"How about him?"

"No, he's an ok fighter, but his moves are always the same and repetitive. Any higher level opponent could take him down without a problem, no offense to him."

"Ok. Oh, how about her?"

"No. I've seen her around here regularly, and she doesn't play well with others. Every time we have an event that requires more than one person she always takes charge, never listening to anyone else's opinion. So forming strategies with her is a no go, hence she is also out."

"Fine. Ah, what about her? I've fought against her a number of times, and she's pretty good. Her personality isn't that bad either, and to top it off she's cute too."

"Get your mind out of the gutter. As for her she's a no go as well. The other day she and her friends turned in a team application form. She's already taken."

"Ah, why are all the good ones gone already?"

"Who knows?"

Anthony and Eric both sighed to themselves.

They were at Victory, Anthony working his shift, and they were not having the best of days. Ever since the two had formed their team for participation in the world tournament a few weeks ago they had been searching for a third member to join them. However the search was not going as well as they hoped.

Meaning they had zero candidates in mind.

Everyone they had asked was either; already on a team, too busy, or didn't mesh well with others and couldn't work together. One after another they all fell through. And it's not as if Anthony or Eric are too picky about who they partner up with, they just want someone who wants to go all the way to the top as much as they do, and has decent card fighting skills. If they got that then things would be fine. But from the looks of it, they may be out of luck.

Eric's face was lying flat on top of the store counter. "Maybe we should do something like a help wanted poster."

"Are we really that desperate?" Anthony asked. Eric then turned his head, and his eyes said "Yes, we really are" with no hint of shame at all. And as much as Anthony wanted to deny the look, he couldn't do so entirely with absolute certainty. "I guess we are that desperate. Oh man."

Anthony sighed once more.

It was then he heard the sliding doors to the open, so he sat himself up to help the customer if need be. Only he didn't have to. For Anthony knew exactly who had just entered Victory.

It was two people. Females his own age wearing his schools' uniform. The first of the girls had light brown hair in a ponytail down to her mid-back, to bangs framing her face and the same colored eyes. The second girl like Sylvia was a bit on the short side, but was a bit taller standing at 5'4. She has porcelain skin, silky black straight hair that stops just past her shoulders, and ice blue eyes. Most people even akin her appearance to that of a doll at times.

The names of the two girls are Christina Addison, and Cera Lucas respectively.

Anthony and the others had gotten to know them over the years since they frequently came into Victory, leading to friendship.

"Hey guys, why do you look so down," Christina asked Anthony and Eric, as she and Cera made their way over to the front counter.

Eric turned his head to face them. "We've been trying to find a final member of our team for the last few weeks now, however it's not panning out at all." He quickly explained.

"Unfortunate." Cera simply stated. A blank expression on her face, which she usually wore most of the time. "But considering that this is the first world tournament hosted in a number of years, it's not wholly unexpected."

"Wow Cera, really know how to cheer people up don't you?" Eric spoke sarcastically.

"It's a gift." Cera retorted, showing one of her rare smiles.

"Seriously though, you guys need to move a bit faster, the deadline to sign up is approaching after all." Christina said.

It is because in another few weeks, registration entry for the world tournament and even its preliminaries would be closed, locking anyone else who didn't make it in time out forever. Anyone who didn't sign up would miss their chance.

"We know," Anthony said. "It's just, we want someone who can least fight decently and work in a group. However it seems everyone who fits that description is either busy with other things, or already on a team like you two."

Anthony spoke the truth. He and Eric had asked Christina and Cera if they would be interested in joining their team weeks ago, however it was then they learned that the two girls had already formed a team of their own with another student at the school. A young man by the name of Joshua Heatroth, Christina's childhood friend and also one of Eric's playboy buddies. Thus all three of them were out of the running before it even started.

"Yeah what Anthony said," Eric added. "And it's not like we haven't been trying you know."

"I know." Christina said. "I can see how hard you've both been working at it, and I think I might have a solution to your problem."

"Really?!" Eric and Anthony exclaimed, their heads shooting up from the front counter, eager to hear how Christina was going to help them.\

"Yes." Chrstina said, nodding with a smile. She then pointed to a certain fight table, where a match was taking place.

