In a far-off wondrous land, there exists a town known as Castleton, a wondrous community that is linked to various Disney-themed worlds. Among the residents are the Agents of Castleton, a select group of people who are tasked by the sorcerer Yen Sid himself to combat threats against the various worlds. Among the agents is a man who goes by the codename Ranger.
One day, when some of his colleagues are researching magic portals, Ranger is accidentally sucked through a portal that sends him to the Boiling Isles. Once there, he bumps into some of the local authorities, who were been pursuing Eda Clawthorne. Upon recognizing Ranger as a human, they decide to take him to Emperor Belos, who is interested in the Human Realm that is parallel to the Demon Realm.
After being presented to Emperor Belos, Ranger explains that while he is the specific Human Realm that the ruler fixated with, he has actually arrived from Castleton. However, Belos is still piqued by what he can do. Even though Ranger is not inherently magical, he can still make use of magical items. Ranger also has combat training and is knowledgeable in synthesizing items from working with Moogles. As such, Emperor Belos is willing to let him stay among his coven in exchange for his services. Knowing that he is in no position to make demands, Ranger accepts the offer. During his stay, Ranger is placed in the custody of Lilith Clawthorne. While she is initially distant, Ranger gradually gets her to open up to him.
As Ranger works for the Emperor's Coven, he quickly learns about the dynamics of the Demon Realm and the personal histories of Lilith and multiple residents of the Boiling Isles. Being Lilith's colleague, he becomes personally familiar with Amity Blight, who gravitates towards his supportive treatment of her.
Inevitably, Ranger learns about Luz Noceda, the only other human in the area and the student of Eda. Despite technically being on opposing sides, Ranger and Luz are able to avoid being hostile with each other. In fact, as with Amity, he becomes increasingly invested in the child as time goes on.
During his stay, Ranger figures out that Belos is not the benevolent ruler that he is presented as. But due to his unfavorable position, Ranger chooses to keep his head low and bide his time until he can regain contact with Castleton. Making things more complicated, Ranger also pieces together that Lilith cursed Eda when they were children and that the former is trying to atone for her misdeed by bringing the latter to Belos so that she can be cured. Yet, despite his discovery, Ranger cannot bring himself to hate Lilith. In fact, Ranger even takes it upon himself to try and act as a go-between for the Clawthorne sisters in an effort to help them. Unfortunately, Ranger's plans go awry when Lilith succeeds in bringing Eda to Belos, who in turn reveals that he never intended to cure Eda and instead plans to effectively execute her through petrification. After Ranger narrowly stops a fight between Luz and Lilith, they all band together to save Eda from Belos. After the rescue operation succeeds, Ranger and Lilith become the newest residents of the Owl House.
