First Day of School
Nervous jitters had me rushing through my morning routine. Today was the very first day of high school and my emotions were a wreck. I was going to freaking Yuei! The excitement of following my dreams was overwhelming, but so was the anxiety of what I would have to do to actually achieve that dream.
Nothing good comes without hard work and sacrifice. I just had no idea what I would have to sacrifice and I was never big on making new friends. That's what made me the most nervous, the social interactions.
Taking a deep breath, I focus on my hair, remembering that I already know two people in my class. Well, three, if you count the teacher. I'll have to make sure I don't turn into a fan girl or something equally embarrassing!
I raced down the stairs and fidgeted nervously when Hana and Sora turned to look at me.
"The uniform looks very nice on you, Ren." Hana rushed over and hugged me, then led me to the table for breakfast. Sora watched as I ate, asking me small questions to help me relax.
"Are Shinsou and Bakugo going to walk with you to the campus?" His question was innocent but I knew he was also being protective.
"Yes, they are. The best place for the three of us to meet is at the corner of the game cafe about six blocks from here." He nodded and slid some money my way.
"This is for lunch. I would rather you have cash instead of a card so you can keep up with your weekly spending. I know we've talked about handling money properly and now you'll have to put it in practice without us. You'll do great, kiddo."
I thanked him profusely before mentally doing the math and seeing how much I could spend each day. The Matsun's had always been very open about expenses and how to budget money wisely. I was very grateful to them for trying to teach what my parents obviously never thought of.
It's not like my father ever wanted me to have the knowledge to escape him and mother never had the chance. Running out the door, I bid them farewell, excited to see how the day would play out.
A shock of blond and purple hair were the first things I noticed as I walked up the hill to the cafe. Well, at least their hair is easily recognizable. Purple is hard to miss and they both have the MOST unruly hair. Snickering, I gained their attention, curious as to what Shinsou was showing Bakugo on his phone.
"Fucking finally, squish. You took your sweet ass time." I paused, extremely confused?
"Squish, where the heck did that one come from?" He smirked and leaned into my personal space.
"You make an excellent pillow." Heat engulfed me as I blushed all the way to the roots of my hair.
Shinsou burst out laughing and threw an arm around my shoulders. "I have to agree with him, short stuff. Your lap is quite comfortable."
Before I could melt into a puddle of absolute mortification, Shinsou shoved his phone under my nose. Pushing it back slightly, I instantly started cooing over the adorable box of kittens, missing the smirk Shinsou shot Bakugo.
"Oi, no way in hell we're going to be late for the first day. Let's get a move on, idiots." He grabbed my hand and yanked me forward.
Laughing loudly, I latched onto Shinsou's hand and dragged him along with me.
"Chill, blasty. I like my hand attached and Shinsou likes to stroll, that's why we met a little earlier."
Huffing, he slowed down and we all walked side-by-side, earning a few strange glances from passerbyers. After the third odd look, Bakugo let off an explosion and told everyone to mind their fucking business.
I'm surprised he lasted that long without needing to yell at someone. I think he tries more when he's with us.
"Bakugo," he glanced down at me. "You're trying really hard and I think you've already grown a lot since the entrance exams."
A pink hue tinted his cheeks and he turned away, mumbling about how he didn't give a fuck what all these extras thought. The gates of Yuei came into view and I started bouncing, not being able to contain my excitement.
Shinsou pulled me down and repositioned his arm around my shoulders again. "Ren, stop bouncing all over the damn place. You're gonna piss the Pomeranian off."
Bakugo whirled around and I slapped a hand over his mouth. "He is baiting you, blasty. Let's have a nice calm morning. Shinsou, behave!" He yanked my hand off his mouth and stormed off, shooting Shinsou the bird over his shoulder.
"Hey, that's in my direction too, you jerk," I shout while running up and trying to yank his hand down. He holds it up higher, cackling at how I'm not strong enough to yank his arm down. Taking a step back, I give him a threatening look and raise my hand, quirk slowly pressing down on his finger.
Before either of us could do something stupid, Shinsou yanks me forward and keeps walking. "Come on, Bakugo. You don't want us beating you to the class, do you?" He scoffs and stomps passed us, making me giggle at their antics. I notice a few people giving us amused looks and I duck my head, sliding a little closer to my companion.
"Ren. Everyone is starting a new school year. Even the people who are returning don't know what to expect. We're all in the same boat of institutionalized slavery."
Chortling at his choice of words, I almost missed the looks we received as he slid the door open. Why the heck is the door so freaking large?!
I recognized a few people from the exams and gave them a small smile, relaxing when we were greeted excitedly. Shinsou walked off to his seat as I made small talk with a redhead and a blond with a lightning bolt in his bangs.
"Hey! I'm Kirishima Eijiro! It's nice to see that we have a few cute girls in the class."
"And my name is Kaminari Denki! I like the way you braided the top of your hair and put the rest in a ponytail! It looks sick!"
I floundered slightly, not really being used to such exuberant characters. "Oh, h-hey. It's nice to meet both of you. My name is Ren." Glancing over at Bakugo when they started chattering at me again, I noticed he was in the middle of his own dilemma.
A kid with dark hair and glasses was reprimanding him for having his feet on the desk. I snickered and the two boys talking with me turned to see what had caught my attention. Taking this opportunity to sneak around them, I plopped down in front of Shinsou.
Well I'm still situated between them, Bakugo's just a row over and a chair up. I wonder if Shinsou did this on purpose. Yeah, knowing him, it's definitely plotted.
