There is a massive trading card game name known all across the world.

It goes by the name of Vanguard.

Millions of people of all ages and races play the game.

But what most don't know is that vanguard is much more than just a game.

I know this sounds familiar and you think you've heard it all before. But trust me, you haven't.

For this is not the story you know.

This is my story.

One which I hope you will all enjoy.

"Alright students, that's all for today," the teacher said signaling the end of class.

When he did the students began to pack up their belongings, leaving the room to head off to other activities, like after school clubs or just to hang out with friends.

But of the many students in the classroom one was different than the rest.

It was a male, his age sixteen years old from the looks of him. He has short dark brown hair and emerald green eyes, hidden behind black square rimmed glasses, which he was currently adjusting to keep on his face. He was also stretching and yawning since the young man had just woken up from a quick nap.

His name, Anthony Blackwell.

Most would think that Anthony would get in trouble for sleeping in class, but since it was the last class of the day and he was pulling an A in it the teacher didn't see any problems in letting it slide. A gesture Anthony was extremely grateful for and one he did not take for granted.

Having completed his stretching and now fully awake Anthony reached for his bag, preparing to leave the classroom when a voice called out to him.

"Yo Anthony, wanna go to the arcade today?"

Anthony turned his head toward the voice to see two familiar faces.

The first was a male his age. He sported straight blonde hair to just above his shoulders with intermixed dark brown strands along with blue eyes. His attire currently consisting of the school uniform in the boys version, which was black pants, a white blazer trimmed with gold lining, a white shirt and brown dress shoes, the same as Anthony.

His name is Eric Luzin, one of Anthony's best friends and the one who just called out to him about going to the arcade.

The second person coming up to Anthony's desk is female. She is his age, sporting straight light brown hair that stops just above her shoulders, with two bangs dyed hot pink framing her face, her eyes a light pink. She is dressed in the girl version of the school uniform, the only difference being a skirt. She is also short, standing only 5'1.

Her name is Sylvia Kellens, another one of Anthony's best friends.

Turning to Eric and Syliva Anthony said, "Sorry, I can't go today." He took out his phone. "My dad just texted me. Seems Virgil skipped out on work today and with my mom gone this week he needs help," he explained to his friends.

They both nodded.

"Alright then good luck." Eric said. "Guess it'll just be me and Sylvia then."

"In your dreams you pervert." Syliva said in a deadpan voice towards Eric.

Eric is in fact a bit of a pervert. He is also a playboy, leaving Anthony to wonder how his friend hadn't lost any important bits yet despite his playing the field all the time. The only conclusion he could come up with is that despite his behavior on the inside Eric is generally a good person.

"Ouch," Eric playfully said, holding his chest, "Sylvia that hurt. Why so cruel?"

"You know why." Sylvia said, to Eric in a deadpan tone once again.

Watching the whole thing Anthony could only smile at his friend's usual banter.

Anthony always found it a new adventure everyday, walking down the streets of his hometown Los Angeles, California.

Having left school he arrived at his destination in no time.

It was a cardshop. More specifically the card shop owned by his family that goes by the name; Cardshop Victory.

Entering through the front of the shop Anthony saw his father behind the counter, wearing the store uniform.

His name is Blake Blackwell and like Anthony he has dark brown hair, but unlike him he sports blue eyes and doesn't wear any glasses. That is a trait Anthony got from his mother.

Spotting Anthony as he walked into the sop Blake smiled. "Anthony, thank god you're here."

"Jeez dad, exaggerating a bit aren't we?" Anthony asked his father who shook his head.

"No son, I'm not." Blake said. "There's no time to explain at the moment, just please go get changed, there's a note in the back explaining what I want you to begin doing as soon as you do."

"Sure thing." Anthony said, giving his father a mock salute. He then moved into the back room and went to his locker, finding the note pasted to the front just as his father said it would be.