"Attack the vanguard," a female voice said.

"Damage check. No trigger. I lose again," her opponent said, defeat in their voice.

Eric and Anthony moved to see who Christina was pointing at.

They found it to be a girl their age. She was wearing their school uniform. She had deep red eyes and long blonde hair that went to her mid-back, as well as unblemished skin. Anthony and Eric knew who she was. Her name is Elizabeth Greenhouse Smith.

Seeing who Chrsitina was pointing to Eric tilted his head in confusion. "Chrisitna, why are you pointing to Greenhouse Smith of all people?" He asked. Christina just turned around and gave Eric a knowing smile. He knew exactly what it meant, and shook his head. "No, no, no, bad idea, really bad idea?"

"Why?" Christina questioned. "I think Elizabeth would make a perfect final member of your team. I've fought against her a number of times, and her skills are the real deal. Plus she knows you guys from school a bit so it wouldn't be awkward if you partnered up at all."

"True." Eric said. "Except for forgetting one thing. She's a delinquent."

Eric is not one to judge people usually, but the rumors surrounding Elizabeth were anything but. It was known that she was once part of a gang, and that she had been kicked out of her first middle school. Then there was her personality. At school she was generally cold to everyone who tried to get close to her, only allowing a few people to even do so. She is a wildcard in every sense of the word.

"Oh come on Eric, she's not that bad," Cera said. "I've actually chatted with her a few times, and she seems ok to me."

Eric gave Cera a flat look. "Yeah, that's because you're both kuudere types." (Kuudere= a term from Japanese referring to an anime character who is often cold, stoic, and blunt to others, a majority of the time.)

Cera's eye twitched at Eric's comment. All of them knew what it meant after all, being into anime and manga together.

"Even so, just give her a chance, she might surprise you." Chrisitna said.

"I think Christina and Cera are right on this," Anthony spoke up. Eric turned to look at him as if he had gone crazy.

"Are you insane? This will definitely blow up in our faces." Eric said.

"We won't know that until we try." Anthony retorted. "Come on, let's just give her a chance. Besides aren't you supposed to be a playboy? Yet you're passing up this opportunity to chat up a pretty girl."

"Nice try," Eric flatly spoke, "but this is different. She was in a gang!"

"And my mother has a saying. Never judge people based on their appearance, or any previous misconceptions you may have about them." Anthony said. "We're doing this."

Before Eric could retort, Anthony hung up his work apron, and put out the break sign on the front counter. He also looked around the shop a moment beforehand and found that it was just the regulars today, so he could get away with his break without causing trouble for anyone else.

The sign set Anthony began making his way over to Elizabeth.

"Wait," Eric hissed. But he saw that Anthony wasn't stopping at all. "Ah screw, wait up." Eric quickly caught up to Anthony and walked by his side.

Then in no time at all the two reached Elizabeth's fight table, the blonde looking up at them with a stoic expression on her face.

"Can I help you," she asked in a monotone voice.

"Yes." Anthony said, taking a seat. "My name is Anthony and this is my friend Eric."

"I know who you two are." Elizabeth said. "I've seen you around school."

"Good then that will make things easier." Eric said. "Bottom line, we're forming a team for the Vanguard world tournament and we would like you to be on it."

"Why me?" Elizabeth asked bluntly.

"To be honest, you're one of the only options left." Eric stated. "We've asked everyone else we know, and they've either already formed or are on a team, or have other things to attend to."

"So I'm not even your first choice?" Elizabeth asked.

"You wanted honesty and we gave it to you," Anthony said, using a finger to adjust his glasses. "To be honest the only reason we came over here to ask you is because Christina and Cera said you might be a good fit for us."

"Those two huh?" Elizabeth mused. "They're ok. Still, that doesn't mean I want to or will work with you two. Besides won't it be bad for your reputations if you're seen hanging out with a delinquent like me?"

"Is that what you call yourself, or what others do?" Anthony asked. "Because I just don't see it."

"Are you blind then, even with those glasses four-eyes?" Elizabeth harshly questioned.

