Final chapter of pure fluff for a little bit. Next week we get into the drama! This is also a shorter chapter, but it's also over 2,000 words, so I hope that makes up for it. There's some pretty heavy allusions to sex, but nothing graphic. Thank you all for the lovely comments, I seriously thrive off of those!
"Hey, guys?"
When Dick led Regan into the room where his family were all sitting around, he felt his girlfriend's hand tighten around his own. He tightened his hand in response for just a moment, if only to make sure she knew that he wasn't going to leave her.
Bruce sat in an armchair, wearing black slacks and a dark blue button-down. Damian was on the floor, Titus's big head in his lap. Jason sat on one end of the plush-looking, could probably hold ten people on it, couch, a pillow in his lap, and a tug-toy in his hand. Gracie was happily playing with the tug-toy, giving Jason a good workout by pulling on it. Tim was on the other end of the couch with a laptop on his lap, typing away.
On the television was a movie, Ocean's Eleven by the looks of things. But at Dick's voice, three out of the four men looked up. And then Regan realized she had three pairs of eyes on her.
"Everyone, this is Regan," Dick said, "my girlfriend. Regan, this is Bruce, Jason, Tim, and Damian." He pointed to everyone as he introduced them.
Bruce was the first to get up, a warm smile on his face. "Regan, it's nice to finally meet you," he said, shaking her hand. "Dick's told us wonderful things."
"He's told me wonderful things about you, as well, Mr. Wayne," Regan responded.
Bruce laughed. "Please, call me Bruce, Mr. Wayne was my father."
"Alright," Regan said, looking up at Dick questioningly. He merely shrugged.
"You're the owner of Gracie?" Damian asked, getting up from the floor.
"Yes?" Regan asked, confused. "You're Damian, right?"
"Obviously," Damian said dryly. He looked Regan up and down, causing her to look up at Dick, if only to try and escape his scrutinizing green gaze. "I suppose you're adequate," the thirteen year old finally said.
"Damian!" Dick exclaimed. "Be nice, man."
"No, Dick, it's alright," Regan said, laying a soothing hand on his chest. "He said I'm adequate, that's a good thing!"
Damian simply rolled his eyes and sat back down, moving his attention back to his dog.
Jason, having watched this entire conversation go down, was grinning. "Dickie, you better hold on to this one, she's way too good for you!" moving the pillow off his lap, he dropped Gracie's toy and got up, hand outstretched. "I'm Jason, the better, good-looking son."
Regan, an amused smile bringing her lips up, shook his hand. "Nice to meet you, Jason."
"You as well," Jason's blue eyes twinkled with mischief in a similar way Dick's often did, even though they weren't actually related. "Your dog is awesome, by the way."
"Thanks," Regan blushed.
"Okay, Jase, I think that's enough flirting with my girlfriend for one day," Dick said, blue eyes narrowing ever so slightly.
Regan had to hide a chuckle behind her hand, sharing an amused look with Jason. She'd never leave Dick for someone else, let alone one of his brothers, but his show of jealousy was kind of adorable.
"Alright, alright," Jason said, going back to his seat. "You win. No more flirting with the girlfriend. Regan, was a pleasure to meet you."
"You too," Regan said, that amused smile still on her face.
Dick looked at Tim, then. Tim hadn't looked up the entire time, intent on working on whatever was on his screen. He had deep bags under his blue eyes, and a cup of coffee on the side table next to him.
"Hey Tim!" Dick said, making the boy jump in surprise.
"Y-yeah?" Tim asked, his eyes quickly focusing on his oldest brother.
"I'd like you to meet my girlfriend, Regan?" Dick said, eyebrows raised as he looked at the younger boy. "Remember?"
"Oh, yeah, right, sorry," Tim said, closing his laptop. His gaze slid from his brother to Regan, then, finally seeming to actually notice her presence. "Um, nice to meet you, I'm Tim."
"Hi, Tim, nice to meet you too," Regan smiled. "Dick tells me you're practically a walking fun fact generator."
Tim smiled slightly. "Did you know that Hawaiian style pizza was actually invented in Canada?"
Regan nodded, impressed. "That is a fun fact, yeah," she said. Tim grinned, and then went right back to his computer.
"Okay, well, Rae, I'll take you on a tour, then, I guess," Dick said, as his family went back to what they were all doing. "Gracie!"
The lab mix had gone back to playing with Jason, but upon hearing Dick call her name, dropped the tug-toy and joined the couple.
