"Mother! Father!"
It was cool in the small hall. The two words fell into the darkness like a stone down a deep drilled well. Keigo threw another.
"Mother? Father?"
Nothing. Even the tick of the clock from the living room had ceased. There were tracks on the floor but they didn't look normal, they were messy and red, indicating signs of a struggle perhaps? Keigo found it odd, was Father in a mood again?
The creaking of the floorboards sounded beneath his feet as he walked. The sudden darkening of the sunlight from outside caused a sudden surge of panic as the inside of the house was plunged into darkness. Then came the sounds, like bone breaking apart or someone's spine being snapped in half.
He turned, seeing only another column of darkness before him. Feeling a pair of eyes on him, making him clutch his Endeavor doll a bit tighter. "M-...mother?" He called, daring to creep closer. "F-father?"
The face he saw wasn't that of either of his parents. It was-
"Hi Keigo." It said, a figure stepping out from the darkness.
Keigo blinked and looked again. He could barely credit what he saw; it was like something from a made-up story, or a movie where you know the animals will talk and dance. If he had been maybe ten years older, he would not have believed what he was seeing, but he was not yet twenty. He was only ten.
There was a girl in his house, standing before him. The light was far from good, the sunlight still obscured by what might have been clouds but Hawks eyesight was good enough where he was sure of what he saw. It was a girl with hair the same shade of blonde as his and eyes an oddly mesmerizing red.
The girl held a doll to her chest just as Keigo clutched his Endeavor one. Hers was more worn and torn than his, with stringy yarn-like hair and buttons sewn on for eyes. It had no fingers and little more than a patch of cloth for clothing, the same pattern that was on his mother's shirt last night came to mind.
In her other hand was a gold chain-no, a locket, Keigo realized.
"Looking for your parents, Keigo? They invited me in to play with you saying they had an errand to run, I'm your neighbor."
There was a noticeable chill in the air that wasn't present second before, making him suddenly shiver. His parents...wanted him to play? It was a hellbound struggle just getting his mother to get him his Endeavor doll, his sole possession. But...his heart stuttered at the thought of finally, finally interacting with someone his own age. Of finally being allowed to play!
"Would you like to play Keigo?" The girl asked, head tilted innocently, smiling.
Keigo smiled back. He couldn't help it; it was the kind of smile you just had to answer. "I sure do," he said.
The girl laughed. "'I sure do," she repeated. "That's good! That's very good! Would you like to come over to my house afterward?"
She held her one hand out, the same one holding the locket. She was still smiling at him.
"Well... sure!" He reached forward... and then drew his hand reluctantly back. "Except...I'm not supposed to really go out anywhere. My dad said so." He admitted, dejected.
"Oh, how come?" The girl asked, a smile still in place. 'How,' Keigo wondered, 'could I have thought her eyes were red?' They were in fact a bright, golden yellow. The same color of his own eyes, the perfect mirror image to him.
"Where did you say my parents were?" Keigo asked, more worried for her safety rather than his. Maybe she misunderstood what his parents had meant and came in uninvited?
A stillness followed his words, accompanied by the soft, almost muted sound of something dripping close by.
Keigo's eyes began to wander then, noticing what he didn't before. Looking down and seeing the white hem of the girl's dress stained an eerily similar red as the tracks on the floor in the hall. What happened next was a blur.
He glanced to the side, eyes widening as a horror that was very nearly awe washed over him making his lips part and the color drain from his face. His golden orbs landed on the sight of his mother. Her flesh and clothes were ripped clean off of her body, leaving the mess of blood tissue, muscle and cartilage underneath to breathe. Watching in muted horror as her mouth hung open in a scream that never made it past her bloodied lips, drowned out by the horrible gnashing sound of sharp, jagged teeth biting into her head ripped a chunk of everything inside and out clean off while the other half went splattering against the walls; The gore brought a wave of sickness within that went far beyond any physical retching.
"Keigo?" He didn't even try to stop the hot tears racing down his cheeks feeling his legs quiver. Flinching underneath the cold, bloodstained fingers suddenly caressing his cheek, leading his gaze back onto the girl in front of him. "Shh, don't be afraid, I'm not going to hurt you." Keigo stared back at her, feeling so very numb. "I promise, it's just-I've wanted to meet you for so very long, that's all." The smile is still there on her face though now looks a bit more unhinged while she steps forward, his own feet skidding back with each move towards him. "You see I'm your-AAH!?"
Keigo's survival instincts kicked in, knowing he would only have seconds. With a pang of regret, he stabbed his Endeavor doll straight into her one eye before making a mad dash...somewhere in the house. He didn't care where, so long as it was away from that demon. He tripped feeling something sharp and strong grip onto his ankle, jerking him back and causing him to fall.