Anthony shook his head. "I'm not. It's just… how do I put this, your cards. They're saying you're not a bad person at all. That you're actually a good person who made some mistakes, and that you can be quite sweet when you want to be."

"Want me to punch you?" Elizabeth asked.

"No," Anthony took out his deck case and set it on the table. "I want you to fight me. If I win, you'll join our team. But if you win, then how about free booster packs for a year. I'll pay for them all out of my own pocket."

"That's a good deal." Elizabeth said. "Ok, let's see what you've got four eyes."

"My name is Anthony." Anthony stated. "You know even though you're cute your mouth is foul."

"I won't be happy even if you praise me you know." Elizabeth flatly stated in return.

Eric just titled his head, watching as Anhony and Elizabeth went at it. 'Are they flirting right now? No, couldn't be.'

"Oh I know, you don't seem like the type," Anthony retorted, a small smile forming on his face.

'Yep, they're definitely flirting.' Eric thought. He wouldn't believe it if he wasn't seeing it himself first hand.

"Enough talk, let's get this started," Elizabeth said. Her deck and first hand set.

"My thoughts exactly," Anthony retorted. His deck and hand the same.

"Now stand up. Vanguard!" Anthony said.

"Stand. Vanguard!" Elizabeth said.

"Chronojet, Zerostage!"

Anthony looked at Elizabeth's vanguard, using a finger to adjust his glasses as he did. "Shadow Paladin, and the Revengers series, huh," he mused. "Interesting."

"Whatever," Elizabeth bluntly stated. "So, who's going first?"

"My parents always tell me to let a lady go first," Anthony mused.

"Why thank you. I guess you are a gentleman four eyes." Elizabeth said. "So I'll take you up on that offer. I draw. I then ride. Elusive Revenger, Elric."

"Drive check. A critical trigger. All effects to Jackal."

(12000+5000=17000)

"Drive check. No trigger."

"Damage check. No trigger."

"Here is Meteor Black attacking your vanguard."

(9000)

"I'll guard that one."

"I end my turn." Elizabeth said.

"Stand and draw." Anthony said.

"I end my turn." Anthony said.

"Stand and draw." Elizabeth said.

[Turn 5: Hand: Elizabeth (5) Anthony (6)]

Elizabeth looked at Anthony after drawing her next card. "Don't think just because you're ahead in damage that you're going to win. You haven't seen anything I can do yet."

"Then come on then, show me," Anthony said, using a finger to adjust his glasses.

"Hey you two, quiet flirting," Eric said. He then got an evil look from both Anthony and Elizabeth, causing him to hold his palms up in defense of himself. "Sorry, you know what, forget I said anything."

"That's what I thought," Anthony said.

"What four-eyes just said," Elizabeth added.

The two having put Eric in his place Anthony and Elizabeth returned to their cardfight in earnest.

Meanwhile Eric released a sigh. 'They're made for each other.' He thought.

Taking a card from her hand Elizabeth raised it slightly in the air. "Now black dragon whose breath can even kill the dead descend up this battleground, and use your power to turn it into void of nothingness. I ride! Mortem Dragon, Raging Revenger Crom Cruach!"

Mortem Dragon, Raging Revenger Crom Cruach

Grade 3, Power +11000

Elizabeth's avatar was engulfed in a steam of dark light. Then when it faded, what was on her avatar circle was a dragon that resembled Raging Form Dragon, only this dragon did not have a cape, instead it had three pairs of western dragon wings protruding from its back, all of them deep purple. In one hand it held an ornate golden broadsword that was giving off a pure black aura, the same aura that was leaking from Crom Cruach's mouth.

"Now with a boost from Conrad, Chrome Cruach will attack your vanguard!" Elizabeth said.

"11000+4000=15000)

"No guard."

"Twin drive check. First check. No trigger. Second check. A heal trigger. The power to Meteor black and I recover one damage." Elizabeth said.

"Damage check. No trigger."

"Here comes Meteor Black!"

(9000+5000=14000)

"I'll guard that!"

[Damage: Elizabeth (2) Anthony (2)]

"I end my turn." Elizabeth said.

"Stand and draw." Anthony said.