Taking the note down Anthony began to skim its contents while he got changed for work, only to stop in the middle of changing and read the list from start to finish. When Anthony was done he released a heavy sigh, cursing his little brother with all his might.

Anthony is doing this because on the list he had received from his father were a number of tasks his brother should've completed already prior in the week. Namely; stocking the new booster card packs, dusting the store, and making sure the trash in the store room was moved to the garbage can in the back before pickup day.

All of these things should've been done already. Which is why Anthony vowed that when he saw his brother again he would make him pay.

That done, he finished changing into his work uniform and got to work.

"Thank you, come again." Anthony said, waving and smiling at a young boy and mother as they exited through the front of Victory. When they were gone Anthony released a heavy sigh, moving over to the counter he leaned on it for support.

Because he was tired.

For in addition to doing the work his brother Virgil decided to blow off Anthony also had to help his father manage the customers. Usually that would not be the case, but today was the release of many expansion booster packs, causing an influx of customers that only came about once a month.

Needless to say Anthony was ready to go home and fall into bed.

An option he would soon have from the looks of the sky outside.

It was dusk, meaning only a bit longer and he and his father would close up the shop for the day.

That in mind Anthony pushed himself up off the counter and got back to work, deciding to finish it properly.

But just as he was about to go back to sweeping, the bell to the shop chimed, signaling to Anthony that someone had just entered the shop. Turning to help said person Anthony found himself face to face with a girl.

She was his age give or take a year. Her hair was cyan, in a single ponytail that went down to her mid-back, her eyes matching the color of her hair. She was dressed in black sleeveless dress, a cyan colored jacket over her arms, with black ankle-length boots on her feet.

The girl having entered the store Anthony found himself mesmerized by her. He had no idea why but as soon as he laid eyes on her a strange feeling overtook his person. He couldn't explain what was happening to him at all.

"-me. Excuse me. Excuse me are you ok?"

"W-what?" Anthony said. Snapping out of his daze he found the mysterious girl right in front of his face.

"I asked if you're ok? You seem to be spacing out there, so I wanted to know if you're ok. Do I need to call an ambulance or anything?"

"N-no," Anthony said, shaking his head. "I'm fine, thank you for asking."

"No problem." The girl said. She took a step back from Anthony after making sure he was fine. "Now then, from the looks of you you work at the store?"

Anthony nodded. "That's right. My family actually owns it. My name is Anthony, and you are?"

"Nina Miller. Thanks for asking." Nina said, Anthony nodding.

"No problem," he said, adjusting his glasses using a finger. "So, what can I help you with tonight Nina?"

Nina in response to Anthony's question pulled out a vanguard deck case. "This. My friends bought me a vanguard deck for my birthday just a few days ago. Unfortunately I've got no idea how to play it at all. And for the last few days I've been pretty busy, so none of them have had time to teach me either. Then they told me about this cardshop and how I could learn to play vanguard here. So, is it true?"

"It's true." Anthony said.

"Great." Nina said. "So, how about teaching me to play?"

"One moment." Anthony said. He then quickly looked around the store and found no one else. No waiting customers or work to be done, meaning he was in the clear to teach Nina the rules of vanguard without interruption. Done checking he turned back to Nina and said, "Alright, let's go and teach you how to play vanguard."

"Lead the way, teacher." Nina playfully said.

She and Anthony then went over to a nearby fight table, Anthony taking out his own deck which he usually kept on him at all times. Seeing as he's an avid vanguard player himself.

"So before we begin, you're telling me you know nothing about vanguard at all?" Anthony asked Nina who shook her head.

"Not true," Nina answered. "I know how to start the game, but beyond that…"

"Right, got you." Anthony said. "Looks like we have a starting point."

The extent of what Nina knew about vanguard established, she and Anthony both set up their decks on the fight table and their boards, then when everything was set they began.

"Now Nina say this next part with me." Anthony asked.

Nina nodded.

"Ok, here we go. Now Stand up, vanguard!"

"Stand up, vanguard!"

