After finishing my registration process (and getting praise from other adventurers, which I once again, not comfortable with) I decide fill my stomach before continuing on my day. I took a seat, which coincidentally the same seat I sat earlier.
A waitress come to take my order. Since I didn't know what the usual food here, I took a safe option and order some bread with apple jam and a glass of water.
As I was eating, someone patted me on my back. "Hey Mr Berserker!"
I almost choke on my bread and then I recognize the voice. I turn around and I see silver hair.
"Kriph?!" I said, with my mouth full. Chris just laugh and take a seat in front of me.
"Hey never talk with your mouth full. Watch you manners." She said in a teasing tone. I swallow my bread and take a gulp of my drink.
"Never do that again please. I almost choked!" I said, looking seriously into her eyes. Unfortunately for me, she just laugh it off. "Alright alright I'm not doing it again. Anyway, congratulations on becoming a Berserker!" she said.
I smile at her. "Well it's all thanks to you. I promise I'll gain some money to pay you back. By the way, why everyone keep congratulating me? Anything special about me?" I ask. The way everyone keep congratulating me didn't seems normal. Chris staring at me like I just said the dumbest thing possible. (And maybe it is.)
"You're joking right?"
I shake my head.
"Dude! Your stats literally broke the card! Not only that, the Berserker job is an advance class, that you rarely see one in a beginner town like Axel!" she explained. So that's why everyone have been praising me around. Can't say I like it though. I prefer keeping a low profile, effective as a surprise element when facing enemy.
"I see… Anyway Chris, I've some questions I want to ask you. Two exactly." I said. "What is it?" she said, while twirling her dagger.
"Do you know where the adventurer gear shop at?" I asked, remembering the old man's offer earlier. "Of course I know. Want me to show you the way?" I nodded, gladly accept her offer. I called the waitress and pay for my food before we exited the guild and head to the shop.
"Oh Fajar, you said you've two questions. What's the other one?" Chris as while we're walking through the market.
"Oh yeah! By any chance, did you know anyone by the name Aqua?" I asked. And for some reason, Chris looked awkward when I mentioned the name. "Y-Yeah. I heard that name. She's a rookie who have amazing stats that she can become a arch-priest. She's in a party with a guy named Kazuma." She said, weirdly enough, try to avoid eye contact with me while scratching her scar. Strange, but I just let it off, for now.
"Okay….. So Chris? What should I do next? I could really use some tips from a senior adventurer." I ask, trying to move the topic of the conversation while planning what to do next.
Chris thought for a second before answering. "Well…. You're still new and you've no experience of doing quest. How about finding a party?" she suggests.
"Finding a party?" I wonder how I'll cooperate with others. Back in my world, I usually work alone, only work in groups if the project I'm doing require me to do so. I just prefer doing things on my own so I get the result I really want. But here, I think working in party is the best course of action.
"Yeah! Usually rookies teamed up together to do quest. You can find recruitment posters at the guild bulletin board… And we're here!" she said as she stopped.
I look at the building in front us. It looked like a normal store, with several gear like armor and swords being displayed at the display glass. I looked at the sign, Millard Gear Store.
"Well, I hope you find what you're looking for. I've to leave now. See ya!" Chris said as she's leaving, waving at me.
"Oh alright! Bye and thank once again Chris!" I said, waving my hand.
I enter the store and the door chime alert the owner of my arrival. "Welcome!" From the back, the old man walk into the counter. He looked at me and a smile formed on his face.
"Oh look who's here! Took you long enough boy!" the old man said. "Nice to see you too sir. Oh, I never get to introduce myself. My name is Fajar." I said, bowing my head.
"Well Fajar. Welcome to my gear shop! You can call me Mr Millard. I assume you're an adventurer now?" he ask curiously. I nod my head in response. "Yes indeed sir. Thank again for helping me."
"Oh there's nothing to thank me! I just telling you the direction that's all. Now, how about we start getting you a new gear? Look around and pick anything you like! It's on the house!" Mr Millard said as he start showing me around his shop.
"W-What?! For real?" I am beyond surprised. I thought he'll just offering me a discount or something, not a full blown sponsor. "Yes my boy. For real. Like I said, anything to repay your kindness. And don't be shy to ask anything. Now look around, I'll be at the back if you need anything." Mr Millard walk back to the back of the store, maybe checking on supplies or making some gears.
I look around the store, looking for any gear that I like.
I was planning on getting an armor which can withstand high damage from the enemy, but considering my speed and agility, wearing a heavy full set armor maybe not the best choice.
I keep looking and looking and looking until I found it. A set of gear that really take my interest.
A dark red long sleeved shirt with a black short sleeve long coat over it. Together with the set, a dark grey pants and dark brown leather boots. I admire the set for a while before I hear Mr Millard's foot step, returning from the back of the store.
"See something you like?" he ask.
"I think. What can you tell me about this set?" I ask, while pointing at the set I'm interested in. "Oh this one? This set is custom ordered by a mage. Unfortunately, he can't afford to pay it because he get caught up in a lot of debts. I display it here hoping someone would be interested in buying it." He explained.