[Turn 6: Hand: Elizabeth (5) Anthony (6)]

Anthony looked at Elizabeth and smirked. "Well you've shown me a bit of your, so it's only fair I show you some of mine in return," Anthony mused, raising a card slightly in the air.

"Phrasing!" Eric mumbled.

Anthony and Elizabeth ignored him of course.

"I ride. Chronojet Dragon "NEXT"!"

Chronojet Dragon "NEXT"

Grade 3, Power +11000

"Then. Liberating the generation zone. Generation stride! Interdimensional Dragon, History-build Dragon!"

Interdimensional Dragon, History-build Dragon

Grade 4, Power +15000

"Stride skill. The opponent, if able, must select one rear-guard unit and send it to the bottom of the deck." Anthony explained.

Elizabeth looked at her board. She then decided to place Meteor black on the bottom of her deck.

"In addition I can call a unit from my hand, and then the unit called and the vanguard both gain +4000 power." Anthony explained. "I call Casualty Dragon. And with his skill add another +2000 power to the vanguard. I then call Chronethos. Chronoethos, attack the vanguard! With his skill add another +4000 power, and with the skill of History-build, when he's face up on the field or in the G zone, all rear-guards with the "Time Leap" ability gain another +3000 power." Anthony explained.

(7000+4000+3000=14000)

"That's a guard!"

"Casualty now attacks your vanguard."

(7000+4000+3000-14000)

"That's a no guard. Damage check.. No trigger."

"Skill of Casualty now activates. Since he launched a successful attack against the opponents vanguard, one of the other units on my board can now time leap. And I choose Chronoethos." Anthony explained. He then called Chronoclaw Monkey. "With Monkey's skill add +5000 power. Now Monkey will attack your vanguard."

(9000+5000=14000)

Elizabeth looked at her hand for a moment before voicing her decision.

"No guard! Damage check. A draw trigger. Power to Crom Cruach and I draw."

(11000+5000=16000)

"With a boost from Zerostage, History-build attacks the vanguard! In addition, activating their skills." Anthony placed Zerostage in the soul. "When a unit is placed on the board other than from the hand, then superior call a unit with +1 grade higher than Zero from the deck, and give that unit and the vanguard +4000 power. Then there's the skill of History-build." Anthony soul blasted one card, and then flipped over a copy of History-build in the G zone. "I can time leap as many units as there are face up cards in the G zone. Since there is only one I can only choose one from my board, but that's enough. I call Lugal-Ure and Pulsar Transit Dragon. Anthony placed these two units in the same column containing Casualty.

(26000+4000+2000+4000+5000=41000)

"Generation guard! Dragwiser. Bronach!"

Dragwiser, Bronach

Grade 4, Shield +15000

"With her skill, look at the top five cards of the deck, then call any grade 1's from among them. In addition to that, guard."

"Triple drive. First check. No trigger. Second check. No trigger. Third check. A draw trigger. The power to Lugal-Ure, and I draw one card. Now with a boost from Pulsar, Lugal-Ure will attack and with her skill add another +2000 power." Anthony explained.

(9000+2000+3000+5000+7000+4000=30000)

"No guard. Damage check. No trigger."

[Damage: Elizabeth (5) Anthony (2)]

"I end my turn." Anthony said. "The skill of Pulsar. Since he boosted an attack and the vanguard is "Chronojet '' I can move him to the soul and then draw one card." Anthony explained. He then did just that.

"Stand and draw." Elizabeth said.

[Turn 7: Hand: Elizabeth (4) Anthony (7)]

Elizabeth eyed Anthony. "Ok I'll admit, you've got some skill."

"Why thank you," Anthony mused.

"Still, this isn't over by a long shot." Elizabeth said with determination. "Now. Liberating the generation zone. Generation Stride! True Revenger, Raging Rapt Dragon!"

True Revenger, Raging Rapt Dragon

Grade 4, Power +15000

"Stride skill! I can look at the top five cards of my deck, and then call any grade 1 or below units from among them," Elizabeth explained. She then did just that. "I call Meteor Black Dragon and Elusive Renger, Elric." Elizabeth placed the cards in the same column.

