Introduction [High Chaparral Tucson, AZ, Fall 1880]

Doña Victoria Montoya de Cannon writes….

Our trip to Los Angeles made me see so many things! John and I heard the stories. We have seen paintings and pine cones. Blue has drawn pictures. Now we have seen the actual places! We have eaten in the Tavern Victoria. We stayed at the Rancho Vega. John, Manolito and Don Ricardo found the Rancho Henche's site and the original tree. We visited the resting places. If only Don Carlos and his children had been better hosts. ¡Ay! Poor Angelina! Well, she will not deal with that any longer!

Angelina waits for the new tavern. She liked Blue's drawings. (She does not know he drew them. But we will keep that a secret from her. ¿Entienden Uds.?) We have talked to her. There are men in town who build it. We cannot wait for it to open.

Now we prepare to move Papa from Tucson's small cemetery to La Catedral de Asunción in Hermosillo. Miguel has blessed the move. Don Ricardo has sent a telegram to the local coffin maker. We will keep Papa in his oak coffin for now. He will have a mahogany one for his burial next to Mama.

We will also talk to the Santiago y Amistads again. What will Consul Ortiz offer? We want to know!

There are the grandchildren. They decided that this was their time. ¡Dios Mio!
