Fatima and Leilani were laughing and singing along to the radio, both slightly tipsy. They were dancing in their seats, not a care in the world. Then the car flew off the road and hit a large rock. Fatima was crying, trying to get free. She didn't have any major injuries, as far as she knew. Then she saw Leilani, barely moving. Blood was coming out of her eyes and nose, and suddenly Fatima was sober. She was panicking, trying to get to her phone. She knew she would be in huge trouble with her parents, not to mention the cops. She was scared. Scared that she would lose the woman that was like a sister to her, scared she would go to jail, everything.
Fatima jerked awake and looked around. She started crying when she processed what had happened. She crawled out of the bed and went into the bathroom, where she quickly splashed some cold water on her face. She took several deep breaths, then went back into the bedroom. She immediately crawled right into her boyfriend's arms and wiped a tear.
"Hey, baby," Devin whispered. Fatima made a soft noise that sounded like a mix between a whimper and a grunt. "What's wrong, sweetheart?" he asked nervously.
"I had a really bad dream," she whispered, crying again. Rountree softened and sat up a little. He pulled her close and kept his arms wrapped firmly around her waist.
"Talk to me," he whispered. Fatima sniffled and buried herself in his arms. Devin was starting to get a bad feeling abut the content of her nightmare. "Please? Baby girl?" he pleaded softly. Fatima made the same noise again and started sobbing. Rountree panicked and started running his hand through her hair.
"I don't want to talk, can we just snuggle?" she whispered, wiping a stray tear. Devin softened and curled up next to her again. He gently pulled the blankets over them and smiled gently. Fatima smiled and closed her eyes again.
"Wake me up if you need anything else, okay?" he whispered.
"I don't want to go to sleep," Fatima whispered, tears in her eyes.
"We have to go to work in the morning, baby. We don't have to go to sleep, but we need to be curled up. I don't want you to be tired tomorrow," he murmured. Fatima wrapped her arms around his waist and smiled. They shared another kiss.
"Night," Fatima whispered.
"Night, beautiful." Rountree whispered. Fatima hugged him tighter and opened her eyes. She wanted to talk about her nightmare. She wanted her boyfriend to know that this one wasn't like the others, that this one would haunt her for days, or weeks, or even months. She sniffled and hugged him even more. "Baby?" he asked softly. "You okay?" he asked. Fatima shook her head.
"I had a nightmare about the car accident," she whispered. Devin softened and wrapped his arms around her.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" he asked. Fatima shook her head and sniffled.
"It was like watching her die all over again," Fatima sobbed.
"Oh, baby," he whispered, tears in his eyes. He felt like something inside him broke from hearing her so upset. "Would it help if we got ice cream and looked at pictures?" he asked softly. Fatima thought about it and nodded a little. "Yeah? You wanna do that?" he asked softly.
"Yeah," Fatima said, her voice barely a whisper.
"Alright. Let's go," he said gently.
