A/N Prompt #5 for Fictober
"Lucien?" Jean surveyed the man at the front door. He stood staring at the ground. "What on earth…?"
Lucien interrupted her but didn't lift his eyes from the floor. "I've been fired Jean."
Jean raised her eyebrows. "Well I'm not saying I told you so, but what for this time?"
"Insubordination. Drinking on the job. Not doing what I'm told. Take your pick." Lucien waved a hand about dismissively.
"Well I can't say I'm surprised." Lucien's eyes flew to her and she raised her eyebrows pointedly, "You've been long overdue for a wakeup call. Come on, I'll make us some tea." Jean motioned for Lucien to follow her back into the kitchen but he remained unmoving.
"I just don't understand it Jean."
Jean turned back to him, a small smile playing on her lips. "What? You don't understand your actions have consequences? Come on Lucien, Munro's been after you from the start. He's already called for your resignation, and then there was that whole farce at the Colonists with Jacqueline Maddern…"
"But why doesn't he like me?" Lucien whined.
Jean hid a smile. Lucien was sounding like her boys when they were children in school. "Oh I don't know Lucien, perhaps because you ignore all of the rules and have an absolute disregard for authority?" She raised a cheeky eyebrow at him as he looked at her with astonishment, "Am I wrong?"
Lucien's face softened as he took in her caring smile and his lips twitched. "I guess not" he finally admitted.
Jean smiled at his admission, "Come on, let's go have some tea and wait to see what Matthew has to say about this whole thing."