"Chronojet, Zerostage!"

Chronojet, Zerostage

Grade 0, Power +5000

"Black Curse, Muriel!"

Black Curse, Muriel

Grade 0, Power +5000

Appearing in the Gear Chronicle landscape of the planet cray were two units. On one side was Muriel from Angel Feather, and on the other side was a miniature version of Chronojet Dragon, its coloring black and red, with the scarf around its neck pure gold.

"Angel Feather huh," Anthony said, examining the unit Nina had chosen for her starting unit. "A complicated clan, but if you know what you're doing, extremely dangerous."

"Good thing for you I have hardly any clue what I'm doing huh," Nina joked, Anthony chuckling in kind.

"Well maybe." Anthony mused. "You never know how a card fight will end until it does. That's one of the absolute truths of vanguard. But moving on to more important things. I'll go first, and you can follow my lead, sound good?"

"That's fine." Nina said.

"Ok then." Anthony said. "Now, I draw." Anthony drew the top card of the deck and placed it in his hand. He then selected a card and raised it into the air away from the others. "Now I ride. Chronoethos Jackal."

Chronoethos Jackal

Grade 1, Power +7000

"Zerostage moves back as forerunner." Anthony moved Zerostage back behind Jackal. "Now what I just did is known as a ride. It's when you upgrade your vanguard by one grade," Anthony explained, tapping the grade of Jackal for emphasis. "The grades of vanguard cards range from zero to four, and in the game you always begin with a grade 0 and can only move up a grade one turn at a time. Usually."

"Usually?" Nina tilted her head at Anthony's open words.

"Let's leave that for later. Explaining the clans right now would definitely overlord your brain. The point is, when it's your turn you ride the vanguard and go up a grade. Understand?"

"I understand." Nina said." But then, why was Zerostage able to move to the back row?"

"That's because Zerostage is what's known as a forerunner, a special kind of grade 0 unit which usually moves when you ride over it." Anthony explained, Nina nodding that she understood. "By the way, if you go first in a vanguard fight you cannot attack. So with that I'll end my turn."

[Damage: Anthony (0) Nina (0)]

"Your move." Anthony said.

[Turn 2: Hand; Anthony (5) Nina (5)]

"Thank you." Nina said. "Now, my turn. I draw." Nina then looked at her hand and picked out a card, raising it higher than the others. "Now I ride. Black Bomber, Maalik."

Black Bomber Maalik

Grade 1, Power +7000

"Muriel moves back." Nina moved Muriel directly behind Maalik. "Ok ,now what do I do?"

"You attack my vanguard." Anthony said. "You can also use Muriel to give Maalik more power when attacking, which is known as a boost." He explained.

"Ok. Here I go. With a boost from Mureil, Maalik will attack Chronoethos." Nina said.

(7000+5000=12000)

Anthony nodded. "Good you're doing well. Now, look at the top card of your deck. Doing that when your vanguard attacks is what's known as a drive check."

"For the different kinds of triggers right? Then you in response perform a damage check and see if you get any triggers as well."

Anthony raised a brow at Nina' explanation. "I thought you said this was your first time playing vanguard."

"It is. But like I said my friends play it around me all the time. And they just love explaining the game to me any chance they get. Guess some of it stuck in my head."

"Seems so." Anthony said.

"Right. Now, my drive check." Nina flipped over the top card of her deck and smiled, while Anthony could only show a wry smile. "I believe what I just drew is a critical trigger, correct?"

"Correct." Anthony answered, staring at the card Nina had just revealed.

"Well then, as my friends say when they draw one, all effects to the vanguard."

(12000+5000=17000)

"Damage check. No triggers." Anthony placed both cards in the damage zone.

[Damage: Anthony (2) Nina (0)]

"I end my turn. Your move." Nina said. But Anthony couldn't miss the smug grin on her face when she said the words.

He wanted to wipe it off her face. But he knew that would be wrong. She is a beginner and he's not that type of player in the first. So dismissing his urge to go all out he decided to begin his next turn.

