"Are you serious?"
"Very."
"What…I can't take this." Regina tries to shove the ticket back into Mary Margaret hands.
"Regina," Granny sighs. "You need a break. We already paid for the tickets and arranged care for Henry amongst us. All you have to do is say thank you and pack a bag."
"What about work? It's going to be busy. You'll need the help."
Ruby rolls her eyes. "Girl they just told you they already planned everything. Are you really going to bell on me like this…what about Em? I'm not giving them my ticket back just because you want to play the good child."
"Shut up!"
"Girls," David's calm voice joins the conversation. "Regina if you really do not want to go, we won't force you. But we would like for you and Ruby to take our early Christmas gifts and enjoy them."
Regina looks down at the ticket in her hands and can't help but feel a little bit excited but scared at the same time.
Just ten minutes ago she was packing up Henry's bag and preparing to leave Granny's house from Sunday dinner. Granny and the Nolan's had always had a good relationship as the girls grew up but once Regina's pregnancy was revealed and It became clear Cora wasn't going to be much help, the parents became closer as they all pitched in to help the young pregnant teen. Sunday dinners quickly became a thing. The adults wanted to keep a closer eye on the kids and it also made it easier to communicate what plans they had far as who was taking Regina to an appointment or whatever the case maybe.
Dinner had went as smooth and nice as usual. Lots of laughing, planning the next few weeks and just enjoying each other's company. It wasn't until Regina started to head into Ruby's bedroom to retrieve a sleeping Henry that Granny asked for her and Ruby for a moment more of their time. That's when the Nolan's and Granny presented the plane tickets and other travel information to the girls.
Regina was stunned. Yes she's always known what great people Granny and the Nolan's are. I mean they each took in and raised kids that weren't theirs. Granny raising granddaughter after her daughter ran off and David and Mary Margaret adopting Emma soon after. None of them never treated the girls as if they weren't theirs and they extended that love to Regina. The way they have helped her so much over the past few years just shows how great of people they are. But these tickets…it just feels like too much. She doesn't want to take advantage and yet at the same time she really wants to visit Emma.
"Get out of your head." Ruby lightly punches her. "We are going on this trip. Now say thank you."
With tears in her eyes and a big smile on her face, Regina says thank you to these wonderful people in her life.
"Oh for the love of…could you please stop fidgeting." Ruby complains as they stroll across the college campus. "It's going to be fine."
"I don't know. We haven't talked in a few days. What if she doesn't want us here? What if she already has plans?" Regina ask anxiously as she rushes to keep up with the tall brunette.
"The Charmings already made sure she didn't. Emma told them that her roommate was staying in town too so they're just going to hang around the dorms."
"She could be lying."
"Regina." Ruby bites out.
Regina snaps her mouth shut. She knows she's been irritating Ruby since they met up for the flight. She's just nervous to see Emma. Things haven't been rainbows and butterflies between them lately.
At least this time Regina heard it from Emma herself that she wasn't coming home for Thanksgiving. Emma and her parents had talked it over and thought it would made more sense for Emma to continue to work during this break and come home a little early for Christmas break. Emma gets to make more money for presents and the Nolan's get their baby home for a nice amount of time. While Regina understood, it didn't make her miss Emma any less.
They did have a nice summer together and even managed to talk regularly the first month after Emma went back to school. But at some point they both got busy and Regina found herself putting up her walls when it came to Emma. Emma would call just the same but Regina became less giving in their conversations. Regina was just trying to protect herself. That's what she tells herself. Emma will eventually get caught up in her college life and lose interest in their friendship. She's just preparing for it.
"I'm pretty sure this is the room." Ruby's voice startles her out of her thoughts. "You good?"
Regina glares. "I'm fine." And then she knocks on the door.
There is some shuffling around before the door is finally opened seconds later by a small girl with dark hair.
"Hello." She says with a smile slowly appearing on her face. "How may I help you?"
"We are looking for Emma. This is her room correct?" Regina says eyeing the girl. She seems a little weird.
"Correct." Another huge smile.
"Ooookay can you…" Ruby starts but is interrupted by a loud thump coming from the room and then the door is being pulled further open.
Emma appears wide eyed and shocked.
"Holy…what are you doing here?!" Next thing you know Lacey is being shoved out of the way and the brunettes in the hall have their hands full of a blonde girl.
"Surprise!"
Things move pretty quickly from their. Emma invites them into the door room and introduces them to her roommate Lacey and they explain how their parents surprised them with tickets and a hotel room. They gave them a little cash for entertainment but not much. It's only three days and they didn't want them getting into too much trouble.
"I can't believe you guys are here." Emma says for maybe the tenth time as the three stroll across campus. Emma pointing out her different hangouts as she leads them to the coffee shop she's been working at for a few month now.
"This is great, huh?" Ruby throws her arm around Emma's shoulder, pulling her in close. "You don't work tonight, right? What's the plan. We are hitting a party or something tonight, right?"
Regina rolls her eyes with a fond smile. Leave it to Ruby to want to find a party on their first night in town.
"Yeah, uh," Emma looks over at Regina with a nervous smile. "There's this club we were going to hit tonight. But we don't have to if you guys are tired or anything."
Regina knows that last part is directed towards her. She knows since she's had Henry she's become less social and likes to stay in more often than not. The group of friends basically gave up inviting her out unless it's a special event. But she's come all this way to spend time with her friends and have a good time. So she's going to try.
Regina puts a smile on her face and grabs Emma's hand. "That sounds fun!"