"Keigo!? Keigo, wait! Come back! Come back, please!" The girl's voice distorted into something unnatural, powerful enough to shake the whole house and send terror rushing through his veins. "Keigo! Keigo! KEI-" He turned to run, barely making it a step before something latched onto one of his ankles just starting to drag him back when his quirk flared, feathers sharpening and shooting out. He tumbled to the hardwood floor, gasping, struggling to get the dots swimming in his vision out of the way.
The girl, Keigo realized with a dawning horror, was clearly not normal. Daring to look over his shoulder seeing and internally screaming as her hand-rather, where her hand should have been before getting cleanly cut off by his feathers-grew back, coated with the same crimson substance now spreading across the kitchen floors; Her eyes that seconds ago had seemed so innocent and playful were now fixed on him, cold rage brewing in the slanted crimson-red orbs. Keigo thought his heart might have stopped.
"I had hoped to avoid using force," she murmured, not taking her eyes off him. "No matter, it's better this way, really...I'll teach you to obey, little bird."
"AHHH!"
Keigo bolted upright in a cold sweat, eyes blown wide as he frantically scanned his room. His heart was racing. The panic lingering even after confirming that yes, he was still in his 'room' within the Commission building. There were no signs of that god-awful red splattered on any of the walls or floor, and he was alone.
He swallowed, nervously fisting the edge of his covers. His thoughts momentarily go back to his earlier glimpse of Dante, not fully recovered from the eerie chill that went up along his spine in the other man's presence. Looking At Keigo at one point like he was staring down an enemy, it was...frightening, to say the least.
He blinked, swallowing the lump that had risen in his throat taking another look around. There was no endeavor doll to hold for comfort and no parents to help soothe his worries; He hated being alone, truly. Still, deep down he wanted to be a hero, someone who could ensure no one ever went through what he did.
Solitude was a small price to pay for that, right?
~x~
It wasn't that Izuki preferred solitude, more like...she couldn't handle meeting so many new people in one day.
'Kai's pretty okay though.' She found herself thinking while looking at said boy, only to blush a moment later.
In her haste(cowardice) she had simply thrown her favorite All Might blankie over both of them, as though it were a magical shield meant to protect them. It did not. And when it was abruptly pulled off Izuki panicked, scurrying to hide(cower) behind Kai instead. The slightly older boy didn't even flinch, no doubt in her mind he could feel her shaking like a leaf in the wind.
"Huh? Who are you?" A voice-definitely female and upbeat-inquired.
Izuki's brain short-circuited, unable to formulate a reply. Thankfully Kai saved her from embarrassment.
"When asking someone their name, it's polite to give yours first." Kai stated, not sounding rude or disinterested despite his rather bland expression and deadened eyes. The girl blinked tilting her head before smiling, her bluebell eyes sparkling.
"My name's Patty! Patty Lowell," she says, holding out a hand.
"Kai. This," he started to say, golden eyes sparring a quick glance over his shoulder at the shy-looking Izuki peeking out," is Izuki. Pleased to make your acquaintance."
"I didn't know there would be other kids here." Patty said, easily hopping onto the now vacant spot on the couch beside Kai.
"I didn't know I would be here either tonight." Kai says and Patty seems to think it's his attempt at a joke because she laughs.
"Are you two brother and sister? Do your parents work here or something?" With every question Patty is slowly leaning forward, and all Izuki can see and feel are hateful glares and the sharp end of a weapon before Kai is gently prodding her to move, sandwiching himself between her and Patty it seemed, leaving her wrapped in her All Might blanket while answering Patty.
"No, I'm-" Kai pauses for a fraction of a second, brows furrowed into a more thoughtful look. "I'm just visiting."
While Kai conversed with Patty, distracting her from Izuki's presence, the green-eyed girl couldn't help but overhear bits of the conversation going on in the other room; Hearing both her uncle Morrison's exasperated words and her father's own tired, casual rebuttals. The two adults move in to discuss an apparent 'job' received from the Commission.
"Dante, are you listening?" She hears Morrison ask.
"Yeah, I heard you. And I said I can't, I've already made plans for tomorrow, plans that don't involve babysitting some snot-nosed brat." Dante said back as calm as he could manage, followed by Morrison's groan.
"Oh yeah, then what's with the kid sitting out on the couch with Izuki? Pretty fuckin sure Lady and you weren't expecting." Morrison threw out with a snort. "'Sides, like I said, this one came straight from the Commission, they say it's urgent."
Izuki tucks herself deeper into her blanket, feeling saddened all of a sudden. A part of her already resigned to Dante accepting the mission, not really blaming anyone, they needed to make a living after all and it's not like her father never spends time with her or anything. Lately though, there just seems to be more missions that require him specifically and Izuki can't say she's fond of it.
