I was staring at her.
She was still crying, but I couldn't get my emotions under control. Tris was pregnant, and I was going to be a dad. After a minute, I walked away, but after a few steps, I turned back and sank to the ground, crouching with my hands laced.
"Please, say something," she begged. "Anything."
"How long, Tris? How long have you known?"
"A week or so. I—When I was sick with a cold, that.. I never had a cold. It was morning sickness."
"Of course," I laughed, running a hand through my short hair. "Of course."
"We—I don't have to keep the baby if you don't want to.. I'm not sure we're ready and stuff, but.."
I was at her side in a heartbeat. She pulled away when I tried to hug her, and that's when I knew I'd really screwed up. She thought I didn't want this. That I didn't want our baby.
"Tris, I do want this baby."
She choked on her sobs.
"I want this baby more than anything. I just—I just didn't expect it, and I'm kind of shaken up. This is going to work out, okay?"
She nodded and hugged me tightly. "I love you."
"I love you too, Tris."
"Any questions?"
"How.. how uhm.. far along are you? Four, five weeks?" I asked, frowning.
A laugh escaped her. "Eight weeks."
"Eight?"
"I didn't notice until last week. The vomiting, the bloating.. It didn't make sense until I went to the doctor."
"We're going to have to tell everyone, aren't we?"
"Oh, God."
"Everyone in the training room!" Tris yelled. "Five minutes!"
The lovely sound of annoyed teenagers filled the room and we laughed, walking from the room hand in hand. Back in the training room, they slowly filed in.
I walked around the chalkboard and began to write the rankings down as Tris explained what was going on. Everyone seemed a little more tense than usual, which was pretty normal, considering they were finding out if they'd done good or bad over the past month.
"And here are your rankings."
I moved so that they could see them.
Anders
Parris
Caspian
Lee
Cordelia
Wanda
Luella
Franny
Cleopatra
Amory
There were many hushed whispers.
Amory had burst into tears, and Tris threw a look at me. I cleared my throat and got their attention. I needed to explain this once again, apparently.
"These rankings only tell you how you're doing in Dauntless," I said. "You will not be kicked out unless you specifically break our faction's rules or we believe you are truly unworthy of joining us. You could also leave on your own accord, but I advise you not to panic; there is still another stage left for you to succeed in. Many initiates do better in it than in the physical stage."
After everyone was dismissed for the day, Lee and Luella caught up to us as we were cleaning out the guns.
"Hey, uhm, we had a question," Lee said.
Tris tilted her head. "Ask away."
"Do you think you could help us privately? Like tutor us? Just until we're doing better."
Tris and I shared a look; it wasn't common for an instructor to give private lessons, but it also wasn't illegal. I turned back to the girls.
"Meet us here tonight," I said. "Ten o'clock."
"Oh, thank you so much!" Luella laughed. Then, Tris's ring caught her eye. "You're engaged?"
"We are."
"Congratulations!"
When the girls left, Tris wrapped her arms around my waist. My hand naturally went to rest on her stomach. If anyone walked in, I'd definitely move it though. I felt like the action was a little obvious to anyone and everyone.
"That went well."
I nodded. "It did."
We decided to go on to lunch, where we sat down at the table with our small group of friends. Tris discreetly stole some of my lunch and I immediately found myself wondering if it was due to the pregnancy.
That really reminded me that I knew nothing about babies at all.
I really needed to study up on pregnancy. That way I'd at least have a small idea of what Tris was going and would go through.
Even though I knew very little about the subject, I did know that if Tris was five weeks pregnant, then she was in her second month of pregnancy. That meant we had about… what? Seven months until we got to meet the baby? Yeah, that sounded right.
"So, did the initiates freak out like ours did?" Uriah asked.
Tris shrugged. "There was some crying, but not really any breakdowns. At least not that we saw."
"Do you think anyone will hurt themselves?" Christina whispered. "Like Al?"
Silence.
Al was a sensitive topic that didn't come up much. Honestly? I felt guilty for his death, but my guilt was nowhere near as intense as Tris's.
I slipped an arm around Tris's waist. She relaxed at the touch.
"It could happen. It happens every year," Zeke said.
"We can't prevent it," Uriah said. "It's not our fault if it happens."
"I yelled at Al before he did it," Tris said, quietly. "I told him I'd kill him if he came anywhere near me. And.. then he died."
"Al tried to kill you. That's not your fault, Tris," Christina said.
Tris did not look convinced. Her expression was that of someone in physical pain, and I felt horrible. Her pain was my pain, and my pain was her pain.
Lightening the mood, Zeke asked, "So. Are you two.."
Rolling her eyes, Tris held up her ring. Zeke fist pumped and high fived me, while everyone else just congratulated us and asked us endless questions about the future wedding. For now, we knew nothing about it. Maybe we'd simply elope.
"One year and you're getting married," Will joked. "What's next? A baby?"
We both froze, as did Christina and Shauna.
I shrugged it off. "Nope."
Tris squeezed my hand underneath the table, relaxing her body. Christina and Shauna shot me knowing looks, and I just grinned as I continued eating.
That night, Tris and I went down to the training room.
We were an hour away from when the girls were supposed to meet us, so we did workouts of our own. I watched Tris like a hawk. She did not need to push her body right now. It was bad for the baby and for her.
Lee and Luella came prepared, five minutes before ten.
Tris and I had been taking a break, laughing and talking. The girls both looked like Dauntless. Good.
"Hey, girls," Tris said, waving them over. "Okay! What do you two want to work on first?"
"Uhm.. fighting," Lee said.
Luella nodded. "Yeah. We're the weakest and the smallest of the group."
"Believe it or not, you can use that to your advantage," I said, grabbing their attention. "You're both smaller than most of the others, and faster. If you can manage to get the first hit in, then your chances improve immediately."
"Really?"
Lee had definitely perked up.
"Really," Tris said. "I was in your place during my initiation. And Four was my instructor."
Luella grinned. "No way."
"How did you do it?" Lee asked.
"She used her strengths to her advantage." I explained. "And it got her much farther than the others."
The girls looked much more eager to get started. We had them do the basic warm ups, and then they sparred with each other three times. Tris and I needed to get an understanding of their strengths and their weaknesses.
Lee appeared to be quicker on her feet, but weaker when throwing punches.
Luella was stronger when it came to distracting the opponent. She was sly like a fox. The downside is that she was easily distracted too.
"Luella? I'll help you over here. Lee, go with T—Six."
Luella followed me.
I crossed my arms. "You're smart, Luella. You have the ability to distract your opponent, which would let you win if you weren't distracted yourself."
"Yeah,"
"You have to learn to keep your focus on your opponent."
"How do I do that?"
"Focus." I said. "You need to focus all of your energy on the match. See your best friend? Ignore them. See a butterfly? Ignore it."
Before she could argue, I led her into the ring.
"Fight me. I want you to beat me. Put me on my ass."
She was gaping, and I saw Tris and Lee watching to the side. Luella took a deep breath and we took the proper position. She threw the first punch and missed me by an inch. I could see her bouncing on the balls of her feet.
Slowly, she began to circle me.
I quickly stuck out a foot to trip her. She caught the move and kneed me in the stomach. It brought me down for a second.
But, she'd messed up. The pride at getting a hit had stolen her attention. She was grinning at Lee.
In one swift motion, I'd pinned her to the ground. She was struggling under my grasp. Tris called the match and I helped her back up. Luella's face was flushed as she rubbed the nape of her neck.
"Don't lose focus," she said. "Got it."
