Anna didn't have to think long to figure out what was going on. Panic started to overwhelm her and with a frantic look, she looked where she could run. Except that the corridor had no doors nearby and that the guards were close to her. A few steps and a look and she would be spotted. In a well-oiled reflex, she put the pokeball back in her satchel and prepared a lie. It was then that a terrible uproar interrupted the soldiers' steps and the girl's thoughts, as well as those of the princess Elsa, trapped in her room. Everyone looked out the window, towards the courtyard from which now stood a thin cloud of smoke.
A group of guards surrounded a form that emerged from a block of blackened wood. Each pointed a spear at the it and one of them yelled at two other persons to go back the castle. Anna recognized her parents immediately, but her eyes were quickly drawn to the battle that had just started, while the guards who worried her just before ran away to join their colleagues.
A guard threatened with his blade what looked like a small and stocky tiger with a flaming orange fur and black like coal stripes. In response, the beast began to growl and opened its mouth wide to spit fire. Baffled, the soldier didn't dodge and lost his officer's hat, thrown to the ground and ignited by the projectile. Several soldiers backed away in fear at this impossibility. One of them attacked with his spear, but the creature jumped to avoid it and threw himself on him, biting his leg with a force that made his target scream in pain.
Anna, stunned by this spectacle of unusual violence, finally reacted when a memory awoke her mind. She dared not believe it but, to be sure, quickly took out of her satchel the famous pokédex and pointed it at the animal which was ready to attack. The little red machine rang and informed in its electronic voice.
"Growlithe, the Puppy Pokémon. While loyal to its master, the Growlithe will drive away enemies by barking and biting. "
The princess jumped at this confirmation: it was indeed another pokémon. Initially excited by the discovery, she quickly became worried. The guards were trying to kill this growlithe and it gave them no reason not to. She didn't want these men to be injured, but when she saw the wooden cage he escaped from, she knew he was just trying to defend himself. What would happen? All the scenarios she envisioned saddened her because she saw nothing but suffering and death. In all of them but one. She refused to think about it. She was in the castle after all. It was against what she had been doing since meeting Eevee.
A new cry echoed in the courtyard and Anna felt heartbroken. Growlithe had charged against a guard with unexpected power for his small size, propelling him against a wall. From behind her window, the princess perceived the eyes filled with pain and rage of the soldier and those fearful and determined of the pokémon. Neither side intended to surrender. The end was likely to be dramatic. Anna refused this. The warriors and the little beast were just scared. She ran into the corridor, determined to stop this tragedy.
From the top of her room, Elsa could see the whole scene and couldn't believe her eyes. Her mother had told her about these monster stories people had been talking about for the past few days, but she hadn't listen to them seriously. The princess could no longer laugh at it. The battle before her eyes was enough to question everything she thought she knew. She had accepted, much to her dismay, the existence of magic and trolls, but not flame-spitting creatures.
Every second, she wondered what was going to happen. The guards tried as best as they could to stop the little beast, which looked like a big dog from where she was, but it showed impressive energy and dexterity. It danced among the blades and attacked them by biting, knocking with its head and throwing fireballs. It was impossible to predict who would win. Would the beast attack the castle after that, like a revenge-hungry dragon? As she watched with fascination at this disturbing sight, some ice formed on the edges of the window.
The king and queen stopped running only when they get on the balcony overlooking the battlefield. They were perfectly placed to watch the fight safely. Agnar did not like that, he felt it was his duty to be with his men, but as a king, and not really desiring to leave his wife, he had to make up his mind to flee. The two sovereigns starred with fear and fascination at what was going on. The king had requested evidences of the existence of these famous creatures and he had been served.
His men were fighting bravely, but they were completely unprepared to fight this kind of creatures. It appeared to be barely exhausted while the soldiers had been burned, bitten or knocked hard. Agnar and Iduna knew they would not surrender, but they never could have imagined what happened next. A powerful noise echoed in the courtyard, the one of the front door which had suddenly opened on a slender figure that Iduna recognized immediately. She called her daughter with terrible concern but she kept running to the battlefield and forcefully called out to the creature.
"Hey! Stop this immediately! " The pokemon turned his eyes to the girl without lowering his guard. "Listen, I understand that you are confused, and this men probably shouldn't have trapped you, but attacking them are only making things worse."
The fire puppy growled again, the muscles even tighter. The guard in front of him retrieved his spear, but the pokémon had noticed it and threw at him a new ball of fire. The soldier narrowly avoided it, losing his weapon again. Anna's eyes widened in fear before frowning in anger. Her mind connected her new knowledge to this situation and gave birth to a new energy which triggered an intuitive and completely new action.
"Enough!" Anna grabbed what was in her pocket and shouted. "Eevee, go!"
