Hey guys I hope you all enjoy this chapter. In which Leo shows that he's a brainy boy.
Undeath9087: Jason's just like 'how is this my life? I'm glad I don't gotta be in charge of this shit show. And I shall count your vote.
Lavender: I have counted your vote!
The Official Clarisse: Leo is definitely more humorous than most- and yeah, no way was Percy letting Leo keep blaming himself for his moms death- of course now he kinda blames himself for Percy's death but I mean, what can I say I enjoy pain.
Constantine: Your vote has been counted.
Guest: There would definitely still be problems with the Roman Greek relationship I agree with that. It's going to be interesting either way how that affects Percy and someone who is both. As for your questions- yes Bianca is mortal and can age now. And I really can't say too much because spoilers. Sorry about that but I have to be careful.
Guest: I get what you're saying and I shall count your vote!
JjlovesPjo: Your vote has been counted.
Black' Victor Cachat: The poll is for the two options I mentioned a few chaps ago for the Roman AU, Option 1 is Percy and Jason childhood best friends, Option 2 is Percy and Octavian childhood friends, with nicer Octavian and a rivalry with Jason.
Guest: There will be no Christmas 1 shot. I'm afraid. The Minific will be starting at the end of March and Finish a couple of days into April- I wonder who can figure out what it's about.
Poll:
Option 1: 5
Option 2: 3
Jason was painfully grateful when he'd spotted Leo flying to their rescue with Festus- he was still drained from the whole catching Leo and Piper and fighting the winds and then crashing situation- and the winds still didn't seem to fond of him, and while Leo and Festus were fine, that was because Festus was a lot bigger, and a lot harder to knock off course with a rough blast, Jason had been struggling to keep himself and Piper aloft and away from the Cyclops's, especially with the way they'd been throwing things at them.
Honestly, he wasn't sure how Leo did it- Jason felt like he was trapped in a nightmare. The only reason he was doing as well as he was was the presence of Piper and Leo- he really did like them both. Piper seemed just as uncertain as he was- that was comforting, weirdly enough, knowing he wasn't the only one lost- even if a part of him felt like he really shouldn't be.
And Leo. Gods but Leo was a lifesaver. Jason knew this was supposed to be his quest but he was just so confused half of the time- it felt good to have someone else he could depend on- for some reason he felt like he wasn't used to that- to being able to let someone else take over. Especially when it was so chaotic- but he had the feeling he'd have to get used to that.
He got the feeling that he was usually expected to be the one in Leo's place, taking control and leading- he was pretty sure it was something to do with who his dad was. Like, people respected him and saw him as a leader purely because his dad was king of the gods- which was weird because it didn't seem to be like that at Camp Half-blood- they all clearly respected Thalia but Luke was a son of Hermes and he was one of the leaders too so it didn't seem like she was automatically expected to be the leader of things.
So yeah, it felt weirdly good to have someone else take the lead, to have someone he could depend on. Especially someone like Leo who had years of experience- Leo was a pretty good leader as far as Jason was concerned- he'd handled things with Piper really well.
In any case, Leo's rescue couldn't have been timed anymore perfectly than it had been, and once they were safely on the dragons back and strapped in Jason let the tension seep out of his shoulders.
It didn't take long for Jason to start drifting off- after all Leo had slept earlier and Jason was well beyond exhausted, he hadn't slept that well the night before- he'd been worried and stressed, and it had been a pretty long day. So he let himself slump forward slightly- barely noticing when his head dropped forward and his forehead ended up resting on Piper's shoulder.
When he opened his eyes again he found himself standing in an earthen cage. Tendrils of tree roots and stone whirled together, confining him. Outside the bars, he could see the floor of a dry reflecting pool, another earthen spire growing at the far end, and above them, the ruined red stones of a burned-out house.
Next to him in the cage, a woman sat cross-legged in black robes, her head covered by a shroud. She pushed aside her veil, revealing a face that was proud and beautiful—but also hardened with suffering.
"Hera," Jason said.
"Welcome to my prison," said the goddess. "You're safe enough in the hands of my other hero while you sleep. For now in any case." Hera gestured at the tendrils of her cage.
"There are worse trials to come. The very earth stirs against us. "
"You're a goddess," Jason said. "Why can't you just escape?"
Hera smiled sadly. Her form began to glow, until her brilliance filled the cage with painful light. The air hummed with power, molecules splitting apart like a nuclear explosion.
Jason suspected if he were actually there in the flesh, he would've been vaporized.
The cage should've been blasted to rubble. The ground should've split and the ruined house should've been levelled. But when the glow died, the cage hadn't budged. Nothing outside the bars had changed. Only Hera looked different—a little more stooped and tired.
"Some powers are even greater than the gods," she said. "I am not easily contained. I can be in many places at once. But when the greater part of my essence is caught, it is like a foot in a bear trap, you might say. I can't escape, and I am concealed from the eyes of the other gods. Only you can find me, and I grow weaker by the day. "
"Then why did you come here?" Jason asked. "How were you caught?"
The goddess sighed. "I could not stay idle. Your father Jupiter believes he can withdraw from the world, and thus lull our enemies back to sleep. He believes we Olympians have become too involved in the affairs of mortals, in the fates of our demigod children, especially since we agreed to claim them all after the war thanks to the Jackson boy.
He believes this is what has caused our enemies to stir. That is why he closed Olympus."