"Hi, Gracie," Regan said, dropping down into a crouch to greet her dog. Gracie happily licked her face, tail wagging. "Yeah, I missed you, too."
"Come on, I'll show you around the manor," Dick said, finally pulling her out of the room. He showed her the library, the living room they used for interviews, and even the kitchen, where Regan happily taste-tested the sauce Alfred was making to go with their dinner of Chicken Parmesan, Eggplant Parmesan for Damian.
After that, Dick took her up the stairs to his childhood bedroom. Most of the posters he'd hung on the walls as a child were gone, leaving most of the walls bare, minus a poster of the Flying Grayson's from Dick's circus days. The walls were painted a dark blue, with a bed situated in the middle of the farthest wall. The room was big, easily bigger than her kitchen and living room combined, but the space still had knick-knacks lining the shelves, and she had a sneaking suspicion that Dick had chosen the faded blue plaid bedspread himself, possibly as a child.
"I'm pretty sure this room is bigger than my apartment," Regan teased, turning to face Dick once she had properly inspected the room.
"Yeah, that's the beauty of growing up in a manor," Dick said. "Big rooms."
Regan chuckled and casually draped her arms around his neck. His hands came to rest on her hips.
"So, that wasn't so bad," he said. "they all seemed to like you, anyways."
"Yeah," Regan said. "When you said Damian could be stiff, that wasn't quite what I thought you meant."
"Yeah, sorry about him," Dick apologized. "He lived with his mom and grandfather for the first ten years of his life, they were big on not really showing emotions. He's gotten better in the three years since he came to live with Bruce, but he still has his… moments."
Regan shrugged. "I'm a new person, and not only that, he could very well see me as a threat who's going to take his older brother away, I can't blame him for not liking me immediately."
"He did call you adequate," Dick reminded her.
Regan laughed. "That's right, he did," she said. Regan smiled, then. "God, I love you, Dick Grayson."
He smiled, too. "I love you, too, Regan Knight." Leaning down, he kissed her softly, one of his hands coming up to cup her cheek. Just as their kiss began to go deeper, though, a bell rang through the manor, causing the couple to break apart. Dick chuckled. "Dinner's ready," he said softly, resting his forehead against hers.
"You guys use a bell to announce meals?" Regan asked, surprised.
"Yeah," Dick responded. "You get used to it after a while."
"Let's not keep your family waiting, then," Regan responded.
One corner of Dick's lips went up, and he ducked down to place one more, soft kiss on her lips.
…
Dinner was delicious, which Regan fully expected due to Dick constantly bragging about Alfred's cooking. Everyone enjoyed the cookies she'd brought, to her relief, and the evening after dinner was spent talking and getting to know each other. Around nine, the couple left, so Dick could bring his girlfriend and her dog back to her apartment.
Before they left, though, Regan stepped out onto the porch to wait for Dick while he said goodbye to his family. While she was out there, her phone rang. And she had no idea that Jason was listening in.
"Hey mom," he heard his brother's girlfriend say. "Yeah, we're just about to head out from Wayne Manor."
A pause, and then, "Yeah, I think it went well," she said. "I hope they liked me, anyways. I mean, they all seemed awesome."
A sigh. "I really like him, mom. He's just so sweet and loving, and he listens to me rant about things that I know he doesn't care about, and he always texts me good morning and good night, and he always does all these small things that I love."
Another pause. "Yeah. I love him, mom, a lot. I could easily spend the rest of my life with him in my dingy old apartment and be the happiest woman alive."
Jason smiled; oh yeah, this girl was way too good for his brother, but she loved him, and if the looks he'd seen his brother giving her all night was any indicator, he loved her. And that was good enough for Jason.
…
Gotham City always seemed its darkest at night, but Dick easily traversed the streets until they arrived at her building and he parked near the entrance.
"This weekend has been long," Regan said, unlocking the door so she and Dick could get inside, right before it started raining.
"It has been," Dick agreed. "How's your grandma?"
"She's alright, surgery went well," Regan said, "Mom and dad are gonna watch over her for the next few weeks, and then she should be fine."
"That's good," Dick said. They stepped into the elevator, Gracie sitting at their feet. "Maybe next time you go to Metropolis, I don't know, I could go with you."
"I did tell my mom that I was dating a pretty awesome guy," she said. "I'm pretty sure she'd love to meet you."
"And your dad?" Dick asked, placing a hand on her hip.
Regan thought about it for a moment, placing her own hands up onto his chest. "My dad's definitely going to pretend that he doesn't like you, but he most likely actually will."
