"Ugh, of all the times to get a tear in your false tail, it had to be over Scotland!" Hiccup groaned and threw up his hands before dragging them down his face in frustration. "How am I going to find anything to fix it?" Toothless shrugged and warbled something that kinda resembled "I don't know". Hiccup sighed before turning to the third member of their party, Zak Storm, sitting idly on Toothless' saddle. "You know, you can help."
Zak blinked. "Help with what? You're the engineer that invented this whole contraption in the first place."
"I meant you can help look. I'm not asking you to help me fix it."
Zak groaned as he slid off Toothless' back. "Oh, fine. But where should we look, oh dear brother? We managed to crash in the thick of the forest."
"I know, I know, we're lost, without a doubt. But if we keep walking, we should run into someone soon."
Zak groned. "But that could take hours! And I'll be very hungry before then."
Hiccup sighed. "We'll try to find a town before then, we've got to. Someone put up that ring of stones. I think it's important, so they wouldn't have the village too far from where it sits."
"But what if we're going in the wrong direction?"
Hiccup let out a huff. "If we don't come across anybody in the next two hours, we'll turn around, head back to the stones, and take a different direction."
Zak groaned loudly. "That's going to take hours!"
Hiccup rolled his eyes. "You don't say?"
Zak groaned exasperatedly before his face brightened. "Wait, I have an idea!" The group paused as Hiccup and Toothless glanced at him with curiosity. Zak turned to Toothless. "Can you sniff out people, Toothless?"
"What? Why would …"
Toothless bobbed his head.
Zak jumped and cheered. "That should make things go by much faster! Come on, Hiccup! He can run faster than both of us!" He quickly climbed back onto Toothless' saddle.
"Hey! He's my dragon!"
"But it was my idea. Do you want to find some leather to fix his tail and get home, or what?"
Hiccup sighed, then groaned. "Oh, fine." He quickly climbed onto Toothless's back and Toothless bounded through the forest. He paused every few minutes to sniff around before heading off.
"I think he smells someone!" Zak shouted when Toothless began bounding in one direction rather quickly.
"You think?" came Hiccup's snarky comment.
"Whoa!" both boys shouted as Toothless slid to a halt by a rock.
"Why are we stopping by a rock?" Zak scratched his head.
"Maybe because your dragon smelled me," quipped a feminine voice. The two yelped and turned their heads, searching all over for the owner of the voice. They heard a sigh. "Up here, boys." The two glanced up, and saw a young girl, her red curls cascading down her back in a ponytail. She was leaning on her hands, watching them from a ledge.
"Oh! What are you doing up there?" Zak asked.
"Oh, you know, just enjoying the view of two wee lost lambs looking like idiots," she replied. Hiccup's face changed from surprise to annoyance. "But if you really must know, I'm stuck, that's what."
"How did you get stuck?'" asked Zak.
She sighed. "A dead branch fell on me, and it's too heavy for me to move."
Zak's eyes widened. "Oh! We'll help! Come on, Hic!" Hiccup sighed, but he followed Zak up the ledge. There was a rather thick branch laying across the young lady's back. Hiccup began to worry that it had hit her hard. Toothless climbed up as well, and he three quickly got to work. They were able to move the branch without hurting her further.
Zak went to her and gave her a hand up. "Are you alright?"
She nodded as she dusted off her dress. "Perfectly fine."
"How is that possible?" asked Hiccup. "That branch was heavy enough to break your back!"
The young lady sighed. "I'm under a curse, alright? Because of this curse, I can't get hurt very often."
"You're cursed?" Zak blurted. "What kind of curse?"
She let out a soft growl. "I don't want to talk about it. What were you three doing in these woods anyway?"
"We're lost," replied Zak.
"No! Our dragon's fake fin got ripped up and we're looking for some leather to fix it. Then we'll leave."
She glanced at the damaged tail fin before looking at the boys. "I'm heading to the Witch Carver, she might have some leather you can use."
"Witch Carver?" muttered Hiccup.
"Are you hoping she can get rid of your curse?" asked Zak.
The girl sighed. "I hope so."
"But what if she doesn't have any leather?" Hiccup asked.
"Then she'll definitely know someone who will. She knows a bunch of people," replied the girl.
"Well, it's a start," said Hiccup. He held out his hand. "I'm Hiccup Haddock, and this is my step-brother, Zak Storm."
She shook hands with them. "I'm Merida Dunbroch, nice to meet you. And thanks for helping me."
"No problem, you're helping us now."
"Consider it payback, I'm honor-bound to help you."
"Great, shall we be off? The faster we get to the Witch Carver, the faster Hiccup can fix Toothless's tail and we can head home."
America nodded. "Agree. Come on." She turned, and led them off the ledge and further into the woods.
