Chapter 1
Raindrops sliding down her slender face, Naruto grips her beautiful Katana tightly. She falls back into her Tatsumaki stance, her feet sliding in the mud as Madara stands in front of her, leaning on his staff. He is a breath away from dying once more. Blood oozes from his stomach, one eye half-lidded as he smirks sadistically at Naruto.
"All of your little friends are dead, what difference does it make if you kill me now." His smirk grows larger as he laughs. Naruto grits her teeth against the pain in her chest, readying her blade.
"I will fix it all, even if it costs me the last drop of blood in my body, I will fix this, you fucking bastard." With that, Naruto dashes forward, her long crimson hair fluttering behind her like a crimson wave as she beheads Madara. She watches his body slump to the ground, before falling to her knees in exhaustion. She tips her head back up to the sky, tears and rain mixing on her face as she finally starts to mourn.
I couldn't save them.
Kit it's not your-
I couldn't save them. Not a single person. Not Sasuke, not Kakashi, not Sakura, not Ten-Ten, not Neji, not Ino, not-
Kit!
Naruto shakes her head, before closing her eyes and delving into the familiar surroundings of her seal.
Large, watery violet eyes look upon the giant fox. "Kurama..."
Kurama shakes his head, sympathy in his eyes as he glances down at the only container to ever call him a friend.
"Kit, you can still save them all. Aren't you forgetting that seal you found in your mother's scrolls?" Naruto scrubs at her whispered cheek, tears still falling down her face. She nods, poking her fingers together in thought, a habit she combined from Shikamaru and Hinata.
Naruto smiles sadly as she recalls her journey to the Uzumaki temple at the beginning of the war. What she had found, had at first startled her. The masks had been creepy, but it had been the rusty chest, with the kanji for 'Seal' branded on it in the same style she had seen in some of her mothers scrolls the hokage had left her.
The seal that could possibly destroy or break time...
"If I can just link the two level-ten matrixes together, I might be able to pull it off. We would have to make sure we get sent to another dimension, one better than this world. One without Dead bodies, ash and rain mixing together…" As painful memories of her lost precious people come to the front of her mind again, Naruto's body slumps forward, grief overcoming her once more. Kurama closes his eyes as he gently pulls Naruto into his body with a tail, the young girl taking the kind gesture to openly weep into his fur.
After a few hours of having fallen asleep on her only friend left, Naruto wakes up to a cloudy sky. The battlefield is silent as Naruto stiffly sits up, the back of her shirt and hair now full of dried mud and gore. She wipes at her eyes, determination filling them as takes out a tri-pronged kunai. She forms the seals slowly, reaching out for the marker she had left on the Hokage monument. She feels the wind whip at her face, her hair flying about around her as her body is dragged through space. The next time she blinks, she is standing on top of her fathers head.
A sniffle escapes her as she stares at the ruined village, broken and battered by the mars of war. The burn marks on buildings and the rotten smell of death fills her sensitive nose as she gazes over the village she had sworn to defend to her dying breath. Sitting down, she takes a deep breath in as memories of her early days with team seven flood her mind and she pulls a pen and ink out from her pouch. Slowly, she recalls all the happy and sad moments she had in the village. Having ramen with Kakashi and Iruka, laughing with TenTen and Hinata, making fun of Kiba's half-hearted attempts to flirt with her, which she quietly found endearing. Of the times she had spent studying with Sakura and Sasuke in her apartment, going over various techniques and making new ones. Of all the times Sasuke hid her from rabid fanboys after she saved the village from the Pein attack in his apartment, where she had always found sympathy.
Her fingers fly through the preparations as she recalls all of these memories, eyes burning with unshed tears. Finally ready, she bites down hard on the inner side of her wrist. Blood splurts from her wound as she starts to swipe across the ground. After ten minutes of setting up the level ten seal, Naruto proceeds to sit down in the middle of the large design, crossing her legs as she begins to gather her chakra. Proceeding to fly through final handseals in motion with Kurama, they both end on Boar, slamming their hands on the ground.
