Hi vampires! I've received an email from DesertJackal who asked me about the difficulty to resist human blood. So I wanted to answer him on this blog, for all to read.

First, I'd say that since my family and I are set on not killing humans, resisting the lure of human blood is easier. I didn't say it was easy, not at all. It's easier. We value human life very highly, so humans aren't prey for us. They're sentient beings, with whole lives ahead of them, interactions to have and maybe with us at some point. Thus, ending a human life is as abhorrent to us as ending a vampire's one. After all, we all were humans before becoming vampires. Maybe killing a random human is killing your great-grandnephew or the lost relative of your old cousin? Who knows?

Second, animal blood isn't repulsive at all. When you're thirsty, it's as appealing as human blood. And believe me, I know. I'm ashamed to admit that I know what human blood tastes like. I killed humans about a century ago, and I feel deeply remorseful for that. I used to play God, and that was so wrong. Anyway, back to the scent of blood. If you taste some meek domesticated animal's blood right after a human's one, you'll be disgusted, of course. Better start with a large carnivore, whose blood's taste is closer to a human's. And by doing so, it'll slowly become easier to grow accustomed to animals' blood and resist humans' one.

And third, if you're convinced like my family and myself that we can be better as vampires than ordinary predators, however powerful, and rise above our given condition at the top of the food chain, then you'll find a new purpose in life. Resisting humans' blood means blending into the crowds, and acting like humans. Jobs, entertainment, social ties, anything becomes possible. What a strong incentive to resist, don't you think?

This blog is welcoming all points of view, we can debate calmly and constructively. Thank you for reading.

Edward Cullen

From GoldenDoc, 11.12 am: I wouldn't have said it better, Edward. Well done!

From TexanNomad, 11.45 am: Strong arguments there, Edward. But what about the pleasure given by human blood? It satiates the thirst so completely. Can animal blood do that?

From EdwardCullen, 11.48 am: I have to be honest and say that it doesn't satiate us completely, so we hunt more often than when drinking human blood. Usually we hunt animals every two weeks. But like I said, it's a matter of principle. I don't want to give in to my lowest urges, I don't want to kill humans. So I settle with animals, and I try to drink from my choice animals as often as I can. And I don't feel deprived of any pleasure. I must add that we're careful not to deplete some endangered species more than they already are.

From GrizzlyBear1915, 11.51 am: For my part, my choice animal is grizzly bear. I enjoy them a lot!

From DesertJackal, 11.59 am: Yes, GrizzlyBear1915, that was quite obvious! Thank you for your answer, Edward. I have to say that although I'm curious, I think I'm not ready to abandon my diet just yet. I don't really see humans as equals.

From GoldenDoc, 12.03 am: We can argue over that, DesertJackal, but yours is a widespread opinion among vampires. Humans are weaker and less durable than us, granted. But like Edward said, we all were human before being changed. So, were we inferior during our human life? Are we still?

From DesertJackal, 12.06 am: Interesting point of view, GoldenDoc. I'll have to think about it.

From TexanNomad, 12.25 am: I must admit that this blog is mind-rattling. I'll have to think about it too.

From SpaininAlaska, 12.33 am: You've given us much to think about, Edward. Even for me, a vegetarian hardcore! A lighter topic, next time, please?

From EdwardsMate87, 12.44 am: I'll remind him, SpaininAlaska, don't worry. Say hello to everyone for us!
