Chapter 2 The transformation into someone else

No mom!, I'm going away for 3 months, and I'm not going to tell you where, don't bother looking for me and save me the embarrassment of concerning all the people I know, this is final, as final as the divorce papers that you and dad signed without letting us know that you were having any problems and as serious as they were, this is also not a joke and I am not playing, I just want to figure things out, how I am going to live my life from now on, you were suppose to guide me but it seems that you are no longer able, your life is a mess and It's not fair for me to keep being the one who takes all the weight of your emotional traumas, after all I am an adult now, and I need to work and save money also I don't have to call you every night, stop hovering! I am going to be ok and I will call when I can— Donna screams into the public phone in front of the beauty shop, as she violently hangs up the receiver.

Donna was visibly upset, all the anger and frustration seeped from her pores, she was done and this was a new beginning. Nobody was going to make one more decision for her, she was not going to apologize for being herself, this was finally the point of no return, she was going to be free and be her own person.

As soon as she entered the beauty shop a chill traveled through her spine, she wondered if she was going to regret this? She wasn't sure about dying and cutting her long and beautiful strawberry blond hair. For a second, she stood at the entrance when a lovely brunette with chocolate skin and a nice afro greeted her.

"Hi Donna! At last you are going to let me do an extreme makeover on you! This is going to be fun!"

"Yeah Lucy, it's time to have fun and make me a new person!" Donna said with an empty smile on her face. "And if I am going to trust someone to do this it's you. After all, we have been friends since my first semester of college."

"So what do you have in mind, are we only going to cut your hair, or dye it too?"

"I am not quite sure; can you hand me a magazine to figure it out?"

"Oh my God! The mighty Donna Paulsen, who always knows what to do, is going to improvise? You are always in control, I could say that you are a control freak!" Lucy teased, smirking.

"Yup no plan whatsoever! Now hand me the magazine already and let me see what I like." Donna said with annoyance.

Lucy thought that Donna would go for anything trendy or elegant as always, but she was really shocked when Donna pointed out a girl with a pixie cut and black raven colored hair, the idea of cutting her long hair so short made Lucy uneasy, but Donna was determined.

At the end Lucy had to admit that this look wasn't so bad on Donna and definitely transformed her into a different person, someone that she wouldn't recognize on the street if she saw her, and the makeover wasn't finished yet, she had to figure out a new makeup look for her.

"And what style of makeup are you thinking of for this new character that you are creating," asked Lucy.

"I am feeling Grunge?"

"What do you mean?"

"Think smokey eyes, black liner, red lips, like Shirley Manson of garbage in the queer video."

"Are you sure? This is a little bit drastic and totally out of your comfort zone. Don't you prefer something more mellow, like Winona Ryder makeup? She is trendy."

"Nope, I am going for the grunge look and that is final, I am going to be a rebel," she smirks.

"Ok, you got it girl. At least Shirley is a redhead like you, it's going to be our private joke, you can dye the red hair but you can't take the redhead out of you –" she chuckles, "so grunge it is, but please allow me to completely cover the freckles on your face with a base, I know that you don't like to use it but it's part of the grunge look; heavy pale makeup."

"That's ok, this is something that I definitely wouldn't do and very in character with this new personality."

"Are those black industrial boots and big flannel shirt part of this new personality too?"

"Pretty much," said Donna while looking at her reflection in the mirror.

After Lucy finished the make over, Donna paid her bill, and asked if the makeup products were included and they were. As she was leaving the beauty salon, Lucy gifted her a dark blue lipstick "to get more in character" she'd said since the black one was too ominous for Donna and her complexion wasn't that dark. This makeover was a small investment but it was totally worth it, she was sure that she could recover this amount of money in no time.

She had a decent amount of savings, not much, but good enough to cover rent and living expenses in the campus dorms, but because she was not going to attend this trimester she was off the hook.

Also, she had sold some of the textbooks that she wasn't going to use and some other books like novels and dramas, classics that she enjoyed, she could always buy them back.

She also managed to sell some clothes, shoes, accessories and bags that some friends had admired and she was not sure were going to work for her any more, also she sold her stereo. She only kept her Sony Walkman CD player and some CDs; she had arranged with a friend to save some boxes with her remaining stuff. After all, she was going to return. Her bus ticket was a round trip.