"Wait a minute, isn't Meteor black a grade 2 unit," Eric said.

"When the vanguard is "Raging" and he's called from the deck he loses one grade," Elizabeth explained.

"I see." Anthony said.

"Oh you ain't seen nothing yet," Elizabeth said. "I call. Revenger, Detonate Heat Dragon. Now he'll attack your vanguard and with his skill he gains +2000 power."

(9000+2000=11000)

"Guard!"

"That's fine, it won't matter anyway," Elizabeth said. "With a boost from Elric, Meteor black will attack your vanguard!"

(9000+7000=16000)

"That's a no guard. Damage check. No trigger."

"Now with a boost from Conrad, Raging Rapt will attack your vanguard. In addition activating the skill of Conrad," Elizabeth explained. She then placed Conrad in the soul, discarded a card from her hand, and looked at the top card of her deck before placing it on the bottom of her deck." With Conrad's skill I can draw a card from the deck, and also if there is a G unit face up in the G zone, then I can choose one unit on the board and give it another +5000 power. I choose Raging Rapt, obviously."

(26000+4000+5000=35000)

"Complete guard!"

"Triple drive. First check. A stand trigger. Detonate Heat will stand, and also gain the power. Second check. No trigger. Third check. A critical trigger, all effects to Detonate Heat!" Elizabeth exclaimed. "Now for the real fun to begin."

Elizabeth gained a grin her face. She then counter blasted one card, soul blasted one card, discarded two cards from her hand and retired both Meteor Black and Elric. "The skill of Raging Rapt. When its' finished attacking I can place it back face up in the G zone, and then superior call another Raging Rapt as standing, drive minus 1. Also the skill of Elric. When it's retired due to the effect of another "Revenger" unit then I can counter charge two cards." Elizabeth counter charged two cards.

'So the cost she just paid was nothing at all.' Anthony thought. He could see now why Christina and Cera had recommended Elizabeth to him and Eric. Her skill using Shadow Paladin and the "Revenger" series was expert in its ways.

"Now, once again attacking your vanguard, here comes Raging Rapt!"

(26000)

"Generation guard! Retroactive Time Maiden, Uluru!"

Grade 4, Shield +15000

"Using her skill add another +5000 to the shield. In addition intercept with Casualty!"

"Twin drive check. First check. No trigger. Second check, a heal trigger. I recover one damage and power to Detonate. Now he will once again attack your vanguard!"

(9000+2000+5000+5000+5000=26000)

"That's a no guard. Damage check. No triggers."

[Damage: Elizabeth (4) Anthony (5)]

"I end my turn." Elizabeth said. "The skill of Detonate." Elizabeth counter blasted one card and retired Detonate. "With his skill I can search the deck for up to one Abyyss dragon with Limit Break "4" and add it to my hand." Elizabeth then added a card to her hand. "Also Crom Cruach generation break 2. For every face up card in the G zone, I can send the same number of Abyss dragons back to my deck and shuffle it." Since Elizabeth has three cards face up in the G zone, she sent three abyss dragons back to her deck. "And since two or more were sent back to the deck with this skill, then I get to draw two cards."

"Stand and draw." Anthony said.

[Turn 8: Hand: Elizabeth (8) Anthony (4)]

Eric looked at the board and simply took stock of the situation. 'Elizabeth is good. She's got a lot of cards in her hand, and Anthony doesn't even know what some of them are. But what he does know is that she has a generation guard, and a lot to guard with. I wonder, just how he'll win this one?'

Anthony was also having the same thoughts as Eric. But instead of worrying he couldn't help but smile.

Elizabeth seeing this slightly frowned. "What's with that smile, are you enjoying getting the crapped kicked out of you, four-eyes?"

Anthony shook his head. No, I'm fired up and it feels good."

Elizabeth kept her expression blank, but on the inside she was feeling the exact same thing. A burning sensation in her chest. A feeling she hadn't felt in a very long time.

"Well even if that's the case, it won't help you achieve victory," Elizabeth stated.

"It won't but this next turn will." Anthony stated. "Generation stride! Metapulsar, Mystery-freeze Dragon!"

