Carlisle

Carlisle would experience the term "The Calm Before the Storm" firsthand. The sun had already risen, his shift would start soon and he should be getting ready, and yet he found it impossible move. Presumably it was the 60 kg heavy shapeshifter who had lost her cushion around midnight and was now lying on him. Not that he minded.

On the contrary.

Carlisle closed his eyes and breathed in with relish. Her scent, mixed with the warmth of her skin and the close contact, were engaging and he wouldn't mind spending a few more hours or days or a lifetime like this.

Her steady heartbeat was mesmerizing and Carlisle let his thoughts rest. At least until the annoying ringing of the alarm. Unhappily, he glanced at the hated device and noticed how Leah was slowly waking up. Apparently she was still half asleep because she pressed her face into the crook of his neck and took a deep breath. Normally Carlisle was a bit sensitive to his neck, so scarves could never be missing from his outfits. He felt safe when he could hide it, probably something to do with the sickle-shaped scar that he wore on his neck for over 300 years. Even with Esme it was a sensitive subject and so she had avoided the area.

But he didn't even flinch. The alarm stopped and Carlisle watched Leah slowly fall asleep again. Her heartbeat slowed and she let out a satisfied sigh. He let his mind drift away again when the alarm rang again. This time he felt a hand reaching for the alarm clock in an uncoordinated manner. When Leah saw the time, she was wide awake.

He could hear her heartbeat swelling like a river during the flood and was shocked at how fast she was moving across the room. She uttered a few curses and ran out of the room. He heard her burst into Seth's room and tried to wake her brother up.

Finally, he got up and reached again at the place where Leah had been lying before. Unlike his side, hers was still warm from her body and Carlisle was tempted to lie down again when he heard curses again. He followed the angry voice and heard Leah picking out a suit for Seth, who complained that he was hungry. He immediately recognized the chance to make himself useful and disappeared into the kitchen, although Esme had always taken care of the human guests, well, mostly Bella, but he could also try.

The thought of Esme still hurt, but he could not dwell on the pain as the siblings were already storming into the kitchen. Seth hopped on one leg and tried to maneuver the other straight into the pant leg of the suit.

Leah, on the other hand, was still wearing her pajamas and stuffing various folders and sheets of paper into Seth's backpack. Eventually they both stormed out and he stopped the car door opening and going. For a moment there was silence.

"Carlisle!?"

Leah's voice was questioning, as if she was wondering why he wasn't here too. Immediately he threw himself into the passenger seat where he immediately turned around and helped Seth with his tie. The boy had managed to tie so many knots that he needed the entire trip to school to untie them and make a proper one. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Leah lean back and look at Seth intensely.

"You can do it."

Seth just nodded, looking a lot less confident than the tone in Leah's voice. Finally he got out and straightened his shirt again. Carlisle looked at Leah and was speechless for a moment. Her hair was wild and her pajamas looked out of place and yet he was caught up in the sight of her. Worried she looked after her brother and if Carlisle's gaze had not been caught on her full red lips, he would not have been so startled when she suddenly raised her voice.

"It's already the second attempt. If he can't do it now, then ..."

The sentence was left hanging in the air and Carlisle understood the hidden message in it. Now he was also worried and felt sorry for the young wolf. Finally his hand found hers and he enjoyed the warmth that flowed through him. She let out a sigh.

But before he could lose himself again, he realized that it wasn't just Seth who was late.

He closed his eyes regretfully. The thought of parting with her now seemed absurd and yet he knew that he couldn't just stay at home. He had a shift to cover and it would not be fair to the others if he just didn't come.

"My shift already started."

The look in her eyes made the thought of just staying with her all the more tempting, but finally she nodded.

"Should I drive you?"

He thought for a moment. They would then be together longer, and at the same time it would raise many questions. Questions he didn't even dare to ask himself.

He smiled at her and was pleased to hear her pulse increase.

"No thank you, I'll just run."

She directed her gaze back to the street and he couldn't help but let his gaze wander. He wondered if her skin was just as soft and velvety as it looked and immediately had to tear his eyes from her thighs. Definitely not the right thought for starting a 12 hour shift.

It took half an hour for a nurse to notice that his wedding ring was missing. When he answered her question as to whether he had lost it with a simple "no", it didn't take another for the entire station to know about it.

Apparently the wedding ring had been some kind of protective shield and if Carlisle had known that, he would certainly have left it on his finger. Because now he was sitting in his office and staring at four mugs of tea and two mugs of coffee. All of them already cold, of course. Carlisle sighed. He tried to be nice and polite and felt sorry for his colleagues and nurses, but it was slowly getting on his nerves.

When there was a knock on his door and he could already smell the smell of coffee and aggressive sweet perfume through the door.

"Dr. Cullen I thought- oh. Apparently I wasn't the first to think about it."

Embarrassed, a young nurse stared at him and was standing in the middle of his office with two mugs in hand. He undoubtedly knew the second mug was supposed to be a invitation to stay and engage him in conversation. And so he thanked her again and pointed to a pile of files. At least she got the hint immediately and carefully put the mug down next to the others.

The perfume was stronger around her, and Carlisle inevitably held his breath. When she disappeared from the office, he immediately tore open the window and let out his breath noisily. Just as he was about to sit down again, there was another knock on the door.

Now he was actually annoyed and he stormed to the door. When he opened it, the nurse's fist was still floating. She looked at him in surprise and he was relieved when he saw no mug or cake in her hand.

But his relief did not last when he saw who was behind her.

"Mrs. Clearwater wanted to see you, Dr. Cullen."

He eyed the older woman and immediately saw the resemblance to Leah. The only thing that stood out immediately were her eyes. They did not wear the noble blue around the pupil like Leahs but were rather light brown, like from Seth.

He closed the door behind her and suddenly realized how nervous he was. A feeling he didn't think vampires could feel.

"So you are the famous Dr. Cullen."
