Welcome back to Fate's Bounty! This is our final prologue before we get to meet our first set of tributes! I'm so excited to get this story going, I have very high hopes and cannot wait to put things into motion! Please enjoy this brief update! It's almost time.
Xanthe looked down at her wristwatch, anticipation consuming her. It was finally Reaping Day. Her first Reaping Day as Head Gamemaker. This was a moment she had been waiting for for quite some time now. She thought about the arena she had so carefully created, and she was just a few weeks away from having her hard work put on display for all of Panem to see.
But first, it was time to see the sacrifices who would die there. She sat down on a plush seat in the Gamemakers Quarters, staring at the monitor in front of her. A few of her colleagues were dispersed around her, but she didn't bother with small talk - the Reapings had all of her attention. The other Gamemakers were beneath her anyways. Not worth her time.
She watched as Ambriel and Lady Q appeared on screen, starting off with the Pre-Reaping events. A countdown to the first Reaping was visible behind them.
"Welcome to the 197th Annual Hunger Games!" Ambriel exclaimed, beaming at the camera, her stupid tiara on her head as always.
Xanthe glared at Ambriel's figure on the monitor. She couldn't stand that woman already, and just from their recent interview Xanthe could tell she was an unintelligent airhead. Again, another person unworthy of her time.
Xanthe's time was important to her. She knew she wasn't technically the most powerful person in the nation, but she sure felt like it. Eden Snow was already shaping up to be a pathetic leader in Xanthe's eyes. He may have the Capitol fooled for now, but not her. But Xanthe didn't really care. She was content in her role as Head Gamemaker for now. It allowed her to show her genius, as well as get out her twisted desires she kept buried deep within.
Lady Q's voice brought Xanthe's attention back to the broadcast. She looked at the older woman, who looked fairly young for age, probably in part due to the large array of cosmetic products the Capitol had to offer. Her short hair was done up in an elaborate bun, and she was wearing a sparkly magenta coat with a modest and plain white dress underneath. Magenta was Lady Q's signature color so Xanthe was not surprised by her outfit.
"What are your expectations for this year's games?" The older woman asked her youthful counterpart. Xanthe listened intently for Ambriel's response.
"I think they are going to be fantastic!" Ambriel shouted happily. "I'm sure Head Gamemaker Xanthe has the best arena we've ever seen planned out!"
Xanthe wanted to throw up at her statement. The way Ambriel said it was laced with fake enthusiasm and her voice was coated with sugary venom.
Oh, I'll show you. If only I could throw her in the damn arena. Xanthe thought darkly. But Xanthe wasn't going to let someone as dense as Ambriel ruin this day for her. Besides, there were plenty of others who would be thrown in the arena, and she was soon going to see who they were.
As if on queue, Lady Q's voice rang out on the broadcast. "The countdown for the Reapings is officially over! Up first; District One!"
Slowly, the image of the two women faded away and was replaced by an aerial shot of District One, the early morning sun rising in the background.
The New Age was here.
I hope you enjoyed this last prologue! I know it was short, but I promise this is the end of short updates! Now that we are diving into meeting the tributes next chapter, updates will be longer and I'm very excited to get to writing!
