Gray had to go on a short mission, and he said he would be back in time for graduation. He didn't show up on the day of, and there was no one at Frankenstein's house, meaning they were still out wherever it is they had left for.
"Sorry, we didn't get to meet Gray this time around. But we definitely are looking forward to meeting him next time we come back."
"Sure thing, mom. I'm going to miss you guys. I have to be an adult now and find a job."
"At least you still have the tutoring at the school. That pays pretty well, right?"
"They'll go on break soon. But don't worry. If I ever run low on money, I'll just hit up the good ol' ATM…I mean my precious father who loves me so so much."
"I'm vetoing that joke."
"I feel like that was a quality joke compared to what I've heard from both of you."
"But yours hurt my feelings."
"Nice try, dad. I am immune to guilt."
"I was hoping your time here would soften you up a little bit."
"I've been living with Shin. Those guilty eyes do not work on me at all."
"Worth a try. Anyway, we have to go check-in. Goodbye for now, Sunny!"
"Goodbye, for now, mom. Goodbye for now, dad!"
"Tell your boyfriend he better be here the next time we come to visit."
"Oh, I definitely will tell him that."
"And try to get more sleep. You look way older than your actual age with those feed bags under your eyes. I didn't give you your good looks to waste them." Mom said.
"See…now that one hurt. But it's a good thing I don't have school, and all my jobs are on the internet. I will be getting all the sleep now." I waved them off and took a cab back home.
"What are you guys not telling me?" I barked at Tao and Takeo. They hadn't seen me come in and were startled.
"Hey, Sunny. Nice to see you here. You came with the other kids, huh? That's good. We were missing you over here." Tao said to me.
"Let's step outside for a moment, shall we?" I told both of them. I hadn't heard from Gray in three weeks since they had left for the job and only found out from the kids that everyone in Frankenstein's house had returned a week earlier. I led them to the backyard and closed the door. "Ok. So let me ask this again. Where is M-21, and what are you not telling me?" They both widened their eyes with surprise. "Yeah. I know. He cleared up a few things for me. Does this have anything to do with his old job? Did they get him?"
"He just stayed a bit longer for the job we were working." Tao sputtered, then chuckled nervously.
"I know that's bullshit. You can tell me what happened. I prepared myself for something like this ever since he told me that his old job was looking for him. I knew he didn't have a normal life. I just need you guys to be honest with me."
"What did he tell you about the work we do?"
"Nothing specific. Just that you take small jobs on the side every once in a while."
"First off, we know he's alive, so don't worry about that. And he's good at his job, so he will stay alive." I started tearing up.
"On this last job, we were following a couple of people, and something must have happened with whoever he was following. We only found his crushed earpiece meaning he was taken, not killed. We're doing everything we can to find him, so don't worry about it."
"Don't worry about it? My boyfriend went missing while doing god knows what, and you want me to not worry about it?" I sobbed.
"We're doing everything we can to find him. He's like our brother, and we won't stop until we do find him."
"Just find him."
"We will, Sunny."
"Is Mr. Frankenstein home?"
"Somewhere in the house."
"I promised Gray that I'd ask Mr. Frankenstein to check me out if I was still tired all the time. Do you mind finding him? I'll stay out here for a bit longer. I don't want the kids to see me like this."
"Ok."
Mr. Frankenstein led me to an underground lab he had in the house.
"M-21 shared this part of his life with you, so there's no need to hide it."
"Ok, but when he said you help them out when they get hurt, I thought it was a cozy little room. Not a huge lab like this."
"Well, studying human biology was a passion of mine, so I am very well versed in it."
"Uh-huh…" I was still awed by the size of the lab.
"What seems to be the problem?"
"Nothing that requires this big lab."
"Mi-Sun. Let's focus."
"Oh! Right! I have been a bit sleep-deprived for the past, maybe a month and a half. I think it's just my body adjusting to a regular, stress-free schedule, but M-21 said that I should still ask you to check it out if I was still feeling tired…Ummm…two weeks ago."
