There was a knock at the door.

I set down my book—a baby book, because I didn't enjoy reading but I had a baby now, so why not—and went to answer the door. And confusingly, there was no one there, just a crumpled up letter on the ground. I picked it up.

Tris stuck her head out of the bathroom curiously.

"What was that?"

I shrugged.

Reluctantly, I un-crumpled the paper and tried my best to flatten it out completely. It took me a few minutes to get it to the point where I could actually read it. But when I did, I was left staring at it, gob-smacked.

Four,

I've heard about my granddaughter's birth, and while I'm never going to forgive you for not telling me immediately, I do have one request.

Let me see her.

Please, son.

I know your first answer will be no, but please, think about it. I don't even know her name, Tobias.

Love,

Your Mother

Tris left the bathroom, hair wet.

"I—" I said, pausing. "It's nothing, babe, probably just some stupid teenager with nothing else to do. How do you feel?"

She shrugged. "Better. Less sore for sure."

The beautiful yet horrific sounds of Eli screaming bloody murder cracked through the apartment like thunder, and Tris raised an eyebrow. Right. My turn to tend to the demon spawn we'd created by accident. So I shoved the note into my pocket and jogged up the stairs.

Sure enough, Eli was upset.

I gently picked up the wrinkly baby and held her to my chest, speaking in low tones to her. It usually worked when she was just crying. But if she was hungry or had a dirty diaper..

There were still a lot of hints I was learning.

Her wailing stopped after a few minutes of bouncing.

Tris appeared in the door. "Zeke's coming over, and I'm going to Chris's for a bit. She wants to have a girls day or something. You've got this?"

"Are you sure you're good with leaving her?"

"I've got to get used to it, Tobias. This is good practice."

"Absolutely sure?"

"Babe, I'm fine."

"Then yes, I've got this."

"Thanks. Love you."

"I love you too."

Then she was gone, the only way to know she was still home being the sound of her feet on the hard stairs. Once the front door shut, and I heard Zeke's loud voice, I knew it was going to be an.. interesting day at least. Nothing with him was ever less than that.

Eli spit up.

Grabbing a folded towel from the changing table, I gently wiped off her mouth.

Zeke ran up the stairs. "Four? Little person?"

"In here," I called, setting her against my chest. He jogged through the door. "She's decided that I'm the perfect person to harass with her bodily fluids."

"She is a baby, Mr. Prior."

"Since when did you know anything about babies?"

"Since you got Tris pregnant, dumbass."

Couldn't argue with that.

We'd all taken on a new role since Tris and I had really gotten serious about her pregnancy, and mine had just ended up being dad. And it was a lot of work. I got about half the sleep I used to. Plus with Tris still technically being in her recovery period, it was even less. I made meals, did laundry, and cleaned.

"Hello, Eli," Zeke said in a high-pitched voice. "Hello—oh, shut up, Four."

"You sound like Uri as a kid."

"I do not."

"Whatever you say, baby whisperer."

He shook his head but made sure to take Eli with him when he leaned away, putting her little body right against his chest, securing the fluffy blankets around her. I took the note out of my pocket and handed the thing to him with no context.

Eli cried out at how still he'd suddenly gone.

He kissed her head, still staring at the note. It took him a few minutes before he handed it back to me. Neither of us spoke for a moment.

"You—What did Tris say?"

"I haven't told her."

"Eli is her kid too!"

"I know, and I'm not lying to her, Z. I just.. I don't.."

"You don't want to stress her out?"

"Exactly."

"Well, I hate to break it to you, but I think you should show her. Like now."

"Now?"

"Not now, just today. Soon."

I nodded slowly, slipping it back into my pocket as I came up with a plan that I knew would work out.

Tris would probably be out for a few hours, knowing Christina, so maybe I could get her as soon as she got home. Well, no. She'd need to feed Eli. After that, maybe. It had to be good enough.

But what would I say?

Zeke bounced Eli. "You are so very chubby, little dude."

"Evelyn reached out?"

"And.."

"Four—"

"She wants to meet Eli, Tris."

Tris paused and sat down on the couch behind her, gently pulling a pillow to hold to her stomach.

We'd just got done putting our daughter down for the night, and so I'd decided that it was as good a time as any. She needed to know. Even if I didn't know what the reaction would be, I couldn't keep it a secret.

"She wants to meet her?"

"Yeah."

"Like.. in person?"

"I think that's implied, babe."

"True."

There was no response for a long couple of minutes.

I mean, what would I have said if she'd come to me with that? It probably would've been something not so calm or not so rational, or possibly both.

"I think we should let her see her."
