Wind rustled the dry, dead leaves past the small cave the two legacies had decided to camp out in. Their two backpacks, now soaked, were hung up empty near the burning fire.
Random objects and necessities were scattered near the fire as well - random books, spare clothes, pencils, socks, toilet paper, underwear, soap, non perishables - though they were dry as if someone had sucked the water out.
As the wind blew leaves and dead grass and small rocks into the entrance of the cave, both legacies leaned against the curved stone wall, dry, both exhausted.
"So, Ms. Bubbles can dry everything but backpacks?" Solace's voice was teasing, already feeling a bond with Athena's and Poseidon's legacy child.
"Ms. Bubbles," She responded tiredly. "Is an eleven year old child who finally fell asleep for maybe an hour before having to wake up and run for thirty six hours, meanwhile trying to save your sorry butt."
"You sure?"
The black haired child rolled her eyes. "Yes. I also sleep. Wake me up if something happens, I'll take watch in six hours. I need sleep."
Lee poked the coals. He would need to add fuel soon, but even then it had only been about two hours, maybe four, since Jennifer had fallen asleep.
The backpacks were mostly dry when he heard it - a stead tapping as if someone were walking toward the cave. The cave had several off roots, different corridors that led deeper into the mountain. It wasn't unusual, especially because wolves and other animals in this area were now common.
But something was off, the way that the footsteps seemed hesitant, the way they were light and didn't seem quite human.
Nervously Solace grabbed his sword, positioning himself to be in front of Jennifer.
She stirred, her eyes opening partly. "Wha' happenin,'" She mumbled. Lee hesitated - he knew that she had done her best but would, unfortunately, be dead weight if she didn't get sleep.
Deciding that if it was a rouge monster they could easily kill it, and allow her to go back to sleep, he answered uneasily, "Somethings coming from the right tunnel."
"Seriously?" She grumbled, already making her way to her feet.
"Uh-huh."
A growling came from the tunnel Lee had pointed to, and Jennifer grew uneasy. Most monsters didn't make that sound, and the animals now local in the area didn't live in caves to her knowledge.
"My tunnel!" The voice hissed, "Mine!"
Jennifer blinked. "Snakes or wolves can talk?" She whispered to Lee, who looked at her eyebrows raised.
"You really do need sleep."
"I'm not a snake! I'm a-"
"No, you fool! Shut up!" This time it was a girl's voice, different from the more boy-like voice from before.
Lee paused, then decided that they could have attacked already if that was the goal. "Come here," he called.
"How can we trust you?" The girl's voice asked carefully.
"Are you a legacy?" Jen blurted.
One of them whimpered, and they seemed to debate even saying anything. From what Jen could hear - which wasn't much - they were hungry and starving and cold. Then the younger one, the boy, came running forward, followed closely by the girl.
There was just one thing odd.
They were wolves.
Dun dun dun! Anyway, if your reading this, do you think the chapters are good lengths? Have a good day/night/evening/morning!