The pokeball rose above the courtyard and opened to pour out a torrent of light that turned into her new friend, ready to fight. Everyone present at the castle opened their eyes wide, especially her parents and sister, but she didn't even think about it.
"So... what was it?" hesitated Anna. "Right! Eevee, use Quick Attack! "
Eevee tensed each of his muscles and hurried toward Growlithe at such a speed that he seemed to be in three places at the same time before hitting him. The puppy flew several meters before getting up with more fury than before. Anna began by commanding to the guards to leave. Some hesitated out of loyalty, others because of disbelief, but the more reasonable and frightened brought them into the castle, leaving the princess and her companion with the injured ear in front of the hellish dog and under the dismayed look of her family.
"Alright Eevee…" declared Anna. "I don't like the idea of hurting any of you but he leaves me no choice. Are you with me? "
"Eevee!" he confirmed.
The girl was now overflowed with determination. She had learned a lot about pokémons and their fighting techniques from the pokédex, which was able to list the known techniques of the pokemon it was visualizing. She really didn't want to harm or endanger a pokemon, but if she wanted to avoid a tragedy, she had to face Growlithe to weaken and control him. He was of Fire type but this should normally not be a problem for Eevee, who was of Normal type. None had the advantage in this fight. Anna therefore focused and commanded her pokemon.
"Okay then… use Tackle!"
Eevee ran back to his opponent but the latter took a deep breath before uttering a terrible cry that intimidated him to the point of stopping his run. Eevee had heard this kind of cry before, but you never really got used to a Growl. Without waiting, Growlithe spat fireballs at his enemy. In a protective reflex, Anna shouted.
"Dodge!"
Eevee didn't need the order, but it helped him react faster. He thus dodged the Ember attack thanks to his speed trained by his long years in the wild.
"Nice Eevee!"
"Eevee!"
"Now, get close to him..."
Eevee threw himself at his opponent who was awaiting him with firm footing, fire flowing from the corner of his lips. When the latter was about to attack again, Anna screamed.
"Sand Attack!"
Eevee braked on all fours and swiveled quickly to send dust with his tail that reached Growlithe's eyes. The puppy, blinded and suffering, spat out a fireball which Eevee easily avoided. Others followed, but none reached their target. The decrease in precision due to his painful eyes and Eevee's higher speed put him in a difficult situation.
"Well done Eevee. Use Tackle! "
Her friend ran to the puppy bravely, but the enemy perceived where the attack was coming from and dodged it at the last second. Taking advantage of Eevee's surprise, Growlithe used all of his strength in a terrible Bite that made his assailant scream in pain, worrying Anna. The orange dog furiously threw Eevee away from him before throwing a ball of fire which he did not have time to dodge.
"Eevee!" Howled the princess as her friend finished rolling on the ground with a scorched fur. "Are you okay?"
The pokémon got up with difficulty but also a sharp look. Anna understood that she had to finish this as soon as possible because this flamboyant puppy was more powerful than she had expected.
"Okay, you brought this on you Growlithe. Eevee, Tackle! "
Despite his injuries, Eevee charged Growlithe at full speed. The dog did not wait to launch an Ember attack on him.
"Now! Quick Attack! "
Eevee propelled and zigzagged so fast that Growlithe didn't know where to look. His fireball touched nothing as Eevee appeared on his right and threw himself forward against him. The puppy whirled and crashed against the courtyard's floor. He tried to get up with an admirable stubbornness, but that did not reduce the tremors of its legs. Anna remembered new information that she had discovered and confirmed with the pokédex.
"Could I ..." she whispered, taking an object from her satchel.
The injured puppy growled again, but the pain broke his intimidating voice as Anna's called him.
"Hey Growlithe! Take this! "
The princess threw her second pokéball with a flexible gesture trained by her games with Eevee and it flew until it touched the head of its target. The magic sphere opened and Growlithe turned into light before disappearing inside. The object stirred once, then a second time, then a third one before freezing with a clear click.
Anna remained frozen for a moment, having a hard time believing what she had just done. She had probably saved the guards, faced a fire-breathing animal, led her friend in a terrible fight, but it was this last action that came to her mind and erupted.
"YEEEES! I did it! I captured a pokémon! "
Eevee ran to her to throw himself into her arms and cuddle her cheek as she laughed in relief, before correcting herself.
"WE did it."
"Eevee!"
Anna tenderly squeezed her pokemon and the stress melted like snow in the sun.
"Wait a second ... Why do I feel like I'm forgetting something?"
The princess froze, eyes wide, and slowly raised her head to the top of the castle. She spotted her parents there, paralyzed in a mixture of stupor and dread. As frozen, Anna's hands dropped Eevee, who cried out in surprise, before she let out a nervous laugh.
"I… guess I have some explanations to give."