[Turn 3: Hand; Anthony (5) Nina (6)]

"I draw. Now I ride. Pulsar, Spearhead Unicorn."

Pulsar, Spearhead Unicorn

Grade 2, Power +9000

"Now I call. Pulsar Tamer, Lugal-ure." Anthony called Lugal-ure to the front right rear-guard circle. "What I just did is known as a call, meaning I called another unit besides the vanguard. These units are known as rear-guards, which have a number of skills that can help the vanguard. Not only can they attack but if need be also defend, which is called an intercept. Now, it's time for my attack to begin. With a boost from Zerostage, Spearhead will attack Maalik."

(9000+5000=14000)

"When an attack happens you can also guard. And you can do this by using a card from your hand with shield. But just so you know, unless the shield is of greater strength than the attack power of the unit attacking it won't hold." Anthony explained.

"Dudley noted." Nina said. "Also, guard." Nina placed the critical trigger from earlier in the guardian circle, blocking Anthony's attack.

"Drive check. No trigger. Lugal-ure will now attack the vanguard."

(9000)

"I don't guard. Damage check. No trigger."

[Damage: Anthony (2) Nina (1)]

"I end my turn."

[Turn 4: Hand; Anthony (5) Nina (5)]

"Stand and draw." Nina said.

Anthony nodded when she did. "Nice, looks like you're getting the hand of the game."

"It's all because I have a good teacher." Nina explained.

Anthony appreciated the small praise Nina just gave him. Only… he couldn't put his finger on it but he still felt something was… strange about her. He couldn't shake the feeling no matter how hard he tried. And he didn't know if that was a good thing or a bad thing.

"Now I ride. Black Slice, Harut."

Black Slice, Harut

Grade 2, Power +9000

"Now with a boost from Muriel, Harut attacks your vanguard."

(9000+5000=14000)

"This time I'll guard that."

"Drive check. No trigger."

[Damage: Anthony (2) Nina (1)]

"I end my turn."

[Turn 5: Hand; Anthony (4) Nina (6)]

"Stand and draw." Anthony raised a card from his hand into the air. "Now this is where things really get started. I ride. Chronojet Dragon G!"

Chronojet Dragon G

Grade 3, Power +11000

"Lugal-ure, attack Harut. And with her skill add an additional +2000 power!"

(9000+2000=11000)

"That's a no guard. Damage check. No trigger."

"Alright, now Chronojet will attack with a boost from Zerostage."

(11000+5000=16000)

"Again, that's a no guard."

"Twin drive check. First check. No trigger. Second check. A draw trigger. Power to Chronojet and I draw one card."

(16000+5000=21000)

"Damage check. No trigger."

[Damage: Anthony (2) Nina (3)]

"I end my turn."

[Turn 6: Hand; Anthony (7) Nina (5)]

Nina placed her damage in her damage zone, a smile coming upon her face. "Beginning of the sixth turn, damage count, two to three. You really are quite interesting Anthony, and the way you play vanguard, it has a nice feel to it. Truly, it does."

At Nina's words Anthony narrowed his eyes and adjusted his glasses once more. "Nina… just who are you, really?"

"Like I said I-"

"Let's not lie to each other shall we," Anthony interrupted. "We both know you're no beginner. Now with the way you just spoke about the game. So please, do me the courtesy of telling me who you really are, otherwise I'll end the match right here and now."

"Fufu, my how scary." Nina joked, ignoring Anthony's glare. "But you're right about one thing, I am no beginner. In fact I've been playing vanguard for a long time. Probably as long as you."

"Then what was with the ruse earlier?" Anthony questioned.

"For now let's call it a test."

"A test?"

Nina nodded. "Yes, a test from my employer."

"And who might your employer be?"

Nina made a 'tsk tsk' motion with her fingers. "Now, now, telling you that at the moment would be too easy. Instead how about this, if you win the cardfight I'll tell you all you want to know. But if I win, I only tell you what I want, does that work for you?"