"Seal!" Having shouted these words together, Both Naruto and Kurama are blinded by a brilliant blue light. Naruto feels her body start to get pulled into the ground, she starts to flail her arms and claw at the mud, her nails becoming caked with it. The air starts to leave her lungs, her chest becoming tight as her vision starts to swim. Eventually, her sight turns black as she loses consciousness.
Wake up, you lazy woman! Just because your admirers aren't here to chase after you doesn't mean you get to sleep! Now wake up before we become a stain on the ground!
Naruto's eyes flutter open quickly, seeing an expanse of blue sky enveloping her. Panic sets in as the wind tears at her body as she finds herself in a free fall.
Wait, the sky? Shit, shit shit shit I am fucking falling! Naruto flails her arms as she flips over, her body rapidly descending as trees and the earth become more visible.
Closing her eyes, she channels her chakra into the wind, slowing her descent just as she dips below the tree line. Her body slams through trees and branches, crashing into the ground with a large Boom.
Naruto groans in the rubble of her landing, feeling that her shoulders and hips had cracked on impact.
Kurama?
Already on it, kit.
Naruto nods gratefully to her friend, standing wobbly and with a great deal of pain. She winces as Kurama gets to mending her hips, sending her sprawling back to the ground. She pulls herself to lay under the shade of the tree, combing her long red hair back as the cool breeze gently rolls over her. Taking a deep breath, Naruto ignores the throbbing in her skull and expands her chakra into her senses, trying to get an idea of where she just fell and almost died.
About an hour or so from Konoha. Naruto smiles at the feeling of peace in nature surrounding her. After the toads had abandoned humanity in the war, Naruto ended up signing the fox contract, as well as becoming a fox sage along the way. While the toads were much older than the foxes, the foxes were much closer to nature than the toads had ever been.
Being a fox sage allows Naruto to feel everything going on around her much more in-depth, not to mention allowing Nature to settle in her separate from her chakra. Standing once more, her body shakes from the various injuries plaguing her. Naruto begins to make her way towards Konoha, determination shining in her eyes.
Kit, you won't make it to Konoha in your condition. Even with me healing you, you'll probably fall unconscious sooner than later. Don't be stubborn.
Kurama, in the entire time we have been friends, when have I ever not been stubborn about something? Kurama scoffs from within the seal, rolling his eyes even as he smiles at the chipper redhead.
Don't come complaining to me if you fall short, then.
Izumo and Kotetsu were having a relatively normal day. Nobody but a few merchants had entered the village, having come a little early for the yearly merchant festival. The birds had been chirping in the trees as the sun beat down on them relentlessly, sending the pair hiding in the check-in station.
Izumo let out a drawn out yawn. "You know, Ko, we really should put in for promotion one of these days. Or maybe take a different mission than gate duty?"
Kotetsu glares at Izumo, waving his hand in his face as he tries to get some wind on him. "Why? I'm perfectly content protecting Konoha here at the gate. Besides, it beats doing what Iruka does. Could you imagine either of us-"
Izumo stands up suddenly, peering down the road. Kotetsu startles in response, jumping out of his seat to mimic his partner.
Kotetsu follows his partner's gaze down the road, noticing the small red bob of hair stagger towards the gates in the distance. Eventually, the rest of the body follows, which sends the pair of Chunin stumbling out of the station.
Blood drips down Naruto's clothes from the open wound on her temple as she finally slows down to a staggering walk down the road, having finally set her eyes on the gates of Konoha. She smiles as she comes within thirty feet of the familiar doors, watching a much younger version of Kotetsu and Izumo come stumbling out of the station. A broken smile crosses her face as she recalls their grotesque bodies, laying on top of one another as they had protected civilians escaping from Madara.
The duo reaches her as she collapses in front of them, blood the color of her hair now covering the rest of her face as the last vision she sees before she blacks out is a frantic Izumo.
"I made it." She whispers as her body finally hits the dirt road, dust floating up from the impact.
Kotetsu and Izumo look at each other frantically, the color of her hair was a slight indicator, but the giant Uzushio symbol in bright red on the middle of her shirt was a dead giveaway to the fact that she is an Uzumaki. They sprint to her as she slumps to the ground unconscious, worry lining their bodies as panic sets in.
