By the time he reached his teens Dee had already figured out that while he found girls very interesting, he was also attracted to boys. It worried him at first, but after a long talk with Mother, he came to understand being that way wasn't uncommon; there was nothing wrong with him, it was perfectly fine to feel the way he did. That was a huge weight off his mind.

From then on, he embraced his bisexuality, dating whoever he liked, girl or guy, enjoying their company for a few weeks or months before moving on to the next. He was too young to think seriously about settling down, and besides, there were too many gorgeous people out there for him to even consider restricting himself to only one. It wouldn't be fair to deny so many of them the pleasures he could offer.

Looking back, he'd been a bit full of himself, not unusual for a hormone-driven teenage boy who was still learning about relationships. Most boys, and many girls, played the field at that age. It was a rite of passage.

After he graduated from the police academy and settled into the life of a cop, he started thinking about the future, settling down, having someone special to come home to after a hard day at work, but finding the right someone wasn't as easy as he'd assumed it would be. There were still plenty of gorgeous people around, but by now many of them were already seeing someone, and the ones that were still single weren't a good fit for him.

That didn't keep him from dating, but his relationships always seemed to fizzle out after a few weeks. Not everyone could handle dating a cop, and even those who were unfazed by his irregular work hours never seemed to work out, so he went back to playing the field, focused on his career, became one of the youngest NYPD officers ever to make detective…

His new commanding officer wasn't so impressed with him, thought him lazy, impulsive, too cavalier with the rules and regulations, but Dee didn't care. He got the job done; what more did the Chief want?

When his partner retired, Dee worked alone for a while, until a new detective was assigned to the squad and paired with Dee to learn the ropes. That was the day everything changed for him. He was still the same person, but he had a new purpose in life, and it wasn't merely to teach the new child.

Ryo was unlike anyone Dee had ever met before. Deceptively gentle and mild-mannered, he was far tougher and more capable than he appeared. He was also a very attractive man, with the most amazing eyes Dee had ever gazed into, so extraordinarily dark that Dee could only assume he had some Asian blood in him. He was soon proved right.

Being partnered with Ryo Maclean was a rare stroke of good fortune. In Ryo's eyes, Dee saw his future.
