Chapter 21: Temporarily Parting Ways

Izuku left yesterday, leaving Asta on his own for the first time since arriving in the afterlife. It was a strange feeling waking up and just making breakfast for himself. He worked on his farm. He took a short break for lunch and went back to work. While he was digging new holes for the tomato plants, he realized that he was lonely. Asta didn't like being lonely because he had never been without someone else as his companion.

While his mother left him on the stoop of the Hage Village Church, he soon had been joined by a baby Yuno, left by the Spade Kingdom guardsman to save the young Prince's life. Yuno and Asta had been inseparable since that moment. Yuno was Asta's most important person. If anyone asked Asta bluntly if he loved Yuno, he'd tell the truth that yes, he did love Yuno.

He loved Yuno, but he hadn't realized that it was romantic love until he was nearly nineteen years old. And because Asta was an idiot, he didn't say anything, even if he suspected that Yuno felt the same. But Asta and Yuno were so focused on their goal that anything that could disrupt it was laid at the wayside. Having Yuno by his side for his whole life, no matter if he got cut short, was a blessing.

Thinking of Yuno made Asta pause in his digging to smile up at the sky to stop himself from crying.

Liebe would be mocking him about now for being a dumb sap. Liebe, his "big" brother since Asta's own mother took the young demon in, was always mocking Asta and calling Asta out for his dumb shit. Liebe also liked to call Asta "kid" despite technically being the same age. He wondered if Liebe was able to be free. After the battle in the Spade Kingdom and fighting against the Dark Triad and the upper class demons, Asta hadn't felt comfortable having the contract with Liebe since it seemed too much like a slave-master situation. Asta had Zora, Kirsch, Gauche, Nero, and Gordon break the contract and unseal Liebe from the Five-Leaf Grimoire, though Liebe chose to reside in it. Asta was glad that Liebe stayed with Asta until the end.

"Heh," said Asta. Liebe probably decided to stay around Clover to make himself a menace. He just hoped that Liebe would be smart and safe without Asta. Nero would watch Liebe, if anything, as they both were immortal to a degree. Nero had been with Asta since the Magic Knights Entrance Exams and Asta trusted her to look after everyone.

Asta plopped himself on the ground and laid down.

"I miss everyone," said Asta, covering his face with his hands.

He missed the Black Bulls, the eccentric but good people who became his second family. He missed his first family, the kids who were no longer kids in Hage, Sister Lily and Father Orsi. He missed his friends in the other Magic Knight squads—Leo, Mimosa, Klaus, and Rill.

Asta missed Noelle just as much as he missed Yuno and Liebe. Noelle had been the first friend he made his age. They were fire-forged friends, who shouldn't have ever been friends in the first place. She was a royal, a princess and he was just a magic-less orphan. Noelle had been very awkward and had a hard time expressing herself, but eventually as she gained control over her incredible amount of mana, her confidence grew. He'd have died many times, if she hadn't been there to have his back.

He loved her like he loved Yuno.

Asta never said anything to her about his feelings either, because he felt that it wasn't fair to either himself, or her, or Yuno, when Asta loved them both. They both deserved someone better than him.

"I wonder who she married," said Asta. He didn't have the courage to ask Fanzell. Whoever it was, Asta hoped that the person was good to Noelle.

He sighed and got himself up off the ground. His melancholy would pass, when Izuku returned. After all, Izuku was his companion now and Asta wasn't good on his own for too long. He always had Yuno, or Liebe, or Nero or Noelle with him.

Izuku was honest, and open and caring and generous and so it's no wonder Asta got attached.

"Heh. I am a dumb sap, huh, Liebe?"

And with that, Asta went back to work to finish the rest of his farm before Izuku returned.