Metapulsar, Mystery-freeze Dragon

Grade 4, Power +15000

"Stride skill. Since you have no units on the board I'll skip that part. Instead I just call from my hand. Chronofang Tiger G!" Anthony said. "Next is the skill of Mystery-freeze. His generation break 3." Anthony counter blasted two cards and then shuffled his deck. "I now reveal and bind the top four cards of my deck, and any grade shown during this cannot be used to guard against the vanguards attack this turn. In addition if a grade 3 is shown during this, then Mystery-freeze gains plus one drive. Here we go!"

Anthony flipped over the firs card, which was a grade 0 unit. He then flipped over the next card, which was also a grade 0 and a trigger. His next flip revealed...a grade 1 unit. Anthony then went to flip over the final unit, and it was revealed to be a...grade 3.

Anthony smiled upon seeing this.

While Elizabeth felt a lump forming in her throat.

"With these four cards revealed it means that when the vanguard attacks this turn no grade 0, 1, or 3 units can be used to guard its attacks this turn. Also since a grade 3 was revealed, it means Mystery-freeze gains another drive check for this turn." Anthony explained.

"I call. Pulsar, Spearhead Unicorn." Anthony said. "With its skill add +200 power. Now Chronofang G will attack your vanguard."

(11000)

"That's a no guard. Damage check. No trigger."

"Here comes Spearhead."

(9000+2000=11000)

"I'll guard that!"

"Activating Spearheads skill." Anthony counter blasted one card. "I look at the top cards of my deck for every Zodiac Time Beast on my board, then I can choose a unit and call it to the board." He explained. He then looked at three cards from the top of his deck and chose one unit from among them. "I call Chronojet dragon G over Chronofang. Now here comes Mystery-freeze!"

(26000)

"I won't let you. Generation guard! Dark Dragon, Plotmaker Dragon!"

Dark Dragon, Plotmaker Dragon

Grade 4, Shield +15000

"With his skill ritual. Since I have three grade one units on the drop zone, add +10000 to the shield!"

(10000+15000=250000)

'Anthony's going to need two triggers to win this. Eric thought.

"Quadruple drive check! First check. No trigger. Second check. No trigger. Third check. A stand trigger. Spearhead stands and the power to Mystery-freeze. Final check…" Anthony reached for the card, and slowly flipped it over. It was as if time stopped for a moment, until Anthony finally revealed his last drive check.

Which was a critical trigger.

"A ctricily trigger. All effects to Mystery-freeze!" Anthony exclaimed.

"Damage check." Elizabeth shakely said. "No...no triggers."

[Damage: Elizabeth (6) Anthony (5)]

The match having ended in Anthony's victory both he and Elizabeth collected their decks and then put them back in their deck cases, then neither of them said a word for the next few moments.

Eric also didn't say anything at all.

"...I'm in." Elizabeth said, a small smile coming over her face. "I'll be on your team."

"Thanks for this," Anthony mused. "And I promise you won't regret it either."

"Sure, Anthony," Elizabeth said.

"Hey, you just called me by my name," Anthony said.

"Once again you two, please stop flirting in front of me," Eric added.

"Shut up, playboy." Elizabeth said sternly.

Eric held his chest in mock heart. "Ah, so hurtful. But seriously, welcome to the team. Ellie."

Elizabeth punched Eric right in the gut. "Never call me Ellie, understood?"

"Understood." Eric shakily said, holding his stomach. He knew when to not push people, and this was it.

"Excellent. Then we won't have any problems." Elizabeth said.

Watching the two Anthony knew his team was going to be unique.

"By the way, I've got a question. What's this team of ours going to be called?" Elizabeth asked.

"No idea," Eric said. "I was just hoping we got a third member in time to qualify for the tournament itself. I didn't give much thought to a name."

"Actually, I have a name." Anthony said, the two of them looking at him. "I was thinking, since we want to go all the way, and achieve victory, then about this. The Victories. I know it might sound a little pretentious but I feel something that tells me its just right."

"I like it, it makes us sound like we're only thinking of winning and nothing else," Eric said.

"I think it's good too." Elizabeth added.

"Ok then." Anthony said.

And with that team Victories was formed.