As though sensing her sudden drop in mood, Kai suddenly shifts the topic of conversation. "If you're asking about heroes-" he says a bit louder, directing the question to Patty "-Izuki's the real expert, even more so than that new movie," the boy says, eyes flitting over to the still going interview. "She can tell you pretty much all you need to know about any hero, possibly anywhere."
"Whoa, no way! Really?" Patty exclaimed, looking over at Izuki who looked a little less nervous now.
None of the kids noticed the pair of watchful dual-colored eyes peeking out from the kitchen, with Lady ducking back around just as Kai seemed to look over. The gun-wielding heroine let a small smile bloom across her face as she re-entered the conversation that was happening.
"-wouldn't be fair to Izuki!" Dante was saying, his annoyance starting to show. And Lady herself would be lying if she said she wasn't feeling a little irked as well, especially after seeing how excited Izuki had been at the prospect of going to the museum for the first time.
"I don't like it either, but they say this isn't one that can be passed on unfortunately." Morrison says, sounding resigned himself.
"Maybe Inko can-" Trish starts, only to see Morrison already shaking his head in the negative.
"She can't take her. She's taking a family member to have some procedure done at the hospital, and she already told me it's gonna be an all day thing too." He winces a bit, seeing the troubled frowns etched across the married couples faces.
"Isn't there anyone else you can ask? Another adult?" Morrison asks, looking over all three of them.
None of them could think of anyone off the top of their heads, with Dante away on the job; Lady and Trish looking into Pluto and Morrison doing some digging of his own, there was no one Lady could think of to-
"Hang on a sec!" Lady exclaimed, suddenly beaming. "I think I might know someone actually…"

"Katsuki! Hurry up so we can get dinner!" Mitsuki hollered into the hotel room, already hearing her son yelling out a few cusses while he finished getting his shoes on. A tick mark formed on her brow, wondering for what seemed like the hundredth time that week where the heck had her son learned such foul language.
Surely, it wasn't her!
"Stop screaming at yourself and get out here, you brat!" She yelled again, half-tempted to stomp her way in there and drag him out.
"Don't yell at me, you old hag!" Katsuki shouted back. Within seconds, the two dissolved into their usual screaming match.
Back in the hallway, Mistuki's husband, Masaru, was waiting patiently for the mother and son duo. A nervous peal of laughter came from his lips as his son finally came stomping out being pulled by his ear before receiving a slap to the back of his head for calling his mother a hag once again. He never quite understood where the two of them got such energy from.
"Honestly, your father and I were nice enough to include you, even letting you have an entire hotel room to yourself and this is the thanks I get? Little brat!" Mitsuki cursed, walking towards the elevator along with her son and husband.
"It's your fault, hag! Yelling like a banshee, then hitting me!" Katsuki fired back, meeting his mother's own heated gaze with a vicious snarl as they walked, earning quite a few stares.
"Say that again, you damn little ingrate!" By now, the mother and son were almost pressing their foreheads together with sparks flying around them. Neither even noticed when Mitsuki's cellphone, which she handed to Masaru, started to ring. Masaru let out a weary sigh before deciding to answer it.
"Hello, Masaru Bakugo speaking. Who may I ask is calling?" He asked politely.
A few moments passed, in which Mitsuki and Katsuki continued throwing verbal jabs at each other — with Masaru continuing to tune them out. Finally, he spoke, raising his voice a bit to be heard over the other two. "Mitsuki, there's a phone call for you. Said they're from the...Devil May Cry Agency?"
"What? The old hag doesn't know anyone from that place." Katsuki was quick to throw in his two cents, and received another swift clout to the back of his head before Mitsuki went over and took the phone.
"Hello, this is Mitsuki Bakugo speaking," she said, a bit confused as to who and why she would be getting a call from such a high-ranking hero agency to begin with. The seconds ticked by, with her son and husband watching curiously. They were soon stunned upon seeing the slow widening of their matriarch's eyes, followed by Mitsuki's shocked words.
"Uh, s-sure...I-i mean, yes of course! Katsuki and I would love to," Katsuki's eyes narrowed suddenly. "Sure, sure uh..L-Lady, was it? Um, what time would you like us to be there?"
'Lady?' Katsuki thought, surely his mom was talking about the Lady; The very same Lady who was married to the professional hero Dante; Dante who supposedly was one of very few-possibly even the only one-to be able to hold his own physically against All Might, if the rumors were true.
There was no fucking way. The hag didn't know her, much less her husband. Katsuki would be the first to fucking find out if she did. Only...she was still talking on the phone, eyes blown impossible wide with whatever was being said on the other end-
"Izuki? F-from the diner? Yeah I remember."
