Mo was in the kitchen late at night calmly looking for a cook book. There was a smoothie recipe she wanted to try but she couldn't remember the exact amount of raspberry needed.

I need to start writing down these recipes in a notebook, Mo thought as she dug through the shelf in frustration.

Mo decided that it might have been in the other cabinet. As she walked over, her ears briefly turned to the table and noticed two small pieces of paper. Curious, Mo picked them up and realized they were airline tickets. The name of an airline Mo had never heard of was at the top, and Mo's parents were listed as the passengers on a flight scheduled two days in the future.

First Class

From: Elwood City

To: Miami

Gate: 783

Seat: 14C

Terminal: 6

Mo dropped the tickets in disgust. It was obvious why her parents would be flying. Elwood City wasn't even the closest airport to West Falls, so Mo assumed the mafia had business to take care of in both cities.

She could already envision the lie her parents would tell. They would say they had a "business trip" to attend for a few days, would claim it was in a city other than than Miami, and would probably neglect to mention they would be stopping in Elwood City on the way. They would know that she doesn't believe a word of it, but everyone would still pretend that nothing was wrong.

Oh well, best to forget about it. She wouldn't tell Arthur. After all, there were supposed to pretend they knew nothing.

"Now, let's talk about empathy," Dr. Paula instructed the group. "D.W., do you know what empathy is?"

"Um, being polite?" D.W. guessed.

"That certainly is a part of it," Dr. Paula responded appreciatively, "but there's more to it than that. Empathy is essentially feeling care towards other people. Can you recall someone you care about a lot, D.W.?"

"Hmm. Let's see. Nadine, Kate, Pal - " D.W. answered.

"Who is Nadine?" Dr. Paula asked. "You never mentioned her before."

D.W. thought carefully about how she would answer. She knew that responding "Well, she's an old friend of mine who only I can see" would sound crazy.

"Oh, just someone I used to know."

"All right. What about you, Vanessa?"

"My babysitter, Courtney," Vanessa responded.

"The one you threw down the stairs?" Lerone asked cynically.

"Well, yeah, I wish I hadn't done that," Vanessa's tone was somber. "But I only did that because the voices made me. Before that, we got along like sisters!"

D.W. rolled her eyes at this comment.

"Don't be so high and mighty," Vanessa snapped back, "at least Courtney didn't die from her fall."

"What about you, Lerone?" Dr. Paula asked quickly.

"My pet rabbit, Turtle."

"Why did you name him after another animal?" D.W. couldn't help but ask.

"I thought it fit his personality."

Dr. Paula scribbled down responses on her clipboard. "Empathy is very important. By feeling the pain of another person, it helps us treat other people with love and respect. It also avoids conflicts, and makes us realize when we've done wrong."

"You mean guilt and regret?" Vanessa asked.

"Exactly," Dr. Paula said. "Now take a few seconds to think of something you deeply regret."

D.W. at first thought of fire, Thora's death, and the destruction of her family. But then she realized she had another regret.

She regretted she never got to see Mary Moo Cow Visits Italy.

"Now, again, who are you?"

"My name is Regina K. Johnson," the girl formerly known as Muffy Crosswire answered. "I live in Lihue, Hawaii. My address is 542 Sunset Avenue."

Muffy wasn't sure exactly where she was. She was no longer in Elwood City, but she had not reached Hawaii yet. This building was mysterious, heavily armed, and surrounded by a gate informing people it was government property and they should keep out. Muffy had passed on the plane ride, but when she up she noticed there was of desert. Was she in Nevada?

Wherever this was, it was just a pit stop until her new life was fully formed. She and a Marshal, who simply called himself Jim, had been practicing with cue cards the details of her new identity for the last several hours.

Jim nodded in approval, "Excellent. Your getting better at this."

Muffy sighed. "I still feel like I'm just acting. And I'm not a very good actress."

"You feel that way for a while," he responded, "but after a while, Muffy will seem like just a dream."

Muffy picked up her glass of water and nervously took a gulp of the cold liquid. "I'm pretty nervous about meeting my new... parents that I'll have now. Are they some kind of agents?"

"I'm not at liberty to answer."

Muffy snorted. "That's a yes, then."

"It won't be so bad. Lihue is beautiful. Certainly better than being in the midst of several drug rings."

"Your right," Muffy admitted. "But I don't like it."

"Nobody likes it at first," the Marshal responded, "but most people are eventually able to become their new identities to point they virtually forget the old."

Ben and Loretta had returned home just before midnight.

"Mo, can we talk to you for a second?"

"Sure, what's up?" Mo asked. But she knew perfectly well this was about the mob vacation they were apparently going on.

"You father and I will be leaving tomorrow for a business trip for the next few days," Loretta responded. "So make sure you take good care of Arthur and Kate while we're gone."

Of course, Mo thought, a "business trip". "Where are you going?" she asked calmly. Miami, perhaps?

"Washington D.C. for about three days," Ben responded.

Lie number two, Mo thought angrily. "Are you going anywhere else on the way?"

"Oh, no," Loretta responded, "just to D.C. then back."

Lie number three. "What airport are you taking?" Could it be, say, Elwood City?

"The one over in the Valley," Ben answered. And that made lie number four.

"Well, I'll be sure to watch over Arthur and Kate while your gone. I'll take excellent care of them, in fact."

Loretta frowned, and for a second Mo thought she realized the comment was an attack at them for letting children be raised in this kind of a place. Loretta then put on a overly cheery face. "Of course you will, Mo. Our business depends on nothing less."

Mo's stomach sank at that remark.

"Anyway, we're going to go prepare for our trip," Ben announced, "good night, Mo."

"Good night, everyone," Mo responded as she walked to her room, wondering how she would sleep.