"Very well. I'll start with checking your blood and go from there. I'll let you know if I need anything more."
"Ok."
"In the meantime, try to see if you can go back to the same activity levels you were doing before you were done with school."
"Oh. Yeah. I suppose I could lay off the crap Shin eats too. I probably should have taken my expanding waistline as a hint."
"It could just be your body reacting to the rapid switch from a highly active lifestyle to an almost sedentary one."
"Thank you for coming to see me, Mi-Sun. I was able to run some tests on your blood. I don't know how to put this, but I guess I will give it a shot." He had called me back to his office at Ye Ran after the tutoring session was done.
"Oh, god! Am I dying?"
"No. Nothing like that." He gave me a closed-eyes smile. "Looks like in a couple of months, you get to be a mother."
"Huh?"
"This sounds like it will be a nice little homecoming surprise for M-21. That's great, right?"
"I'm pregnant?"
"Yes. Congratulations."
"Shit." I sat down on the couch, gaping in my surprise and looking at nothing in particular. I had the thought in my head of whether Gray would be coming back. I felt like I was suffocating and began hyperventilating.
"Mi-Sun. Take a deep breath and calm down. Inhale and slowly exhale." He tried to calm me down.
"I am not ready for this. I am so not ready for this. I just graduated from school. I don't have a job yet. Gray is missing. I am not ready for this." I keep repeating.
"No need to panic at the moment. We are doing everything we can to find his location. And in the meantime, try to think of us as an extended family. You can always come to us if you need help with anything. We would be more than happy to assist you."
"I just need to process this for a minute." I lay down on the couch and covered my eyes with my arm. I sat up again. "I just became an adult less than two months ago, and already I'm getting thrown deep into adulthood. I suppose this is what I get for being reckless. I'm not mad that I am having a kid. I just think this has to be the worst timing in the world." I lay back down in silence as I talked myself through it. "Maybe it's not such a bad thing. He did say he wanted a normal life. What's more normal than changing diapers and wiping baby vomit off your work pants every day."
"There is another matter I need to discuss with you."
"Uh-huh…"
"How much did M-21 tell you of the previous agency he worked for?"
"Not much. Just general stuff. Private security firm, I think. And he was an agent?"
"Given the current circumstances, it is best if you know this sooner rather than later."
"What? Is his old company going to come for me or something?"
"It is within the realm of possibilities. Before becoming an agent in his previous company, he was used as an experimental subject for human body modification."
"What does that mean? Something is wrong with the baby?"
"Not necessarily. It depends on how you look at it. There are two types of modifications that were done by his company before he became an agent. One was altering the body with robotics and mechanicals. The other was an attempt to alter the body genetically. What he underwent was a mix of both. Over time, his body began changing, and currently, you could compare his abilities and his biology to what you would call werewolves."
"Uh-huh…"
"As unbelievable as it may seem, this is the case. With that, his changes were embedded in his DNA, meaning he may pass on certain traits. Unless we are absolutely sure, I would like to ask if you would allow me to monitor your progress."
"You want me to let you be my doctor?"
"Yes. His former company, as you know, is aware of your existence and the nature of your relationship. If they were to find this out, you and the child you carry may be in danger. There is a chance that this is the first child born from a modified human and might hold extreme value to them. They may also use the both of you as leverage to get him to work for them again." Having Mr. Frankenstein do that would eliminate the medical costs associated with going to the doctor. And Gray did say that Mr. Frankenstein helps them. Looking at the size of the lab and the nature of their job, he probably does a lot to help them, especially if they are injured. He probably would have all the equipment needed.
"I suppose I can. Have you handled this type of thing before?"
"Not quite. My knowledge in this expertise would be based on what I learned about the human body. I also do have the necessary equipment to provide you with a more thorough analysis than what you would receive from a standard hospital."
"I guess. I suppose for you, this would also be something to study."
"You have nothing to worry about, Mi-Sun."
"Ok. I think I'll go now. I need to call my parents. Don't worry. I'll skip the werewolf part of this."
"Let us know if you need anything."