"Ko, we need to get her to a hospital right away. Flare your chakra for emergency protocol." Kotetsu did just that, a trio of anbu appearing next to them almost immediately.
A silver-haired anbu steps forward, nodding to the two.
"You two get her to the hospital right away. Cat, Bird keep track of the station until they can return. I'll report to the Hokage." The Chunin nod, Izumo picking the stranger up gingerly and making a mad dash for the hospital, Kotetsu hot on his heels.
Civilians and shinobi alike move to sides of the street as a frantic duo of Chunin come barreling through the streets. The limp redhead in the arms of one of them is the only clue most of them get as the Chunin push themselves to reach the hospital quickly.
With a loud bark of: "Get out of the way! Medical Emergency!" Izumo blasts through the hospital entrance, beelining for the nurse's station. The nurse looks up, startled.
"She just showed up at the gate, her head is bleeding but I don't know if there's anything else wrong." Izumo pants out, holding the strange redhead gingerly in his arms. Some of her blood has gotten onto his vest and had begun to stain it.
The nurse nods grimly at the Chunin, hitting the emergency button. Loud sirens start to blare as several hospital staff come rushing to Izumo, immediately placing the young woman on a gurney and examining her.
"Unconscious, trauma to the head. She's lost a lot of blood, we will need to do a transfusion more than likely. She also has numerous lacerations along her back, shoulders, and legs. There might be internal damage as well." One doctor states as they wheel her into the emergency room, with Izumo watching from the corridor worriedly. Kotetsu laid a hand on his friend's shoulder as the doors swung shut after the stranger.
Hours Later
Hiruzen walks through the dimly lit hallways of the hospital, making his way to the ICU of the hospital. Kakashi trails behind him as his anbu guard, his pipe nowhere to be seen. A frown mars his face, nurses bustling about as his head swarms with thoughts.
Whatever could have caused Shinjikara-Sensei to ask the anbu to summon me here, must mean the new visitor we have is quite special, or dangerous. Hopefully the former.
Reaching the end of the hallway, Hiruzen nods to the two anbu guards, Cat and Boar.
"The Swallow waits for nobody." Hiruzen smiles internally, his anbu proving meticulous even in front of a possible imposter of himself. Though any fool who attempted to impersonate me would risk death by smoking.
"Except its own kin." The guards nod, relief flooding their posture ever so slightly as Boar opens the door for Hiruzen. Entering the room, a young brown-haired medic rushes up to him, bowing for a second before straightening.
"Hokage-Sama, this has never happened before in recorded medical history. I mean, the endless possibilities that could be happening here are just so interesting that-" Hiruzen raises a hand as a soft chuckle escapes his lips.
"Breathe, Shinjikara-Sensei, breathe. What exactly is happening?" Taking a deep breath, the young, yet promising doctor calms himself.
"Our chakra measuring device, the most powerful one we have, fizzled and broke upon trying to measure her chakra. She's been unconscious for several hours now, and beyond noting that she has a remarkable healing factor, we know next to nothing. Hence why you were summoned, Hokage-Sama. Hospital protocol dictates that if a patient can't be fully identified, you are to be notified immediately." Hiruzen nods, having helped write the protocol himself during his first few years as Hokage.
Hiruzen moves closer to the bed, taking in the prone figure with several IVs stuck in her slender arms, for the body in Hiruzen's eyes is most certainly feminine.
The long, sleek red hair is the first thing Hiruzen truly takes notice of, distant images of a young, fiery redhead appearing over the prone figure. That's when bright, violet eyes peer up at him from the bed, sending him reeling.
Naruto awoke to a startled Hiruzen Sarutobi, one much younger than she was used to, standing at her bedside. Smiling weakly, her strength was still gone for the most part. Her smile, what has always proven to be her greatest tool, seemingly helps lowers the old man's guard, his grandfatherly side slowly coming out.
"Hiruzen… Sarutobi?" Her voice cracks as her vocal cords strain, bringing some pain to her throat. She winces, tuning out the mother hen of a fox berating her for almost tearing her body in half and killing herself. A glass of water is at her lips, pouring slowly so she only gets small sips gradually.