With that, his mind screeched to a sudden halt. The recent memory of a girl coming to the forefront of his young mind, scowling as he recalled her constant mutterings and how she would give out a small 'eep!' of fright whenever their eyes met.
'What does she matter?' Katsuki thought, curious.
"U-um sure, but uh I-I thought tickets for that were, well...sold out?" Mitsuki said, she was now starting to overcome her shock a bit and smiling sheepishly into the phone. "O-oh! Of course...of course!"
"Hey, what's sold out, you old hag!?" Katsuki demanded, never being one for patience and grabbing on this mother's pants leg.
She shooed him away but he refused to budge, just about to start kicking her instead when she finally hung up.
"Mitsuki, who was that? Is something wrong?" Masaru asked, watching the way his wife blinked absent-mindedly down at her phone with worry shining in his eyes. Part of him is concerned that perhaps Katsuki may have inadvertently done something to offend someone...again.
"Oi brat," Mitsuki says looking down at her now fuming son with a strange look in her eyes. "You watch heroes, right?"
Katsuki glared. "Well, duh!"
"Well then, you're gonna love this, little gremlin…"
Katsuki didn't like the knowing, teasing smirk his mom had on her face. He felt like she was trying to one-up him.
Like hell he was going to take the bait though, huffing and turning. Stomping the rest of the way to the elevator and ignoring his mother and father's shouts to come back.
"Oi, Katuski…!"
'Who needs family?' He thought, annoyed.
~x~
"Family? What's that?"
Malicious ruby-red eyes looked up and towards a figure only she could see. Either oblivious or uncaring of the dripping red staining around her mouth and spilling off her fingers. Pausing only when she heard the other utter that strange word, offering a single old-looking photograph' It was wrinkled and yellowed from the passage of time, staining at the corners too.
She took it with a look of disinterest before glancing at the two small figures standing next to each other in the middle, one she recognized as herself while the other-
"Who is this?" She felt something stir inside of her.
"Come now child, do you truly not recognize your own brother?"
Those same red eyes were now looking down from one of the higher rooftops in the vicinity, blonde hair dancing in the wind.
From their vantage point they could see into the windows along the one side of the Commission building that lingered on the edge of town, head tilting some as they studied a familiar looking head of tousled blonde hair. They felt that same strange, gnawing sensation in their gut, eyes trailing over the cluster of beautiful blood-red feathers on his back.
"Brother, huh…?" The whisper carried on the wind, tinged with something dark and foreboding.
"Don't talk now, Keigo. Don't say a fucking word, understand?"
Cruel ruby-red eyes stared into the wet, shining golden ones. A few tousled strands of hair falling forward against his brow, his shoulders convulsing as he struggled to look anywhere that wasn't drenched in feathers or blood. A part of her hated having to be so cruel, so merciless but he just wouldn't listen! He wouldn't stop crying and screaming, wouldn't stop resisting.
"You're going to come with me," she couldn't say what exactly made her voice crack. Maybe it was finally seeing him in the flesh after so many years with nothing but a damn picture to go by. Or maybe it was the thought of that fucking bitch trying to keep them apart, trying to take what was so rightfully hers! Either way she let herself reach for him, blood-soaked fingers touching his warmer, more tan flesh. Pulling him in close and refusing to loosen her hold, even when he whimpered.
"Shh, there's nothing to worry about. I'll protect you. I'll keep you safe. I'll-"
She stopped herself from recalling the memory any further. Something bitter starting to swell up inside her. It was too painful.
She didn't see the feather coming back then, didn't consider the possibility that he would dare refuse her after everything that happened. Unable to comprehend the sense of betrayal and loss when he made it out the door and ran. She was so enraged she ripped the counter up from the floor and threw it at one of the walls before attempting to give chase.
Only it became too much of a risk. Kei...Hawks used his quirk at one point to rescue some humans who almost died in a car accident.
He was taken out of reach when the Commission became involved. Unable to get close without drawing unwanted attention.
If she tried, Dante would be the one stepping in and it didn't matter how many casualties she could cause in the process, he'd put her down just like he had her father. If he found out who she was, hell, half the whole damn demon world might just help.
Even so, even if she had no one to turn to she refused to give up. Keigo was all she had left in this world, so if she had to drag him into the depths of hell, kicking and screaming then she would. God help those foolish enough to stand in her way.
So the anime recently covered another characters backstory and it got me thinking; In terms of backstory, whose do you think is the saddest and why? And if it's a villain, do you think they're entitled to redemption? What about potential family members?
Also, as thanks to everyone for sticking around while I go back and do some re-writing and re-hashing of things, I'll give a special drabble via PM for reviewers that both ties into the above question and teases something for a future arc.(Spoiler-free!)
Don't forget to review! It seriously does help motivate me to write~3