"So, fake that I'm afraid of your dad, but then secretly get along with him?" Dick asked, just as the elevator arrived to the sixth floor.
"Exactly," Regan said. She kissed him briefly and then left him in the elevator to head for her apartment door.
Dick was dazed for a moment, only to realize just as the doors were closing on him what had happened. "Hey, wait!" shoving his arm between the doors, he managed to make them re-open and hurried after his girlfriend. She was just opening her door and allowing Gracie to run in ahead of her. "Wait a second, your dad's actually going to pretend like he doesn't like me?"
Regan laughed, walking into her apartment with Dick following. "I'm an only child, Dick, the only daughter," she reminded him. "My dad tends to be a little protective, but once he gets to know you, he'll love you."
"As long as you love me, I think I'll be okay," Dick said with a grin.
Regan grinned, dropping her bag onto the couch before walking back over to him, still standing in the doorway. Grabbing the front of his shirt, she yanked him forward and wrapped her arms around his neck. "I do love you," she said. "Quite a bit. So why don't you shut the door and show me how much you love me?"
Dick, getting her inuendo pretty instantly, turned to shut the apartment door, making sure to lock it as well. When he turned back around, though, she'd disappeared down the hall to her bedroom.
"Hey!" Dick laughed, heading down the hall to meet her. "Ha-ha, very funny."
Going into his girlfriend's bedroom, his eyes widened when he realized she'd already gotten partially undressed. Her shirt was on the ground, and she was in the process of shimmying out of her jeans.
"I thought it was pretty funny," Regan said, "You gonna join me, or what?"
Dick grinned, shed his jacket, and then unbuttoned his shirt. Once Regan's jeans were on the ground, she got comfy on her bed, waiting for Dick with an amused look on her face.
"You know, I could have done this myself by now," she teased as Dick struggled to unbuckle his belt.
"I mean, I wouldn't be opposed to watching you get yourself off," Dick said. He finally got his belt undone, and his jeans unbuttoned, unzipped, and slipped down his legs. Now that he was only in his boxers, he practically jumped forwards, climbing onto Regan's bed and attaching his lips to hers as quickly as he could.
She laughed through his kiss, her hands going to his hair.
"Someone's eager," she laughed.
"Well, can you blame me?" Dick asked, removing his lips from hers to trail down her neck, instead. "I hadn't seen you since Thursday! Is it so wrong to want to ravish my girlfriend after not seeing her for a while?"
"Not wrong at all," Regan said, bringing his face back up to hers so she could kiss him again. "I missed you, too."
"Yeah, I could only use my hand the entire time!" Dick exclaimed. Regan laughed and kissed him again.
Their sex that night was full of laughter. It was playful and loving, and unrushed. Even though both had work the next morning, neither one wanted it to end too soon. But when it did, they curled up together under the covers, neither one bothering to put clothes back on even after Regan went to the bathroom. Dick's arms were comforting around her, strong and warm.
Yeah, Regan could easily see herself loving this man for the rest of her life.
…
Nightwing went on patrol the next night, meeting up this time with Red Robin and Batman. He was sure not to be late when it came to Batman, reaching their meeting place at around the same time as he did.
"Hey, Bats, RR," he said, flipping over to them.
"Nightwing," Batman greeted. It was the most Nightwing expected to get out of him. Red Robin, however, grinned at his oldest brother.
"Hey, Wing," the boy in red said. "Tell your girlfriend her cookies are amazing."
"Will do, Baby Bird," Nightwing answered. "Ready for patrol, tonight? Thought you had an essay to write."
"I finished it!" Red Robin exclaimed. "And besides, even if I hadn't, we all know that I would have been able to wing it and still get an A."
"That's true," Nightwing nodded.
"Boys," Batman drawled. "We have patrol to do."
Nightwing and Red Robin shared a look, turned back to their adoptive father, and nodded.
Scarecrow had recently broken out of Arkham, as had the Joker. They'd gotten the Joker back in a few days after the breakout, but Scarecrow had been laying low. Until tonight.
"Okay, what do we got?" Nightwing asked, hoping for news on the supervillain.
"It seems he's been testing his fear toxin in the lower levels of an abandoned building," Red Robin said. "I haven't been able to get a blood sample from anyone yet, though, so no antidote."
"Okay, break in, get Crane, don't get sprayed," Nightwing said, "Seems easy enough."
Except, it wasn't. Red Hood and Robin would be meeting them there, as well as Batgirl, one of Tim's friends, but even with five of them trying to take Crane down, it all quickly went to hell.