"How do I know you're telling me the truth right now when you started out our very first meeting with a lie?"

"Look into my eyes. Does it look like I'm lying?"

Anthony looked into Nina's eyes and found… no deceit at all. In fact now that he looked closer he saw the same burning passion for vanguard that he had himself, along with so many others he knew. At that moment Anthony knew the truth.

"You're not lying that much I can tell. So… you've got yourself a deal. But you better keep your promise."

"Don't worry I will. But…" Nina instantly sharpened her gaze, making Anthony tense up. "That's only if you win. And now that the cats out of the bag I won't be holding back."

Anthony didn't even need to ask Nina what she meant by those words. He had a feeling he wouldn't wait long to find out what they meant.

"Stand and draw." Nina raised a card into the air. "Black angel of death, come and rain down terror into the battlefield. I ride. Black Shock, Gavrail Prim!"

Black Shock, Gavrail Prim

Grade 3, Power +11000

" The skill of Gavrail Prim. I take a card from my hand and place it in the damage zone." Nina did just that, giving herself four damage. " Then. Generation stride! Black Seraph Gavrail!"

Black Seraph, Gavrail

Grade 4, Power +15000

Anthony now knew why his foreboding feeling from earlier had been spot on. If Nina truly was a master of the Angel Feather clan that manipulated the damage zone for their own benefit then he was about to be in a world of hurt.

"Stride skill. I take one card from the damage zone and place it in my hand, I take one and heal it, and then I deal one damage to the vanguard itself, and if any triggers are pulled during this process their effects are still valid." Nina explained. She then added a card from the damage zone to her hand, healed one, and then dealt one damage to the vanguard. "Rescue check." Nina smiled as she flipped over the top card of her deck and placed it in the damage zone. Draw trigger. The power to Gavrail and I draw one card. But don't think I'm done yet. Far from it. Next I call. Nurse of Broken Heart, Black Mirage, Hageete, and finally Medical Bomber Nurse." Nina called Hageete behind Bomber Nurse and placed them in the left column while Broken Heart was placed in the front right column space. "The skill of Gavrail." Nina counter blasted 1 card and flipped over a copy of Gavrail from her G zone. "She obtains a skill. Now the skill of Muriel." Nina counter blasted 1 card and moved Muriel to her soul. "Place the top card of the deck in the damage zone, then superior call a unit from the damage zone." Nina chose to call Black Prepare, Arikaba behind Broken Heart.

'A complete guard, just great' Anthony sarcastically thought, knowing full well that any card called by Muriel's skill would go back to the owner's hand at the end of the turn. Meaning Nina had just given herself a complete guard like it was no trouble at all. 'She really is a master of Angel Feather.'

"Skill of Broken Heart. Since a unit was placed on the board from the drop zone she gives +2000 power to herself and the vanguard. Now Gavrail will attack Chronojet!"

(26000+5000+2000=33000)

"That's a no guard." Anthony said. He weighed his options and figured it was the best choice out of all of them.

"Triple drive. First check. No trigger. Second check. A critical trigger. Power to Broken heart and critical to the vanguard. Final check. No trigger."

"Damage check. First check. No trigger. Second check. No trigger." Anthony placed both cards in the damage zone, cursing his trigger luck today.

"The skill of Gavrail now activates. I select two cards from the damage zone and heal them, then take the top two cards of my deck and place them in the damage zone. Then select two units on the board and give each of them +2000 power. The units I chose are Bomber and Broken Heart. In addition since two more cards have now been placed in the damage zone Broken Hearts skill activates twice more, giving her another +4000 power. Now with a boost from Arakiba Broken Heart attacks your vanguard."

(9000+5000+2000+2000+2000+2000+6000=28000)

"No you don't. Generation guard! Interdimensional Dragon, Heteroround Dragon!"