Suddenly, the door flung open and everyone turned to see the newcomers. It was a boy with wild green hair and based on Bakugo's enraged yell of "DEKU", I guess this was the boy he went to school with.
A girl with round cheeks and brown hair jumped in front of him, talking a mile a minute. That boy is going to faint. I can feel his anxiety from here. I wonder if he's ever talked to a girl before.
A flick to the back of my neck had me whirling around and growling at the lavender eyes boring holes into my head. "What the HECK was that for, Shinsou?"
The smirk on his face only infuriated me more. "At least you're not that socially awkward, short stack." Before I could lunge across his table and strangle him, Bakugo cleared his throat. I whirled around and instantly noticed a yellow sleeping bag slinking across the room.
What the actual heck? The boy behind me huffed and I realized that the human caterpillar had to be Eraserhead.
Slowly, all eyes turned towards the spectacle as he unzipped his sleeping bag and stepped out. "It took the majority of you far too long to notice my presence," his glare was louder than his words.
"Change into these and meet me outside." Everyone hustled to comply, not wanting to irritate him further.
I quickly learned the names of the girls in my class seeing as they all wanted to ask me about why I was yelling at Shinsou. "We were friends before we came to Yuei and he was acting dumb."
"Oooohhh," Mina trilled. "You mean he was flirting with you!" She wiggled her eyebrows and nudged me.
"Ugh, I don't know about all that. He was just being a boy. We're honestly just friends." I grumbled, earning knowing looks from Mina and Yaoyorozu, and possibly Hagakure but that was hard to distinguish. Ochako gave me a sympathetic look, understanding since they had just given her the same treatment about Deku.
Walking up to the group of boys, I placed myself between my two soulmates, not missing the way they easily shifted for me. It's like we've been doing this for ages. Who would have known the bond would have such a quick effect on us? Not that I'm complaining.
My thoughts were interrupted by Mr. Aizawa cutting through all the small talk, once again agitated that we all took so long.
"You aren't here to make friends or find your soulmate. You're here to become heroes. This isn't just a career. Lives will be on the line, including your own."
The group was deathly quiet, only nervous shifting could be heard. "We are going to have a quirk apprehension test. The person to place last will be expelled."
Protests could be heard from many people and I zoned out, knowing he wasn't actually going to fail anyone. I feel bad for the people who actually fall for this psychological bullcrap. Then again, I bet many of them haven't had experience with this type of situation.
"Bakugo. How far could you throw a ball in school?"
"About 67 meters," he stated calmly.
"This time, I want you to use your quirk. Anything goes as long as you stay in the circle." Mr. Aizawa sounded tired and looked like he wanted to be napping more than anything right now.
Bakugo smirked and caught the ball thrown his way. Entering the circle, he pulled back for the pitch.
"DIE!"
BOOM!
Jumping, I slapped my hands over my ears, glaring at the smirking boy approaching me.
"705.2 meters," Mr. Aizawa states, letting that sink in. "This is your starting point," he stated blandly and, with that, the test began. We had eight physical tests we had to complete and even though I knew I wouldn't get expelled, I still wanted to see my true baseline. I want to be able to track my growth.
I was just kind of people watching, noticing how terrible the boy with the freckles was doing, when Bakugo angrily flicked me in the forehead. "Oh, Bakugo! What the heck is up with you and Shinsou flicking me today?!"
"Why the fuck are you staring at Deku?" The fury in his voice had me contemplating my options. Give him all the sass back and start a fight or placate the agitated male.
I could see people staring at us and I didn't want to cause any more of a scene so I chose option two. Lowering my voice, I grabbed his shoulder and pulled him down to my level.
"First off, calm down, sparky. You know I hate attention. Secondly, I was just noticing how horrible he's doing. It's like he isn't using his quirk for anything."
"That's because he doesn't have a fucking quirk, moron. Don't you remember what I told you?" He didn't lower his voice at all and I gave Deku, who I realized was actually name Midoriya, an apologetic smile. It was obvious he was used to Bakugo's treatment by the look he gave the blond.
"Wait," Kirishima approached us, throwing an arm over Bakugo's shoulder. "Dude he totally took out a zero pointer. Totally broke his arms and legs!" Predictably, his arm was thrown off and Bakugo was about to go on a rampage.
I jerked him to the side and ran my hands up and down on his bare arms. When he tried to escape, I used my quirk to keep him in place.
"Not now, sparky."
"Let me the fuck go before I blow you the fuck up!"
"Nope. You need to diffuse. I don't want you doing something that you'll regret later."
He paused and looked at me, really looked at me. "Let. Me. The. Fuck. Go." I tilted my head, assessing his anger.
"Are you going to attack him?"
"FUCK! No, I'm not going to attack the fucking Deku. Now let me go you damn human shield!" I complied and he almost fell backwards. I yanked him forward and immediately regretted that decision. His chest smashed straight into my nose making me gasp in pain, instantly clutching my now bleeding nose.
"Bakugo?" Mr. Aizawa's calm yet terrifying voice appeared out of nowhere. I jumped in before either of them could really get a grasp on the situation.
"Oh, it's not actually his fault Eras-Mr. Aizawa. I'm actually to blame for this entire situation. May I go to the nurse? I don't think this is going to stop anytime soon." Tears were slowly leaking from my eyes, making me look absolutely pitiful.
Shinsou walked up behind me, purposely bumping into Bakugo's shoulder. "I'll take her to see Recovery Girl."
A gentle hand was placed on the small of my back and I was led to the nurse's office, sighing as my pain was reduced because of the bond.
