(Chapter Sixteen)

Jane sat at her desk sipping the coffee she had gotten from the cafe when Maura and her had arrived together. She was contemplating that word a lot lately..."together." She smile as a chill ran down her spine at the memory of Maura's words, "I love you Jane... and it isn't a sin for me to do so." She wondered how mere words could cause such a emotional reaction, leaving her all mushy and a full on set smile.

"Well somebody is here early and even smiling about it." Korsak said teasing the woman. Jane snapped out of the memory quickly not wanting to be totally exposed. "Have you solved the case, because that smile says you have?" he said point towards her with the back of his coffee filled hand.

"No... I..." she paused a moment trying to find something to equate why she would be smiling that big for... "Ma is making lasagna tonight and I was just thinking how good it's going to be," she retorted out as a way of distracting him from her smile.

"Oh yeah... that would make me smile too." the man agreed sitting down at his desk. "So do we have anything on these murders yet?"

"Nothing that can be proved but a lot of gut feelings Korsak."

"So the trip to Stockbridge yielded nothing then," more of a statement than a question from the man.

"Well... We did get a possible lead on Judy McDermott."

"Be careful with that one Jane..." he gave her a warning look, "... she is out for blood... mainly yours..."

"Yeah... I know," she said cutting him off as Alley's words came back to her. "Loving someone is never a sin... but judging them... that is where sin lives." She started looking at the dry erase board..."judging them is where sin lives," went over and over in her head causing something to surface.

"What is it Jane... what are you thinking... you have that look?"

It hit her... Judy McDermott thought Alley was involved with Bethany's murder. She admitted this when she asked Mr. Cater when she saw him in the morgue, "Was it your daughters fault that Bethany's dead?" But when she had informed her of Bethany's death the woman had be admit that Bethany was out of the country on a mission trip. "She knew that Bethany didn't go. She knew she was with Alley!" Jane said standing up.

"Who knew what?" Korsak asked confusedly.

"Judy McDermott knew that Bethany didn't go on the missions trip and that she was with Alley." Jane said as she grabbed her keys to head down to the morgue.

"Where are you going?" Korsak asked even though he already knew.

"To go and question Judy McDermott."

"Oh no you don't," he said standing up and walking in front of her as she got a "what the hell is going on" look on her face. "Judy McDermott has made it clear to the brass that she will only be speaking to the police through her lawyer."

"Since when?" Jane asked stomping her foot down in a disgusted manor.

"Since Maura wouldn't release the body and she called every politician she could trying to get it released and couldn't."

"Korsak... that just screams guilt to me."

"I know but nothing we can do but call her attorney and set up a meeting," he said handing her a piece of paper with the attorney's name on it.

She took the paper and stared at it a moment, "I'm going to go see Maura." Korsak shook his head in acknowledgement knowing Jane was frustrated and needed a moment to regroup her next move. "You want anything from the cafe?" she asked as an after thought.

"Na... you go ahead. I'll call you if anything comes up here." She nodded and headed for the elevators. When the doors opened Frankie was standing in front of her. "Hey Jane."

"Hey little brother..." she said stepping into the elevator as he stepped off. The doors started to close until she stuck her arm in front of them causing the doors to fly open again. "Hey Frankie..." she yelled getting the young man's attention. He turned and looked at her. "What's up?"

"Can I have your notes from yesterday?" she asked wanting to see anything she missed or he had gotten differently from the church members.

"Sure..." he said handing her the mini note book from his jacket pocket. "...what's going on?" he asked again, now with a puzzled look.

"Just comparing notes for now but I'll let you know for sure in a few..." she said taking the book, "... thank you."

"Yeah... no problem," he said shrugging his shoulders then heading towards the bull pen.

By the time she reached the morgue she had a stream of questions running though her head, but they all seem to leave her mind when she caught sight of Maura signing some papers, releasing a body to the undertakers. She stopped and just admired the woman for a moment as the thought ran across her head, "...she loves me." This brought back the smile and body shiver as she moved forward to talk with the beauty before her.

Maura looked up from the papers she was signing as she recognized the foot steps approaching the morgue. "Jane..." was said in a surprised but welcoming tone.

"Hey Maur..." Jane said then looked at the men taking the body. "You releasing Bethany today?"

Maura looked at the body bag being loaded into the hearse with a sad expression. "I hate it but I believe karma will have to be that one's justice in this life."

"Maybe not..." Jane said getting Maura's full attention.

"What do you mean... have you found something?" Maura asked with hope in her voice.

"Judy McDermott knew that Bethany and Alley were together before they were killed." Maura looked at Jane like "Okay...and how do you know this?"

"The woman said her daughter was on a missions trip when I first told her about Bethany, then down here she accused Alley of having something to do with Bethany's murder when she saw Mr. Carter. Now... how could she have known Alley was involved at all or that Alley was dead too if she isn't involved or knew that Bethany didn't go on that trip?"

Maura pondered Jane's words for a moment, "True... but..." She never got to finish the statement because their phones rang in unionism.

"Rizzoli"

"Isles"

I'm on my way." was echoed out as they looked at each other in puzzlement. "Guess we are going to go and see a dead scum bag now." Jane said making reference to the internet cafe owner that Alley had worked for six weeks prior to her death. He had been stabbed and deposited into the dumpster behind the cafe. Maura shook her head in agreement and went to get her bag to ride with Jane to the crime scene.