With half the glass gone, she gives a grateful smile to the young doctor, who blushes and nods adorably. Glancing back to Hiruzen, she smiles sadly at him, grief and sorrow underlining her features. An expression of pain Hiruzen has seen before, but on someone much younger.
"I would like to speak to her alone if that is quite alright." The room clears at Hiruzen's command, leaving himself and Naruto alone.
Taking a chair, he pulls it up to the side of the bed as Naruto shifts beneath the sheets.
"I will admit, I was wary at first. Someone capable of breaking our most powerful chakra measurement machine would certainly be dangerous, yet that's obviously not the case." His eyes shift downwards at Naruto, a sad smile joining his features. "Something terrible must have happened to dim your smile, Naru-Chan."
Naruto stiffens, tears welling in her eyes at the softness in his voice. No matter what, Jiji had always been her role model and caretaker, even if he couldn't be there the entire time.
"...How did you know?" Naruto's question prompts a soft chuckle, his eyes somber.
"I would never mistake the smile of my favorite grandchild, even if you aren't mine by blood." He tells her.
With those unexpectedly kind words, the last vestige of iron will leaves Naruto as tears run from her eyes. She had promised herself she wouldn't cry again yet, losing everyone had taken its toll.
Losing Sasuke and Sakura, my brother and sister. Neji and Ten-Ten, Bushy Brows and Choji. Everyone…
Hiruzen places a gentle hand on her head, brushing her hair back so it's out of her face. She brings a hand up to wipe her tears, before sitting up in the bed. Pain wracks her body, yet she tries not to show it as she sits up fully.
"It's good to see you again, Jiji." Alive didn't need to be said, yet Hiruzen read it clear as day on her pale face.
Hiruzen withholds a grimace, before steeling himself.
"What happened?" Naruto sighs, a couple more tears falling before she begins.
"War." She states. "A war that put the last three to shame and brought the entire world to its knees. A war that was so devastating and bloody and cruel that there was no chance of recovery. A war where all of the villages banded together, fighting side by side in an effort to maintain some form of peace. A war that was so gruesome, it even left the summoning realm so low that there were no more warriors. A war, Jiji, that took everything this world had to offer and made sure it would never go back to being normal. Never. Again. It was a war, Jiji, that forced me to learn how to seal the ten tails and its jinchurriki all in one go. This war forced me to cut down over thousands of enemies while covering my retreating friends. This war, that was so full of blood and gore, forced me to surpass my father in speed trying to save him and everyone else." Her voice breaks on the last sentence, but she recomposed herself to tell him of howending with how she leapt through time and space on a prayer to stop it all from happening in the first place.
By the end of it, Hiruzen was left gaping at the twenty-year-old, who had gone through possibly the worst pits of hell, and survived.
The will of a Kage. Hiruzen can see the strong will beneath the surface, the fierce resolve to protect her people at any cost, even if it meant going back in time to a world she wasn't familiar with, to give them another chance.
"Only one good thing really came out of it, Jiji. I got to befriend Kurama! Who you know as the Kyuubi." Hiruzen nods dumbly at the last comment, before smiling at the steely resolve hiding behind her violet eyes.
"The will of fire burns strong in you, Naruto-Chan. I can see it. You've grown up to become a magnificent young woman." Naruto nods, her will strengthening at the fact that she really had done it. She traveled back in time.
Four days had gone by since Naruto had arrived in the new world. Her release from the hospital had been merely twenty minutes ago, not yet cleared for training. That required one more day of rest, the young doctor insisted.
Nobody knew who she was, besides Hiruzen. The name they had come up with for her, Kuri Uzumaki, had made her very happy. Chestnut's had been a rare commodity in her life, yet she had always adored them.
"What do you plan to do now that you are here, Kuri?" Hiruzen almost giggles like a child at the name, a smile on his face as both he and, the now Kuri, sit in his office as the morning rays of the sun trickle in through the window.
"Honestly? I'm not sure. Kurama and I weren't even sure this would work." Hiruzen nods, having slightly expected as much. "Though, I want to protect everyone. That includes you, Jiji." Hiruzen smiles at the fierce determination in the young women's faces, giving him hope for the future.