"But you don't agree. "
"No," she said. "Often I do not understand my husband's moods or his decisions, but even for Zeus, this seemed paranoid. I cannot fathom why he was so insistent and so convinced. It was … unlike him. As Hera, I might have been content to follow my lord's wishes. But I am also Juno. " Her image flickered, and Jason saw armor under her simple black robes, a goatskin cloak—the symbol of a Roman warrior—across her bronze mantle. "Juno Moneta they once called me—Juno, the One Who Warns. I was guardian of the state, patron of Eternal Rome. I could not sit by while the descendants of my people were attacked. I sensed danger at this sacred spot. A voice—" She hesitated. "A voice told me I should come here. Gods do not have what you might call a conscience, nor do we have dreams; but the voice was like that—soft and persistent, warning me to come here. And so the same day Zeus closed Olympus, I slipped away without telling him my plans, so he could not stop me. And I came here to investigate. "
"It was a trap," Jason guessed.
The goddess nodded. "Only too late did I realize how quickly the earth was stirring. I was even more foolish than Jupiter—a slave to my own impulses. This is exactly how it happened the first time. I was taken captive by the giants, and my imprisonment started a war. Now our enemies rise again. The gods can only defeat them with the help of the greatest living heroes, the seven with be the most important of those heroes- yourself, young Leo, the daughter of Aphrodite, Athena's brat, and three others. And the one whom the giants serve …she cannot be defeated at all—only kept asleep."
"You-" Jason's eyes were wide, "We know who's rising I- Athena's brat- that's Annabeth isn't it? She's one of the Seven. Why was she not sent on this quest too-"
"Because this quest was meant for you three, besides the girl would never agree to help me. She is too prideful, and too angered by the past. And by what I did to young Leo too of course, I made them worry." Hera rolled her eyes, "Not that that's important. I did what needed to be done."
"I'm not sure I agree." Jason muttered the words.
"You will soon," Hera said.
The cage began to constrict, the tendrils spiraling tighter. Hera's form shivered like a candle flame in the breeze. Outside the cage, Jason could see shapes gathering at the edge of the pool—lumbering humanoids with hunched backs and bald heads. Unless Jason's eyes were tricking him—they had more than one set of arms. He heard wolves too, but not the wolves he'd seen with Lupa. He could tell from their howls this was a different pack—hungrier, more aggressive, out for blood.
"Hurry, Jason," Hera said. "My keepers approach, and you begin to wake. I will not be strong enough to appear to you again, even in dreams. "
"Wait," he said. "Boreas told us you'd made a dangerous gamble. What did he mean?"
Hera's eyes looked wild, and Jason wondered if she really had done something crazy. And he couldn't help but thinking it would have to be really big if it was crazier than kidnapping Leo- who's entire camp seemed to adore him. It was probably a good thing that Leo had been left fairly intact, they'd have been out from blood.
"An offering," she said. "The only way to bring peace. The enemy counts on our divisions, and if we are divided, we will be destroyed. You are my peace offering, Jason, you will a bridge meant to overcome millennia of hatred. If things were different perhaps- but no... you will have to find a way alone."
"What? I don't—"
"I cannot tell you more," Hera said. "You have only lived this long because I have taken your memory. Find this place. Return to your starting point. The Wolf House. Your sister will help. You will find Drachma's in your pocket- though young Leo is bound to have them too. He will teach you how to send an Iris Message. Or perhaps the hunters may be able to help you."
"Thalia-"
"You should have spoken to her about your dream." Hera's voice was almost chiding, "Now I must go."
The scene began to dissolve. "Good-bye, Jason. Beware Chicago. Your most dangerous mortal enemy waits there. If you are to die, it will be by her hand. "
"Who?" he demanded.
But Hera's image faded, and Jason awoke with a start, almost headbutting Piper, who laughed.
"Woah there Sparky." her voice was a mix of fond affection and amusement, "You were conked out for a while there, do you feel okay?"
"I think so." Jason let out a slow slightly shaky breath, his brows furrowing, "Hera summoned me in a dream-"
"Oooh." Leo let out a low whistle, "Those dreams suck. Like, surely there's a better way to get out attention than to just butt into our dreams-"
"They really do." Jason's lips twitched slightly, "But they can be kind of helpful sometimes." he took a deep breath before launching into an explanation of his dream- and he was grateful for the fact that his friends both listened carefully as he talked, and afterwards Leo was sat, a thoughtful look on his face.
"A bridge" he said once Jason was finished, "I think I'm starting to figure something out and I dunno if I like it."
"What are you figuring out?" Piper tilted her head, a curious look on her face.
"I think- and hear me out here- think about the whole weird thing with Boreas- he literally changed when he saw Jason's tattoo- and he went by his Roman name. So, what if-
what if they really are different, like, Zeus and Jupiter- Jason he said you were the son of Jupiter right."
"Yeah." Jason nodded, "Yeah he did."
"Well, if they do have two like, distinct forms or whatever- then what if they're different enough that there's difference with their kids? What if there's a camp for Roman kids like there is a camp for Greek kids?" and Jason felt a sharp pain and he winced, pressing a hand to his head- he should know that. He should know he was sure of it- everything Leo was saying was so familiar.
"Okay, based on your reaction Leo might be right." Piper's brows furrowed, "But why wouldn't the camps know about each other-"
"Maybe they're now allowed to. Chiron seemed real worried about Jason being with us and Boreas seemed amused- what if Greeks and Romans don't go well-"
"We've been getting on pretty well." Jason pointed out, "I mean-"
"Yeah, but it might not usually be like this for most Romans and Greeks- which would mean-" Leo's brows furrowed, "So you were sent to us to form a friendship- that seems kinda onesided. Which is weird right?"
"Once this is over we'll figure it out." Jason promised, "I'll do everything I can to help you. Even if I don't understand it at all now."
"We'll figure it out." Piper spoke firmly, "We'll get your memories back and we'll figure it out. We'll do it together." and Jason met Leo's eyes, and they exchanged smiles.
He wasn't sure how they'd do it. But they would.