I looked at the set closely. "Well… I like it. But unfortunately I don't think it's suitable for my class." I said, kinda disappointed though.
"Then let's make it suitable." Mr Millard said suddenly. "Huh? You could do that?" I asked him curiously. How exactly he's going to make this set that were made for a mage fit for a tank?
"Boy, I've been on business for nearly fifty year! There's nothing I can do! Now, tell me what kind of job do you have? Fighter? Archer? Maybe a priest?" he said, clearly seems pumped up for a task.
"Well… it's a Berserker." I said, scratching my neck.
Mr Millard stopped in track as I said that. Well, I understand. I'm sure there's no way he can turn that into-
"A Berserker?! Oh boy do you know how long it have been since the last time a Berserker steps into my shop? Thirty years! I'm not letting someone like you leave my shop without the finest gear you can get! You wait here and I'll get your set done! Hiarghhh!!!"
Mr Millard sudden uproar causing me to sweat dropped. He took the whole set into the back of the store and start working on it. I don't know what he did exactly, but I can sure that he's really passionate on working on the gear.
*KO*NO*SU*BA*
"DONE!"
After an hour and a half, Mr Millard return from the back of the store and place the gear set on the counter.
I inspect the gear closely, and it is indeed the same set I saw earlier, but with some adjustments. The dark red undershirt, instead of just a plain long sleeved shirt, now have a metal chest plate with metallic red lining. The long coat now have metal shoulder plate with matching red lining as the chest plate. I can also feel there's some extra padding on the elbow of the shirt and knee of the pant.
I'm beyond amazed by the craftsmanship. Mr Millard looked satisfied, proud painted on his face. "Sir this is perfect! Thank you sir! You're truly the greatest!" I praised him, considering what he has done truly deserve a lot of credits.
"This is nothing my boy! I'm happy to provide the fittest armor for a Berserker! Huh, it have been thirty years wasn't." the last part is whispered by Mr Millard, but by ears can still catch it. He looked kinda sad and I can't help but wondered what he meant by that. Before I could ask, he suddenly speaks up.
"Thirty years ago, my son was also a Berserker. When he come to my shop to tell me, I'm so happy that I create the finest armor using the strongest metal for him. He's so happy, he can't stop bragging about it at the guild. Then he went for an adventure and I didn't hear from him for months until… A news about Demon King army attack. His party join the fight. They underestimate the enemy and then, he hold the enemy back while his party retreats. His party barely make it, but him… oh s-sorry for telling you that. I think I talk too much today hahahahah"
I didn't need to hear the rest of the stories to know what happened. I can see the hurt of losing a son in his eyes although he try to masked it with the laughter.
"Sir." He look up and I say with a determined voice.
"I'm sure right now your son's soul is resting among the heroes, a brave soul with heroic heart. He must be happy to know his father is providing the best for me. I'll be proud to where this armor, carrying your finest craftsmanship and your son bravery spirit." I said, holding his shoulder.
A single tear drop from his eyes, he wiped it away and smile at me. "Thank you my boy. That means a lot to me. Now! How about you start getting changed into your new gear!" he took my arm and dragged me to the changing room. He hands me the full set gear and I enter the room and start getting changed.
I walk out the room and look my self at the big mirror provided. The shirt, long coat and pant all of it fits nicely. My boots also feels comfortable on my feet. The additional armors are also nice, giving me great protection while not limiting my movements.
"Oh boy look at you! Now you look like a real adventurer!" Mr Millard said while clapping his hand. I just sheepishly smile at his compliment.
"Thank you sir. I really hope I can repay you for this." I said.
"No need my boy. You've done a lot for me. Just go out and become a great adventurer!" he said, putting my old clothes inside a bag.
"Are you sure you didn't want any weapon?" he hand me the bag. I just remembered that I never actually try out my ability. Maybe I should try it out after this.
"No sir. This would be enough. Thank you for anything." I answered as I walk to the door.
"Oh no problem boy. Feel free to come if you need anything!" Mr Millard wave me farewell, which I return happily while I exited his store.
I walk through the town as I trying to find my way back to the guild. I really should pay attention when Chris shows me the way earlier.
"(whistle) Nice outfit." Suddenly a voice call out. I look around, searching for the owner of the voice, but I see no one.
"BOO!"
"ARGHH!!"
I'm surprised when someone spook me from behind, I lost my balance and fell on my hip.
"Ouchh… that's hurt like shit." As soon as I said that, a laughter erupted. I look up and see the one who's laughing.
And speaking of the devil, it's Chris.
"Hahahahaha! You should see the look on you face! Hahahahaha!" she keep laughing even after I gave her an unamused look.
Finally as she stop laughing, she offer me a hand, which I accept. She help me get up and I patted my pants to get rid of the dirt and dust.
"Ugghhhh… You seriously need to stop doing that. One day you could give me a heart attack." I said. She just give me an innocent grin.
"Okay okay. I will try stop doing that. Anyway, that's a pretty nice outfit. A little off than what a Berserker usually wear, but still nice. Need a guide back to the guild?" I didn't even get to answer that before she already lead the way.
"Thank you and yes, I'll appreciate that." I said as I follows her.
