Happier – Chaper 1

Walking down 29th and Park

I saw you in another's arms

Only a month we've been apart

You look happier

It was a relatively normal day in Los Angeles, Lucifer had just pulled up to LUX when he noticed her car parked just across the street. Well, it looked like the Detective's car but then again it looked like the generic police cars the department issues everyone. He began to wonder if it was her car and if it was her car was she possibly inside LUX. He knew it was futile to be thinking these things after how they left things that fateful and ominous day, but a devil could hope. As Lucifer got out of the car, he saw a sight that shouldn't have affected him as much as it did but regardless, he was shocked. It was the Detective and Pierce, or Cain as the devil knew him, walking side by side. It looked as though his burley arms were wrapped around her small frame and at that sight Lucifer wanted to combust.

The emotions hit him like a tidal wave, no a tsunami with no barriers in its path. His devil mind was filled with questions he didn't think possible to ponder. Is this some way for his Dad to punish him? Was this just another misstep in their journey? Or did he really loose her for good? It killed him to even think about how her face lit up, but she almost looked happy. Happier with him. He was quickly pulled from his thoughts when Chloe yelled his name. He didn't think that she saw him but there he was being beckoned by the Detective and her leech. Maybe Chloe sensed him gawking at them from afar. Nevertheless, the two of them were now walking towards him still side by side but his arm was no longer wrapped around her. 'Thank Dad', Lucifer thought.

"Lucifer, I didn't even know you were going to be a LUX right now.", beamed Chloe. "Yeah didn't you mention you couldn't join us at the crime scene because you had a priority business meeting to attend?" Pierce suggested. However, Lucifer knew that was a rhetorical question because Pierce, Cain rather, knew Lucifer was going to meet with Amenadiel regarding Cain's dilemma. Why was Lucifer even helping Cain? Would it not be much easier if this immortal male was out of his way? The obvious answer was yes, but Lucifer couldn't give into the persona that everyone throughout history thought he was. In order to change the worlds view of Lucifer, of the devil, Lucifer himself had to change. The desire to change himself, to become that angel again is what made him want to help Cain; no matter how much he despised the literal task of doing so.

"Well, yes, I did have a meeting, but it ended rather quickly as we couldn't come to a mutual agreement on the idea presented. You understand how that goes sometimes right Pierce?" without missing a beat Lucifer continued. "What are you two up to this late in the workday?"

Chloe looked in between her and Pierce, as if they were trying to come up with a lie or a story as to why the two were together walking around like people who didn't have a care in the world. "Oh, well, Pierce and I, we were um, we were just." Chloe started. Pierce jumped in "I told Chloe that I was new to the area and she graciously offered to show me some of the restaurants I apparently looked over when I arrived." Chloe just looked up at him and grinned, mostly gracious that he saved her from having to explain herself to Lucifer. Not that Chloe felt like she had to explain herself because Lucifer made it abundantly clear that they were nothing more than just partners. Although, Chloe couldn't help but feel like she was doing something wrong, like she chose wrong. If the impromptu lie that Pierce came up with effected Lucifer his face didn't show it, but Chloe could see his eyes and they looked as if there was nothing but a pool of regret and miscommunication.

There was a lull of silence that hoovered over the oddly framed group and the emptiness gave time for Lucifer to look really look at Chloe. She had changed her hair recently, not a drastic change where people at the station would stop her and gossip over the color or length. Rather it was a subtle change, she had lightened it ever so and it caught in the sun rays. Lucifer turned his head to get a better look at the reflection, it was like a star sprinkled its essence in her hair. Sure, there was some golden brown in her hair but this gold, this form of new light radiated from her and was mesmerizing. Gazing at her hair made him wonder, how had it been a month? How did he let himself go a month without her face, without seeing this light?

The regret in his eyes quickly changed when they locked with Chloe's. The silence continued verbally but their eyes said poems. Poems of anger, hurt, longing, distrust, and need floated in between them. There was a mountain of issues left between them and maybe one day they could sit down and decipher them all. They could be kids with treasure maps looking for acceptance, looking for worth, for happiness, or for that partnership they once shared. For now, Lucifer had to settle with the fact that even though he ached for it to be him; the Detective looked happier. A simple fact that though technically immortal, it killed him daily.