Interdimensional Dragon, Heteroround Dragon

Shield +15000

"Using his skill Broken Heart returns to the deck, call the top card of the deck!"

Nina did just that, returning Broken Heart to the deck, shuffling it, then calling the top card of the deck, a grade 1.

"No matter. With a boost from Hageete, Bomber attacks Lugal-ure."

(9000+2000+7000=18000)

"Guard!"

[Damage: Anthony (4) Nina (3)]

"I end my turn. The skill of Muriel" Nina took Arakiba and placed it in her hand. "Arakiba returns to my hand." She pointed a hand to Anthony. "Your move."

[Turn 7: Hand; Anthony (5) Nina (6)]

"Don't mind if I do. Stand and draw. Now, it's my turn to attack! Generation Stride! Metapulsar, Split Pegasus!"

Metapulsar, Split Pegasus

Grade 4, Power +15000

"Stride skill! Superior call Chronoclaw Monkey from my hand." Anthony called Chronoclaw Monkey to the open front row rear-guard circle. "Skill of Chronoclaw!" Anthony counter blasted one card. "He gains +5000 power. Now, the skill of Split Pegasus!" Anthony counter blasted 1 card and flipped over a card in the G zone. "Lugal-ure back to the deck, then superior call two Zodiac Time Beasts from the deck minus -1 grade from her." Anthony returned Lugal-ure to the deck then superior called Chronethos to her spot on the board and Casualty Dragon behind him. "Skill of Casualty Dragon, when he's called to the board select another unit on the board and it gains +2000 power. I choose Split Pegasus. Now the skill of Zerostage." Anthony sent Zerostage to his soul. "Now I can superior call a unit one grade higher from the deck." Anthony then called Pulsar, Transit Dragon behind Split Pegasus. "And if the vanguard is Chronojet then the card called and the vanguard both gain +4000 power."

'His formation was barely there. Now not only does he have it full ,but he has tons of power paying hardly any cost.' Nina thought observing Anthony build his formation. 'Nice. He is good.'

"Here we go! First Chronoclaw! Also the other skill of Split Pegasus. All Zodiac Time Beasts in the front row gain another +1000 power!"

(9000+5000+1000=15000)

"I'll guard that."

"Split Pegasus with a boost from Transit!"

(26000+2000+4000+4000+7000=42000)

"Complete guard!"

"Triple drive! First check. No trigger. Second check. Stand trigger. Chronoclaw stands, add +5000 power. Third check. Heal trigger. Power to Chronoethos and I recover one damage. Chronoclaw now attacks once again."

(15000+5000=20000)

"No guard. Damage check. No trigger."

"Chronoethos will now attack with a boost from Casualty."

(7000+4000+1000+5000+7000=24000)

"No guard. Damage check. No trigger."

[Damage: Anthony (3) Nina (5)]

"I end my turn. The skill of Transit. Send him to the soul and draw one card." Anthony said. He then looked at the board and found the situation… confusing. He had no proof but he was sure Nina could've blocked his last attack, but she didn't for some reason. Which only made him worry even more. He didn't know why, it just did.

'Maybe it's nothing.' Anthony thought. Maybe he was just being paranoid.

[Turn 8: Hand; Anthony (8) Nina (3)]

"Stand and draw." Nina after picking up the top card of her deck sent Anthony a smile.

A smile that sent a shiver down his spine.

Then all of a sudden Anthony felt something overcome him. He had no clue what it was but before he knew it his vision became blurry and lined with color, then in an instant he was somewhere else.

"Wh-what the hell?!" Anthony exclaimed.

He looked around where he was and found himself not in his family's card shop but in a place completely foreign to him.

Anthony found himself standing in ancient ruins, covered with roots and moss, but he was not alone. Around him stood six figures. All of them were cloaked leaving Anthony unable to make out their faces, the only thing he could make out were the six seals of the different vanguard nations, each of the cloaked figures having one embroidered on their person.

As Anthony observed the cloaked figures he felt the one bearing the cloak of Dark Zone looking directly at him.

Anthony turned to the cloaked figure, about to ask a question when the sky itself turned blood red. Looking up because of the sudden change Anthony saw the clouds part and horrid beings begin their descent toward the ruins he was in.

But a moment after the creatures did, six lights sprang forth from the cloaked figures. The lights were so bright Anthony had to use an arm to shield his eyes, and then before he knew it he was engulfed in it.

"Ha...ha...ha…" Taking deep breaths Anthony recomposed himself before looking around. When he did he found himself back in his family's cardshop back in his fight with Nina, like nothing had happened at all.

"N-Nina, what was that?" Anthony questioned. Something inside him just told him that Nina would know about what he just experienced, and he had every intention of finding out what it was.

"What you just experienced. That is one of the things you'll only learn if you beat me. But, that's not going to happen." Nina explained.

Anthony having recomposed himself enough stood back up. "You speak as if you've already won. But from the looks of things, I'm going to win."

Nina nodded. "Yes, normally that would probably be true. But… there's something you haven't realized yet."

And what might that be?"

"The world of possibilities. Here, let me show you." Nina took a card from her hand and placed it in the drop zone, picking up a card from the G zone. "Generation stride. Supreme Black Seraph, Gavrail Trinity."

When Nina placed her G unit down on her vanguard circle Gavrail Prim was engulfed in a pillar of light and when it died down, a new angel stood in her place. She was a beautiful young woman with long hair that goes to the small of her back with black and blonde hair intermixed along with deep purple eyes. On her back she had twelve wings, intermixed between black and white just like her hair. She was dressed in gray armor lined with gold. In one hand she held a staff covered in golden energy and in her other hand she held a black long sword shrouded in black energy. Atop her head sat a halo, but her ears were pointed like that of a demon.

Supreme Black Seraph, Gavrail Trinity

Grade 4, Power +15000

"Nina, what is that G unit?"

Nina shook her head. "Like I keep saying, the answer to that question will not come until you prove yourself. And unfortunately today is not that day. I forgo stride skill. Now the skill of Gavrail Trinity." Nina counter blasted 2 cards and flipped over a copy of Gavarail Prim from the G zone. "Superior all cards from the damage zone to board and perform a rescue check for each one."

"What?!" Anthony exclaimed.

Nina paid him no mind and superior called all units in her damage zone to her board. "Now, quintuple rescue check. First check. No trigger. Second check. Critical trigger. All effects to the vanguard. Third check. Critical trigger. All effects to Broken Heart. Fourth check. No trigger. Final check. Draw trigger. Power to the vanguard and I draw one card. But wait, I'm not done yet."

"There's more."

"Yes. Gavrail Trinity's Generation Break 4. If five or more cards were called using her skill then all units called gain +5000 power, in addition the vanguard gains +10000 power, plus one critical and plus one drive."

"Wait, wait, wait, what kind of overpowered G unit is this? More importantly, why do you have it? Nina, just who are you?"

Nina just smiled at Anthony. "All will become clear in time. But before that can happen you need to get stronger, much stronger. Now, Gavrail Trinity, end this."

[Damage: Anthony (6) Nina (5)]

Anthony placing the three damage cards in the damage he stood motionless, clenching his fists. However instead of a frown he had a smile on his face. Looking up he stared directly into Nina's eyes.

"So, how do I get stronger?" Anthony asked.

Despite losing the cardfight he was really fired up. He couldn't explain it. He had no idea why he was feeling this way, he just was.

"About that, you'll find out soon." Nina said. "And also, thank you for the cardfight. It was very fun. One more thing, take care of your partner."

"What?"

Nina pointed down to the board, and Anthony looked down following her finger. When he did he was left speechless for on the board was a new unit he had never seen before. Reaching down Anthony picked it up and turned his head up, ready to ask Nina what the card was all about. Only to find she was gone.

...

"No, what just happened?"
